Message 1906676 - Posted: 12 Dec 2017, 12:31:24 UTC - in response to Message 1906588.

Al, at least the new server should be named in honor of you, Richard and Mr K. I propose the name ARK.
I'm good for that, but all things considered, and thinking on it for a little while now knowing everything he's done, I'd like to propose modifying it slightly, in his honor. Instead of ARK, how about RAK? Because we certainly use that term (well, at least a variation on it) here at the project, and I'd feel better knowing that Richard is leading the parade. Thoughts everyone?
Thanks for the kind words, Al, and for the thought, but I'd like to decline. It took all four of us, and the leader should be Eric - he put the team together.

I like the original idea of ARK. At some time in the future, the human race is going to need one of those - in four billion years, if not before.

I like to think that traditional astronomy is drawing the map and starting to write the destination guides: our job is getting to know the neighbours, so we don't repeat the colonial errors of our forefathers.

I'd like to do this again sometime, but with the emphasis on staffing for a change. So I'm trying to think up an acronym that could include Eric, but the only one I can come up with is 'freak' - which might describe me, but isn't fair on the rest of you. Perhaps we could recruit a couple more for STREAK?

I wouldn`t describe you as a freak Richard.
Just consistent.
I also like the idea of ARK.
Not to forget Thank you to each and everyone who made this possible.

If I hadn't taken the hit, it would have read as if I was calling Eric the freak - and we certainly know that isn't true!

Ok Richard, ARK it is then. It too has a significance about it, a little more existential ring to it.

They are coming and going Lynn due to a rogue piece of script that nobody has time yet to fix.

The seti website being as slow as treacle to access, is more important at present.

Must be fixed there back. :)

. . For me also, it evokes the possibility of the hypothetical hibernation ships or generation ships that may take us to the stars someday. Seems appropriate considering the search.

And then after doing a little more clicking around the interwebs, I came across this: First Titan V benchmarks show how it compares to a GTX 1080 Ti

Seeing how you can never seem to have enough horsepower, would this be a worthy upgrade? Def not cheap, though, but if it is more appropriate for the use that this system is going receive...?

I believe Eric already stated the Titan V would not be suitable because it doesn't have enough memory. And the development system for the brand new Tensor core sub-system is still in infancy and may not be suitable for a production environment yet.
Just putting around the interwebs again, and I ran into another interesting piece of hardware when I was comparing HMB2 to GDDR6 SDRAM. The Tesla V100 for PCIe.

It is listed under the Data Center section of their website, but at least it has 16 gig of RAM!

. . Hmmm, so what are the odds our crunching apps would run on one of those? :)

Well, we know the Titan V will run the apps, can't remember if it was SoG or cuda but the times were awesome. Unfortunately, that person took his computer over to bitcoin mining.

Well, at the price of that card, I suppose I can't hold that against him... ;-)

Hopefully once he's recouped much of it's costs he'll toss it back on here and we'll see how it does, and probably by then there'll have been a couple revs of drivers to help get things dialed in a little better.

I give $75 on 12/21/17. Still no drive icon. Was there a time limit for this?

Sorry Mike but this should be adhered to.

The special icons and so on go on until 31st December, but let's see if we can crack this before Christmas.
