If your tree looks like it was decorated by Martha Stewart, this thread is not for you. If your family sits around a perfectly roasted goose on Christmas day, dressed to the nines and not arguing about politics, this thread is not for you. If you start shopping for Christmas presents in January and have everything you need purchased by May, this thread is not for you. This thread is for the rest of us who, five days into this dreadful month, are already over-whelmed. It is a place to laugh, a place to whimper, a place to complain, a place to vent and even a place to post a picture of your Charlie Brown tree. If Scientists Wrote Christmas Carols |

For some it is really dreadful indeed, due to CA brushfires and winds, but then, some have lost their homes, 150 in one fire alone, Gov Brown declared a state of emergency. Merry Xmas, today has been a tiring day for Me... The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Christmas, complicated? It just happens. Do you really think is matters if everything comes out of a can and is put into a microwave? Does it matter if the price tags are still attached? Tree, 12 inch plastic, do you really need to dust it off from the last decade? ;-) |

If you start shopping for Christmas presents in January and have everything you need purchased by May I do, but I've forgotten where I put it all by July... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Still in progress of buying stuff. Think I have struck bone scratching my head thinking about what to get for whom. Scarier still making the money stretch until a full payday in January. |

I got my first Christmas card today from my sister. It contained 2 $20 notes which I passed on to my young sons Vincent and Thomas |

From what I remember of living in Scotland - which barely recognised Christmas at the time - the accepted gifts when 'first footing' at Hogmanay (New Year's Night) were a lump of coal (for good luck) and a tot of whisky (because it's bloody cold up there, at midnight). |

I stopped the Christmas craziness 25 years ago. I do not do anything special during the Christmas season. Hardly possible with kids and grand children. On the other hand i love the blinking eyes when my grand children opening the gifts :) With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

That is it, exactly, I think. There are moments of the Christmas season that are simply wonderful, and there are moments that are less so. It's complicated. |

My favorite thing to do this month is bake lots and lots of cookies. When I assemble cookie platters, I try to have a mix of very sweet vs not-so-sweet cookies. I tried a new recipe yesterday for tahini cookies which, despite having 1.5 cups of sugar, still do not taste overly sweet because tahini is a very savory ingredient. Here is the recipe, in case you want to try something new: 2.5 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 0.5 tsp. baking soda 0.5 tsp. table salt 12 Tbsps. unsalted butter 0.75 cups granulated sugar 0.75 cups packed light brown sugar 1 cup tahini 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract additional sesame seeds Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Cream butter with sugars, 3 mins, scraping bowl as needed. Beat in tahini, eggs & vanilla Stir in dry ingredients Roll cookies into small balls, place on parchment lined baking sheets and flatten very slightly with the bottom of a sugared glass. Put a pinch of sesame seeds on each cookie and bake at 375 degrees for 12-14 minutes, depending on the size cookies you have made. Let rest on cookie sheet a few minutes, before removing to a rack to cool. This recipe makes 32 medium sized cookies. I doubled the recipe and made the cookies small, so I ended up with about 150 tiny cookies. If you make the cookies smaller, be careful not to over-bake them. They should be pale colored and only a bit brown around the edges, to achieve a crisp outside with a chewy interior. Enjoy! |

In case anyone wondered what Tahini is: Tahini, also known as Ardeh, is a condiment made from toasted ground hulled sesame seeds. Tahini is served as a dip on its own or as a major component of hummus, baba ghanoush, and halva. Tahini is used in the cuisines of the eastern Mediterranean region, from the Balkans, Caucasus and Middle East to Northern Africa. It is also widely used in Chinese and South East Asian cuisine, notably Vietnamese cuisine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahini The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I'm thinking one should prepare for Christmas like one prepares for Thorsday. I hear the Frothy Top over at Beta has some special cider that could be of use. ;-) |
