Two 7.0 quakes in the Solomon Islands. USGS had reported 7.3 but has downgraded it to 7.0 Tsunami warnings have been called off.

The first quake hit just off the south-west coast at 1pm local time, the US Geological Survey said, triggering a tsunami warning. The second quake, with a magnitude of 6.0, was recorded nearby 30 minutes later. The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service later said there was no tsunami threat, but warned about unusual sea currents on the coast.

While on the other side of the Pacific Pond.

Southern California feels effect of 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Mexican coast.

Nothing up here in Northern California. We have a fire on one of the islands, but no shaking.

It's Hawaii's turn again.

World's biggest active volcano Mauna Loa erupts.

Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, has erupted for the first time in 38 years.

Dramatic US Geological Survey footage captured lava flows spewing at the northwest rim of the Hawaiian volcano.

It comes more than 38 years after the shield volcano last erupted.

The volcano alert level has since been upgraded from “advisory” to a “warning”, The US Sun reported.

Officials have said that the eruption isn’t likely to threaten communities at this stage.

But, they warned: “Based on past events, the early stages of a Mauna Loa eruption can be very dynamic and the location and advance of lava flows can change rapidly...

It's a double bunger now.

Why people in Hawaii are abuzz over 2 simultaneous volcanic eruptions.

The goddess of fire is alive and well on Hawaii's Big Island, where two of the most famous volcanoes in the world are erupting at the same time.

An auspicious and spiritual tone has struck the island as the glow of the lava oozing from Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world, and Kilauea, one of the most active volcanos in the world, ignites the landscape of Hawaii's Big Island, a sign that Pele, the Polynesian goddess of fire, is blessing the land, experts told ABC News....

Hawaii built on a bed of marbles.

These slides rank among the world's largest landslides. This should really not come as a surprise since the islands really are built on a foundation of "watermelons and marbles" (pillow lava and sand) that rises 15,000-20,000 feet above the surrounding seafloor.

Scientists lower alert for Mauna Loa, say eruption could end, but that's based on past eruptive behavior and we all know that Mother Nature can throw curve balls.

Cheers.

6.2 magnitude earthquake recorded in eastern Taiwan.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude on the Richter scale, with epicenter offshore, has shaken eastern Taiwan and awakened citizens after several aftershocks were felt, the island's Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has reported.

The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 3.17 a.m. (local time), was located 29.1 kilometers southeast of the city of Hualien, with a shallow focal depth of 5.7 kilometers.

So far, the Taiwanese authorities have not reported any injuries or material damage, and have also ruled out the risk of tsunami, as reported by 'Taiwan News'.

California had another shake.

5.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Northern California and 'felt more violent' than the previous quake, official says.

An earthquake struck Northern California Sunday morning for the second time in less than a two-week span, according to the US Geological Survey.

The 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurred about 30 miles south of Eureka and was centered about 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell, the USGS said. The earthquake was a shallow one, occurring at a depth of about 17.3 miles, according to preliminary information from the agency.

Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes said the quake shook her house.

“It was crazy. The earthquake felt more violent this time,” Garnes told CNN. “It was shorter, but more violent. My refrigerator moved two feet. Things came out of the refrigerator. There’s a crack in my wall from the violence of it.”...

30min ago a magnitude 7.7 occurred in the Banda Sea, Indonesia.
Felt it here in Darwin around 620km away. Lasted for at least a couple of minutes, and it was pretty damn strong for 10-15 seconds.
Hate to think of the damage that's going to result for those much closer to the epicenter.

I found the 7.1 Ridgecrest quake to be quite enough and my 2006 foundation system was tested in 2019, I can't say how much more it is rated for, but 7.1 is quite a bit, but it's not a 7.7 at least and I thought it was not going to end quickly... If it hadn't places near me might have been shaken to the ground, my place is bolted to concrete and into the soil and to my home, I suffered no damage. Previous quakes here in the Barstow CA area since 2006 were around 5.0 or below.

To the north of here.

Magnitude-5.1 earthquake hits Indonesia, killing at least 4 people in seaside restaurant collapse.

A shallow earthquake has shook Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua, killing four people who were unable to escape when a floating restaurant collapsed into the sea.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude-5.1 earthquake hit residential areas in Jayapura, near Papua's northern coast and was centred at a depth of 22 kilometres.

Shallow quakes often cause more damage on the Earth's surface.

"The residents were really panicked. I was in a car, and I felt like the car's wheels were lifted up," said Tri Asih, a resident of Jayapura, Papua's capital.

Officials said four people who were inside a floating restaurant died when the quake caused it to collapse into the sea on Thursday....

Not only did Tonga's massive volcanic eruption lat year set records it also wiped out unique, never-before-seen life-forms and a new study (under peer review ATM) tells how it may affect Australia's weather for up to eight years.

You have to take the bad with the good I suppose.

Cheers.

And if they didn't have enough on their plate already. :-(

Vanuatu braces for second major cyclone in two days, as northern province hit by earthquake.

Vanuatu's capital is bracing for its second major tropical cyclone in two days, after one part of the country was hit with a magnitude-6.5 earthquake on Friday morning.

The eye of Cyclone Kevin is set to pass the capital Port Vila on Friday night, with wind gusts up to 130 kilometres per hour forecast.

The cyclone will build to a category 4 on Saturday as it passes the capital and travels south-east.

It comes just two days after the country was hit by category 4 Cyclone Judy, causing widespread damage and flooding.

The northern parts of Vanuatu have already felt the full brunt of the cyclone as it builds in severity....
Stay safe and dry over there.

Indonesia’s Merapi volcano spews hot clouds in new eruption.

Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted Saturday with avalanches of searing gas clouds and lava, forcing authorities to halt tourism and mining activities on the slopes of the country’s most active volcano.

Merapi, on the densely populated island of Java, unleashed clouds of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that traveled up to 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) down its slopes. A column of hot clouds rose 100 meters (yards) into the air, said the National Disaster Management Agency’s spokesperson Abdul Muhari.

The eruption throughout the day blocked out the sun and blanketed several villages with falling ash. No casualties have been reported.

It was Merapi’s biggest lava flow since authorities raised the alert level to the second-highest in November 2020, said Hanik Humaida, the head of Yogyakarta’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center.

She said residents living on Merapi’s slopes were advised to stay 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) away from the crater’s mouth and be aware of the danger posed by lava.

Tourism and mining activities were halted....
