Sakurajima volcano erupts
The volcano erupted, with plumes rising to 5,000 meters above the summit crater for the first time since 2020. There were no immediate reports of injuries and damage to buildings, the prefectural government said, while the Kagoshima Meteorological Office maintained the volcanic activity alert level at three, urging people not to approach the volcano. The Japan Meteorological Agency forecast volcanic ashes to fall in parts of Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.

The explosive eruption occurred at the Minamidake crater around 6:33 p.m. Rocks flew for a distance of 1,000 to 1,300 meters but no pyroclastic flows were generated, according to the local weather office.

It's blowing its top yet again.

Thousands evacuated amid tsunami threat as Indonesian volcano erupts again.

Indonesian rescuers are racing to evacuate up to 12,000 people after a volcano erupted again, forcing an airport to close and prompting authorities to warn of the potential of a tsunami.

Indonesia's Ruang volcano spewed lava again on Tuesday, less than two weeks since it first erupted.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) had warned the residents of Tagulandang island that a tsunami could be triggered by volcanic material collapsing into the ocean.

The warning, issued on Tuesday morning local time, remained in placed as of the afternoon.

The agency raised the alert status of Ruang to the highest level following the early morning eruption, urging residents not to go near the volcano.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said that all 843 residents living in Ruang island, where the volcano is located, have been moved to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province.

Residents of Tagulandang island are being relocated to Siau island to the north.....

Indonesia's Mount Ibu volcano erupts twice, spewing red-hot lava.

Indonesia's Mount Ibu volcano has erupted twice in the same day, firing bright red lava and rocks into the night sky and triggering a spectacular display of volcanic lightning.

The 1,325 metre volcano on the eastern island of Halmahera erupted twice on Thursday, said Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, an official at the country's volcanology agency PVMBG.

The first eruption was at 1:30am local time, spewing incandescent lava and rocks as lightning flashes lit up its crater, PVMBG footage showed.

The second eruption was at 7:46am for two minutes, shooting volcanic ash as high as 1,200m.

Clouds of grey ash billowed into the sky from the crater, images from PVMBG showed.....

New study of the Cascadia subduction zone, published in Science Advances magazine. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adl3198

If this study is correct then it's not good news for the Northern part, off Vancouver Island, with a possible catastrophic 9.0-magnitude earthquake, leading to 40ft tsunami waves.

I have friends in the area. They all know that if the Cascadia ruptures that they are likely toast. But no one believes it will happen in their lifetime.

It's this side's turn again.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake followed by a 7.1 tremor have struck off Japan, triggering tsunami fears.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake followed by a 7.1 tremor struck off southern Japan on Thursday afternoon.

The local meteorological agency warned of tsunamis striking coastal areas.

Broadcaster NHK reported that tsunamis of up to one metre were expected to hit or have hit some coastal areas in Kyushu and Shikoku islands.

“Tsunamis will strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said on X.

There were no immediate reports of any damage; however, vision emerging on social media shows buildings violently shaking as locals and tourists dive for cover......

White Island goes off again, but at least there were on tourists on it this time.

A new eruption has taken place at an infamous volcano off the coast of New Zealand five years after 22 people died.

A minor eruption has taken place at New Zealand’s White Island volcano where 22 people died five years ago.

New Zealand’s geological monitoring service Geonet confirmed the eruption on occurred on Friday afternoon, raising the Volcanic Alert Level to 3.

Geoff Kilgour, duty volcanologist, said satellite data indicated the plume from Whakaari/White Island contained a minor amount of volcanic ash.

He said most of the activity was concentrated between 1-3pm and the ash was being dispersed east-northeast of the island, towards the northern end of East Cape.

“Whakaari is currently experiencing a period of elevated unrest and short-lived steam and ash emissions could continue for some time,” Mr Kilgour said.

“There is a low probability of this ash affecting the mainland.”.....

Meanwhile further north a warning is issued.

Japan's earthquake scientists have warned residents of an eventual 'megaquake'. Here's what that means.

Japanese scientists say the country should prepare for a possible "megaquake" that could kill hundreds of thousands of people—although they stress the warning does not mean a colossal tremor is imminent.

The Japan Meteorological Association (JMA) warning is the first issued under new rules drawn up after a 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster killed around 18,500 people.

The JMA's "megaquake advisory" warns that "if a major earthquake were to occur in the future, strong shaking and large tsunamis would be generated".

"The likelihood of a new major earthquake is higher than normal, but this is not an indication that a major earthquake will definitely occur during a specific period of time," it added.

The advisory concerns the Nankai Trough "subduction zone" between two tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean, where massive earthquakes have hit in the past.......

A deadly volcano eruption that spewed “ash and fireballs” has killed 10 people on the Indonesian island of Flores.

A volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted overnight, killing at least 10 people as it spewed fireballs and ash on surrounding villages, officials said Monday as they raised the alert to its highest level.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a 1,703-metre twin volcano located on the popular tourist island of Flores, erupted shortly before midnight, forcing authorities to evacuate several villages.

Residents described their horror when the crater started shooting flaming rocks at their homes......

Magnitude-7.0 earthquake strikes northern California as tsunami warning issued.

A magnitude-7.0 earthquake has been reported in northern California and authorities have issued a tsunami warning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter of the quake struck in Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County near the Oregon border, and was at a depth of 10 kilometres, USGS said.

The US National Tsunami Center issued the tsunami warning for areas in California.

The earthquake's magnitude was originally reported as 6.6 but was revised to a 7.0.

It looks like there is a new ash cloud over the Philippines
Kanlaon erupted this morning.
The ring is moving. Besides the Northern California 7.0 last week there have been several quakes in Alaska, including a 6.3.

Surf's up?

Tsunami threat after magnitude-7.4 earthquake recorded at Vanuatu.

Authorities say tsunami waves have been observed after a magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck Vanuatu.

The quake struck 37km from the capital, Port Vila at 12:53pm AEDT.

It struck at a depth of 10km, the United States Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves had been observed, and predicted waves of up to 1 metre along some parts of Vanuatu's coastline.

Tsunami waves of less than 30 centimetres above the tidal level were predicted for Pacific island nations including Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was no tsunami threat to Australia.

Authorities are monitoring for any sign of a tsunami.

Dan McGarry, a local journalist in Port Vila, said it was a "violent, high-frequency shake" that lasted for about 30 seconds.

He said there were sirens being heard around the capital.

Witnesses have reported major landslides near the capital.
More to come.

The Tsunami warning was canceled. Good thing too. We are having king tides in northern CA. Some parking lots in the San Francisco area are 2 feet underwater. If a Tsunami hit at a king high tide, there could be serious problems.

More shaking going on.

Japan issued a tsunami advisory after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck.

Japan was hit by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake on Monday causing two small tsunamis to form.

The quake was at a depth of 23 miles and mainly hit the southwestern Kyushu region, said the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The quake struck at 9.19 pm local time, according to the agency.

Tsunami warnings were issued shortly after for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the temblor was centred, in the southwestern island of Kyushu.

A warning was also issued for the nearby Kochi Prefecture.

Masamasa Sato, chief of the crisis management department of Takanabe Town Hall in Miyazaki Prefecture, said: “The shaking was so strong that it was difficult to stand for about 20 to 30 seconds.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of possible tsunami waves of up to one metre (three feet) and urged the public to stay away from coastal waters.

“Tsunami can strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or go near coastal areas,” the JMA said on X.

Two small tsunamis of around 20 centimetres were detected at two ports in the region, the weather agency said.......
