It's very sad to hear of these quakes but also amazing that Australia being so darn close to the ring of fire
that we don't ( Hope never will ) get them "yes we get little ones"...Seems the ring of fire has not settled down
since 2003 still adjusting to the changes still happening.. I'm just amazed that NZ is so quiet atm ( Hope it remains so )

Current reports are 48 dead, hundreds injured, many still to be accounted for.

Most recent update, 384 dead 500+ injured.
Apparently that figure is for Palu alone. With other coastal towns & villages in the area, the overall toll isn't looking good, although the location of Palu most likely resulted in a much larger Tsunami there than will have occurred in other areas.

Some scientists say that quakes are due to a slowing of Earth's rotation on its axis.

Yep Plate Tectonics at work, Australia is still moving north.

This map also shows why this area used to have volcanoes, 3 parts of the Farallon plate on this map used to have a section off of
California which has since been subducted into the Earth's mantle.

500 mph wave? That is a sure sign of an underwater landslide. Additionally most of the damage was on fill. Liquefaction was a big factor.

The news said 20' tall waves, and the tsunami detection network is not online yet. There are 50,000 homeless, one Yellow bridge on one end was knocked off its piers and the other half was crushed and mangled. The death toll is expected to rise into the thousands the news said.

Also the death toll is up to 1200, mass graves are being dug and filled. Not being prepared when one could be is just asking for trouble, the people in and around Palau were not ready, but things take time in a poor country, in a rich country they should not be neglected or there will be hell to pay, as landslides or changes can happen cause of neglect, even here.

To make matters worse, Volcano erupts just northwest of where quake-tsunami tragedy hit in Indonesia.

The eruption of Mount Soputan in North Sulawesi may also impact on relief and evacuation efforts, with authorities warning planes about volcanic ash in the air.

Mount Soputan spewed ash 6000 metres into the sky on Wednesday morning.

The eruption status was raised from an alert to standby four kilometers from the summit and up to 6.5 kilometres to the west-southwest. Standby status means people should avoid the area nearest the volcano and have masks available in the event of ashfall.

Planes were warned of the ash clouds because volcanic ash is hazardous for plane engines.
The death toll there has now exceeded 1300.

Well the death toll has now risen above 2000 and at least 5000 are missing according to latest TV reports. :-(

Apparently the affected districts have a combined population of about 1.4 million, the population of Palu alone was at least 335,000 (2010 census). There are estimates that in excess of 500,000 people are without reliable food, water or shelter.
