We're having some as yet unexplained slowness with the our BOINC database. There don't seem to be any hardware issues. Temperatures are running normal and all the drives seem good. Yet for some reason the query that fills the "ready to send" queue is running about 10 times slower than it normally does.

Until I get it fixed, it means that on average we're sending out 3 workunits a second rather than 30+.

I'll let you know when I've got it figured out.

Thank you, Eric.
I know you put a lot of effort into it when things are not running as they should be.
Very much appreciated!

Eric - Thanks for the update. I don't know if this makes any difference in your troubleshooting, but I haven't gotten an CPU tasks for several hours, in fact I'm down to 17 from 100.

Cliff that is likely because the server normally fills the fastest component first. That would be your 750Ti's.
I have a similar thing happening here, since there are not many Arecibo vlars about, the CPU doesn't get much.

Eric is talking about the response of the BOINC database, which is all in one location, on one computer...
even if SETI was having a slow ISP responce, (they aren't!) the symptoms displayed would be different.

I've set all my fast machines to what I call "pester" mode... (every time the machine updates, [which it does every time it finishes and uploads a WU...] it requests new tasks...)

I bumped the memory allocated to the database by 20% and transferred some common queries to the replica. Things things seem to have stabilized.

I was having similar symptoms, a few days ago. I fixed it by taking a damp Q-tip to the vanes of my CPU heat sink. CPU temperature dropped by 30C. One of these days someone will invent a self cleaning heat sink. (Reversible fan maybe?)

If only ... some bright engineer type decided to make the vanes come out like spokes on a wheel. Easy to clean the ends, impossible to get into the center. Also guess where the dust collects. In the tight spaces. Thankfully some other engineer invented canned air. I wonder how rocket scientists deal with this issue in zero g?

Hi there Eric, keep up the great work maintaining the system, especially on these long weekends.

I just wonder if the file deletion slowness might point you in a direction of problem area to look at. I have noticed over the past 5-7 weeks the deletion process gets backlogged as well as can be seen in the haveland graphs affecting both AP and MB task clean up.

Who knows, it could be something like an ailing network adaptor on a computer ...

Big can of pressurized air pointed in the reverse direction to the fan(s) on your radiator/heat sink (depending on whether you have liquid or air cooling...) always works for me... (every 6 months or so, my computers are in a dusty environment!)

Of course, then my dust allergy kicks in... :-(

Sometimes such a thing are called gremlins.

Sorry, but I think I catch the point here.

A bit of slowness being noticeable in the web-page, but now it is gone.

I try to get the dust in a "dustbuster" type, but it doesn't work too well... My radiators have a fan on both sides (one pushing, one pulling...) so the vacuum hose solution doesn't really work...
