While over on the other side.

Magnitude 6.8 earthquake shakes Ecuador, at least 14 deaths reported.

A strong earthquake has shaken southern Ecuador and northern Peru, killing at least 14 people, trapping others under rubble and littering streets with debris and fallen power lines.

The US Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.8 that was centred just off the Pacific coast, about 80 kilometres south of Guayaquil, Ecuador's second-largest city.

One of the victims died in Peru, while 13 others died in Ecuador, where authorities also reported that at least 126 people were injured....

Sadly a bit more shaking going on just to the north of here. :-(

Papua New Guinea East Sepik province hit by 7.1 magnitude earthquake, three dead.

At least three people have been killed after a magnitude-7.1 earthquake hit Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province.

The quake hit the remote Chambri Lake, south-west of Wewak, at a depth of 60 kilometres, just after 4am on Monday.

A spokesman for Papua New Guinea's Natural Disaster Centre said one person had died in Wewak, while two people had died in Angoram district.

A local councillor in Angoram district, Darren Mai, said the two dead were family members.

"One of the houses fell on [my family member] and her baby boy … they died instantly," he said.

According to early reports from villages in the area, people required medical attention and dozens of houses collapsed.

NGO Samaritan Aviation has been landing seaplanes on the Sepik River, where people have been taken to be flown for medical attention.....

Strong earthquake hits central Japan, killing one and leaving 20 with injuries.

A strong, shallow offshore earthquake has hit central Japan killing at least one person and injuring more than 20 others and disrupting plans for holiday makers.

The magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck Ishikawa prefecture on the west coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the US Geological Survey said.

In Japan, its meteorological agency originally measured the quake at magnitude-6.5 and said it was centred at a depth of about 12 kilometres.

More than 50 aftershocks strong enough to be felt have been recorded since, including one at magnitude-5.8 on Friday night, local time.

Most injuries and damages were reported in Suzu city, at the northern tip of Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture....

Now to the islands off to the NE of here.

‘Cabinets were flung open’: Pacific island nations rocked by massive earthquake.

Cabinets were flung open during a major earthquake that rocked the Pacific island nation of Tonga – some as far away as Samoa also being able to feel the tremors.

The 7.5 magnitude quake struck 73km northwest of Hihifo island about 5am Thursday, according to Geoscience Australia.

Aggie Pula-Letuligasenoa lives in the nearby Pacific island United States territory of American Samoa, and also felt the tremor....

Hidden Volcano Abyss: Behind Tonga's Massive Eruption.
I found this on YouTube and it's only 5 days old, it seems there is a twin to the monster volcano that erupted in 2022 called Tofua, it erupts once every 400 years and it has been 400yrs.
I couldn't find the ring of fire thread, so I thought this is very important and fascinating as Spock would say.

Australia’s Lord Howe Island issued tsunami warning after undersea earthquake.

A tsunami watch has been issued for Australia after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck in New Caledonia.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Friday afternoon warned of a potential threat to people on Lord Howe Island following the undersea earthquake at 12.57pm eastern time near the Southeast of the Loyalty Islands.

In an update shortly after 2pm, the BoM said an eight centimetre tsunami wave had been observed in New Caledonia.

A potential tsunami could begin affecting Lord Howe Island after 4.15pm, BoM said.

An alert from the agency at 1.10pm stated the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre was closely monitoring the situation and would “advise immediately if there is cause for concern”.

There is no threat posed to Australia’s mainland, while islands close to the earthquake have not been identified as at risk.

The government’s Smarttraveller agency made an announcement of its own while informing Australians Tsunami waves could reach one metre in coastal areas of Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, Kiribati and New Zealand.......

Philippines' Mayon Volcano spews lava down its slopes putting thousands on alert.

The Philippines' most active volcano was gently spewing lava down its slopes, alerting tens of thousands of people they may have to quickly flee a violent and life-threatening explosion.

More than 12,600 people have left the mostly poor farming communities within a 6-kilometre radius of Mayon Volcano's crater in mandatory evacuations since volcanic activity increased last week.

But thousands more remain within the permanent danger zone below Mayon, an area long declared off-limits to people but where generations have lived and farmed because they have nowhere else to go.

With the volcano beginning to expel lava Sunday night, local time, the high-risk zone around Mayon may be expanded should the eruption turn violent, Teresito Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said.

Mr Bacolcol said if that happens, people in any expanded danger zone should be prepared to evacuate to emergency shelters.....

Will plans to introduce more water to the Salton Sea, to cut down on toxic dust left over from irrigation runoff, set off the big 1? Experts think that it will, but it's long overdue anyway.

Huge California earthquake to hit 'sooner than later' as San Andreas fault 'ready to snap'.

Cheers.

Back to the north of us.

Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits Mindoro province in Philippines' north, felt in Manila.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 has been recorded in Mindoro province in the northern Philippines, according to Geoscience Australia.

The quake struck at a depth of 126 kilometres at about 10:19am Philippines time, the Australian agency said.

No casualties or major damage were reported after the quake, though Philippines authorities halted operations on three elevated railway lines in the capital, Manila, as a precaution.

Tremors from the quake were felt in the capital, which is about 100 kilometres away, as well as in nearby provinces, witnesses told news agency Reuters.

Ceiling lights were seen shaking at a hotel in one of Manila's business districts where President Ferdinand Marcos Jr was speaking to reporters after attending an international trade forum.

CNN Philippines posted footage on social media of employees at the Philippines House of Representatives being evacuated.

Peter Oliver Palacio, the mayor of Calatagan, a town just five kilometres from the epicentre, told DZMM radio the quake was "dizzying", and added the town's engineering department had been instructed to check for damage to buildings.

The Philippine seismology agency said it expects damage and aftershocks in the aftermath of the quake, which it also pegged at magnitude 6.2 but then revised to 6.3......

Magnitude 7.2 quake hits Alaska, tsunami advisory issued.

A major earthquake has struck near the United States state of Alaska, sparking a tsunami advisory.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 0648 GMT Sunday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The offshore quake was detected at a depth of 32 kilometres off the Alaskan Peninsula, the USGS said.

A tsunami warning was initially issued for South Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and regions of the Pacific near to the earthquake.

The warning has since been downgraded to an advisory, meaning a tsunami with the potential to generate strong currents or waves dangerous to those in or very near the water is imminent, expected, or occurring.....

Shishaldin on Unimak Island, one of the eastern Aleutian Islands, is tossing its toys around just now. The AVO & USGS have issued an aviation warning about ash clouds and the like in the area.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic blast late last year is now making its consequences felt.

A massive volcanic eruption has accelerated a hole in the ozone layer.

The delayed effect of the eruption of Tonga’s underwater Hunga volcano last year has caused an ozone hole over Antarctica to open weeks earlier than usual.

The hole in the ozone layer – the portion of the stratosphere that protects our planet from the Sun’s ultraviolet rays – has been gradually healing over the past few decades thanks to the 1987 Montreal Protocol’s phase-out of ozone-destroying chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Still, this layer thins every September to form an ‘ozone hole’ above the South Pole.

In recent years, the hole has started to open in mid-to-late August, when spring begins in the southern hemisphere.

The increasing sunlight also drives the ozone-destroying activity of the remaining CFCs in the atmosphere. It then closes in November or early December.

This year, the ozone hole has started to open several weeks earlier at the beginning of August. By August 10, it had already grown to over 3 million square kilometres in size.

In comparison, it was still completely closed on the same date in 2021 and 2022.

Chris Lucas at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology attributed this early opening to the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano.

The eruption, considered the most explosive of the 21st century, injected vast amounts of water vapour into the stratosphere.

Above Antarctica, this water vapour has since turned into icy clouds that provide a surface on which CFCs can react with ozone, thereby speeding up its depletion, said Mr Lucas......

Not that it's much of a holiday place these days by all reports, but it was rockin'.

‘Whole villa shaking’: Bali holiday-makers rocked by 7.1 magnitude earthquake.

A second earthquake within 24 hours has been recorded near Indonesia, with the aftershocks being felt as far away as Darwin.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Indonesia near the Banda Sea about 2.30pm AEST on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Australia, despite the earthquake being felt more than 700km away in the Northern Territory....
