Darwinites got an early wake up call this morning.

Magnitude 6.0 earthquake near Banda Sea felt in Darwin.

Residents in Darwin have once again been rocked awake by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake on Wednesday morning.

The earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea about 321km northeast of East Timor.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the tremor was felt in the Northern Territory’s capital city, but there were no tsunami warnings to Australia.

Locals woke to their beds shaking and items being knocked off shelves around 3.47am local time....
Cheers.

It depends on what ground you have under you and/or how far away you are from the epicenter.

I felt the 7.1 Ridgecrest CA earthquake, but that is 69.03 miles from where I live at in Yermo CA according to this site here.

If that whopper had been closer a lot of places here would be on the ground, my home has an earthquake resistant foundation system under it that the county said I needed, best money I ever spent...

Not on the ring of fire, but I thought I would tell you that Mt Etna, Sicily. That's off the toe of Italy. Erupted a short time ago.

Mass evacuation ordered in the Philippines after volcano erupts with 2 mile-high plumes of steam and ash.

Thousands of people were evacuated in The Philippines on Saturday after a volcano erupted with plumes of steam and ash that went nearly two miles in the sky, Reuters reported.

The threat level for Taal volcano, located in a lake south of the capital Manila, was raised from level two to level three on a scale of zero to five on Saturday morning after it spewed plumes that reached up to 9,800 feet, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said in a statement.

A total of 1,100 people, including fisherman in the lake, were evacuated by authorities, PHIVOLCS told Reuters.

PHIVOLCS said in the statement that it strongly advised the residents in five surrounding areas to evacuate "due to the possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami should stronger eruptions subsequently occur."...

Things are getting hot again in Japan.

Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupts, prompting officials to issue highest alert.

The Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, erupted Sunday evening, prompting evacuations in the country's southern island.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency said Sakurajima erupted around 8:05 p.m. local time (7:05 a.m. EDT) on the island of Kyushu, hurling large rocks as far as 1½ miles south and sending up plumes of smoke and ash. Japan's NHK News released a video from the agency capturing the flames from the eruption.

The meteorological agency issued a Level 5 alert, the highest alert possible, to residential areas immediately near the volcano, such as parts of Kagoshima City, to evacuate. The city is home to about 600,000 people.

Evacuees were advised to be cautious of falling volcanic rocks and possible flow of lava, ash and searing gas within 2 miles of the crater.

No injuries, deaths or damage were immediately reported....
