Still having issues with downloads. I have been aborting the stuck downloads, but is it possible to hard code the IP address for the good download server on my Windows 10 machine?
If you know how to configure a hosts file, yes. But it's probably not worth it. The two IP addresses are swapped every 5 minutes to balance the load - just wait a few, then retry the download. It may not work first time, but it will do eventually.

I think the people who are having problems may be those who hard-coded the other server last time, and forgot / didn't bother to undo it afterwards - manual settings can be more trouble than they're worth.

Tried the <http_debug> option, but I have no idea what it means...

I see

HTTP/1.1 502 Server Hangup

Description: The server requested closed the connection before the transaction was completed.
I've not seen that one before, either. I think it means that the server was feeling stressed and felt like having a break.

I haven't been paying attention, and I normally have <http_debug> switched off - it justs bloats the log files. so I only turn it on when I need to debug things.

The last 36 hours have been the first time I've looked at it since August 2017. And the hosts which drew my attention were the hosts which I had - lazily - left locked to download from vader only, after whatever the last problem was. So, vader has been running without fault since August (else I would have noticed, as I did yesterday).

According to Wikipedia, and numerous other sources, 502 is normally defined as

502 Bad Gateway
The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server.
I've seen that often enough from projects like Einstein, which makes extensive use of gateway servers to shield the actual data storage servers.

According to JohnDK's log, his machine connected to georgem, and sent off the opening gambit as normal: but then got back both the '502 Server Hangup', and the following plain-text HTML (badly written), obviously designed to be viewed in a browser. I don't think the SETI servers do that, but I know that my router does send me pretty pictures to tell me what's gone wrong locally. So, maybe the reply didn't come from a Berkeley server, but from somewhere much closer to home?

I tried my VPN software earlier today (with the default location to US) but that didn't work. After seeing your post, I tried Mexico, that worked for the 5 I had stuck. Turned off the VPN software, and another 15 got stuck. Turned the VPN software back on to Mexico, and those 15 downloaded with no issues. Kinda strange.

Linux hosts could get data.
Windows hosts couldn't get data.
Windows hosts using a Linux proxy could get data.

I remember that, maybe something related to the size of the package who forced us to use proxies to DL the WU.
But that was fixed at the time? Maybe somebody delete the wrong lines....

It was related to congestion on busy internet links - read the RFC I linked in that earlier post. Soon afterwards, the project got permission to use the Campus gigabit link up the hill. The problem went away, because the congestion went away. Maybe the newer larger WU datafiles are clogging it up again, especially when we're recovering from an outage?

At that time we use the TCP Optimizer program to change the values on the Windows hosts to works as they where Linux and that helps a lot at that time at least. I'm old but I clearly remember they found the problem and fixed on the server side. Was about 5 Years ago.

It was a networking problem, not a server problem. They fixed the network. Since then, they've moved the servers down the hill into the data centre, so they have the benefit of proper modern infrastructure.

Yes, Linux has it enabled by default. That's why the proxy trick worked.

Yes, Linux has it enabled by default. That's why the proxy trick worked.

Then why i have the same problem and need to babysitting on the retry bottom?
