Everytime I run Boinc my temps on my gpu jump dramatically to over 170 degrees. I have looked everywhere to find out how to keep it from using my gpu and damaging my video card. This overheat only happens with Boinc and not even when playing Battlefield 4. It has 3 fans to cool it all of which are working fine and keep the temps below 150 degrees under almost all gaming conditions. My cpu temps are all ok and they are running all 8 cores at 100%. If I can't fix the gpu temp problem I will have to stop using Boinc all together. So if anyone can help disabling it from using the gpu period, please help.

In your BOINC data directory there may (or may not) be a file called cc_config.xml

<ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev>

should stop BOINC from using your Radeon.

Why give advice like that? It's a project preference to use the CPU or Intel/ATI/Nvidia GPU, so that can be set via Your Account (click your name in the top right corner of these pages), Preferences for this project, Edit preferences, uncheck Use ATI GPU, save preferences.

However, 170F (76C) isn't too hot. That's what my Sapphire RX 470 - 8 GB runs while gaming (e.g. Rise of the Tomb Raider, Ghost Recon Wildlands, 7 Days to Die) and while doing Seti calculations. It could go cooler, but I have Sapphire Trixx throttling the GPU fans. These temperatures are reached without ever maxing out the fans. Running Speedfan to tell the rest of the (case-) fans to do a little more work, but not max out either, helps with getting in cooler air and getting the hot air out. Of course, water cooling the CPU helps here as well as there's no big CPU fan throwing heat into the case.

But in any case, 170F isn't too hot for a GPU. 95C (203F) is apparently acceptable when playing The Witcher 3 with a stock cooler. So running 20C under that is really fine!

I found the setting in account that allowed me to turn off the gpu that you were talking about. I unchecked all of the gpu manufacturers and now it is running at a nice cool 135. Thanks for the advise and a short video from a member in my own group I have solved my issue and can continue to support the research.
