I have decided to install ubuntu 16.04 and give BOINC a try for my newest system. Biggest challenge is that I have not used UNIX since I had a SPARC5 on my desk decades ago, so I need some serious help. First, the package on the BOINC download page for Linux seems kinda old. Is that the latest and best option? Second, Linux seems a bit different from the UNIX/Solaris exposure I had before, so I am having trouble even getting the package installed and working. Is there a updated guide on installing it? I have tried instructions posted here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to work.

I was trying by the command line. I found this set of instructions http://www.overclock.net/t/1449225/guide-installing-boinc-on-ubuntu-from-the-terminal which seemed to work better, but I can get to advanced view and I am not sure which version got installed.

Why not just using Mint 18.2.
Its based on Ubuntu 16.04. and much easier to use.

and the GUI in mint is so easy to use. thirty minutes from a bare PC with no o/s to a working cruncher with a pair of GPUs.

Mike, Rob, I heard the AMD drivers work best with Ubuntu 16.04. Is it confirmed that they work with Mint just as well? I plan to run my 3 ProDuos which have been very problematic to get to work on all systems I tried.

I have made some progress in Ubuntu. I figured out the command line and have successfully installed and uninstalled the package. I have also gotten the GUI to work and have used it to install. Not sure if it is running properly, since there doesn't appear to be an option to select advanced view. There are no drop down menus at the top of the window. Is there a config file anywhere where I can set this as the default?

I have things working now. Could not see anything in Simple view and could access any pull down menus. I finally looked at the interface on Windows and found Ctrl-Shift-A changes the view. Tried on Ubuntu and was able to get to Advanced view. Now it all looks normal. Next things to figure out:
1) Loading GPU drivers
2) Loading Optimized apps - Is r3584SoG available for Linux?

The menu is hidden in the title bar. You have to hover your mouse over the title bar to make it appear. If it still doesn't, you need to open Settings>Appearance, click on the Behavior tab, then make sure that "in the window's title bar" is selected.

Basically, the BOINC for Linux is a mess. Yes, the Simple view apparently doesn't work for most people. The version of BOINC for Ubuntu I have built actually works very nicely in Ubuntu 16.04. To use it all you do is expand it to the Home folder, open the BOINC folder, and double click on boincmgr. Not only does Simple View work, the Advanced View doesn't have the problem of the Tasks page auto-scrolling to the bottom. To use it you need to remove any traces of any other BOINC you have, it's best with a Clean System Install. You can download it here, http://www.arkayn.us/forum/index.php?topic=197.msg4519#msg4519
I was going to post the Updated version 7.8.3 later today, but, it really doesn't matter if you start with 7.8.2 as it's just a matter of pasting the updated files into the BOINC folder to update it.

There hasn't been any official BOINC development for Linux since the old package on the BOINC website. And that version is broken mostly. TBar seems to be the most prolific Linux BOINC developer now and he hangs out on the Linux CUDA 'Special' App finally available, featuring Low CPU use thread.

He has posted new versions of BOINC over at Crunchers Anonymous. I'd either get the 7.4.44 build or the 7.8.2 build.

The 7.4.44 package also contains the CUDA special app which you have no use for since you are only AMD but you can just ignore that app and get the stock apps. The 7.8.2 build is just BOINC.

You heard wrong.
If you look at the top ten computers where do AMD GPUs feature? A long way off the mark. It is so simple to set up the nvidia drivers compared to the AMD ones, two or three mouse clicks and its done and running and stable, no need for constant tweeking once the initial tubing was done months ago - and one of those has sat in the top three for some time.

Hi Mike, I got 17.30 drivers installed with no issue for my Hawaii card, but I am trying to get everything in order before I even try the triple ProDuo. I hope to give it a try tomorrow. I got TBar's 7.8.3 BOINC Manager installed and working great. Is there an optimized CPU MB app for linux? CPU tasks are definitely taking a long time with stock apps.

This is definitely going to be a learning curve. I just dumped all of my tasks by not changing the mode of the executable. Next problem is that there was no app_info.xml file, so I just copied over the one provided with the AVX app. So there is no GPU app defined. Is there an easy way to configure it so that it uses stock GPU apps and the optimized CPU app?

Maybe a better approach would be to snag the current Stock GPU app from the project directory if I can get my system running stock GPU apps again. Then I can rename it and make the appropriate app_info.xml file.
