To make matters worse, Volcano erupts just northwest of where quake-tsunami tragedy hit in Indonesia.

The eruption of Mount Soputan in North Sulawesi may also impact on relief and evacuation efforts, with authorities warning planes about volcanic ash in the air.

Mount Soputan spewed ash 6000 metres into the sky on Wednesday morning.

The eruption status was raised from an alert to standby four kilometers from the summit and up to 6.5 kilometres to the west-southwest. Standby status means people should avoid the area nearest the volcano and have masks available in the event of ashfall.

Planes were warned of the ash clouds because volcanic ash is hazardous for plane engines.
The death toll there has now exceeded 1300.

Well the death toll has now risen above 2000 and at least 5000 are missing according to latest TV reports. :-(

Apparently the affected districts have a combined population of about 1.4 million, the population of Palu alone was at least 335,000 (2010 census). There are estimates that in excess of 500,000 people are without reliable food, water or shelter.

It's bigger when it's in a populated area.
The hills may be alive with the sound of shaking, but the edelweiss will continue to grow without intervention.
Roads need to be rebuilt or food and fuel will not get in.

The tsunami waves struck at night without any warning, destroying hundreds of buildings.
The tsunami in Indonesia kills at least 168 without warning
Officials say the tsunami could have been caused by undersea landslides after Anak Krakatau volcano erupted.

Etna is erupting but so far without any damage to buildings. Only ash is causing problems to flights from Catania airport.

Some villages by their location were spared cause of the shape of the coastline and the local sea bottom I heard on the tv news earlier, the villages that were wrecked ought to be moved to safer areas.

@ Grant: Any Volcano named Krakatoa is bad news, son or not.

Moving village's should not be a problem.

Moving major cities threatened with major if not total destruction by the Ring of Fire will be impossible.

Rising sea level caused by climate change may require whole cities of people to move or perish, the last time sea level rose was about 10,000yrs ago and then it was 400', some who fled now live in or near the Himalaya's, Antarctica and Greenland are melting, the majority of which in one is above present sea level, if some think this won't affect them cause they're not liberals, they're nuts. Some areas would go from valleys to shallow seas, plowing that will be impossible. This time it's only 200' and the melting is happening faster than expected and is happening NOW.

The effect on the Ring of Fire is unknown of course.

400'? I think you got the range of moment. About 20,000 years ago it was 200 feet lower than today. It then rose to about 200 feet above what it is today. Total change was 400 feet. If all the ice covering Antarctica, Greenland, and in mountain glaciers around the world were to melt, sea level would rise about 230 feet. It's never been 400 feet higher than where it is today. Almost all of the water on Earth is stored in two places: in the oceans (currently 97 percent of all water) and in glaciers (currently about 2.7 percent). We would need a lot more water to raise it 400 feet.
