Villagers forced to flee after volcano erupts in PNG

A volcano on the north coast of Papua New Guinea erupts, sending plumes of ash 15 kilometres into the air and forcing 2,000 villagers to flee from lava flows.

And Lombock has a long way to go recovery wise.

Almost a month after the Indonesian Island of Lombok was rocked by the first in a devastating series of earthquakes, the tourist haven remains a scene of destruction on a grand scale.
The clean-up has been delayed by almost 1,000 aftershocks that have shaken the region, including one magnitude 6.9, almost equivalent to the big quake that destroyed much of the north on August 5.
The ongoing tremors are also causing more death and destruction, with more than 430,000 people now displaced, 74,000 homes damaged or destroyed and 7,000 people injured.

The official death toll is now 515 and still rising.

Things have certainly been active in this region over the last month or so.

Reports of a 5.6 quake near Walpole in WA (Western Australia).
5.3 according to the USGS. Was felt in Perth, 280km away.
Also in Albany 120km away, although only weakly.

Given it's epicentre, depth, and the low population density of the area there shouldn't be much damage, if any.

"Shaky Town" may be in for some serious earthquakes:
A tectonic squeeze may be loading three thrust faults beneath central Los Angeles
LA’s problem: The squeeze

Thrust earthquakes like these, in which the top side of the fault is thrust up and over the bottom side, will likely strike Los Angeles again in the 21st century. They may in fact pose a greater hazard to the city than earthquakes on the nearby San Andreas Fault because they can occur directly beneath the central metropolitan area. This means that a city that has found so much of its identity and place in history from being improvised as it went, and from being a cultural and economic melting pot, now faces the unwieldy task of readying its diverse infrastructure and populace for the strong shaking these kinds of earthquakes can produce.

It's very sad to hear of these quakes but also amazing that Australia being so darn close to the ring of fire
that we don't ( Hope never will ) get them "yes we get little ones"...Seems the ring of fire has not settled down
since 2003 still adjusting to the changes still happening.. I'm just amazed that NZ is so quiet atm ( Hope it remains so )

Most recent update, 384 dead 500+ injured.
Apparently that figure is for Palu alone. With other coastal towns & villages in the area, the overall toll isn't looking good, although the location of Palu most likely resulted in a much larger Tsunami there than will have occurred in other areas.

Some scientists say that quakes are due to a slowing of Earth's rotation on its axis.

500 mph wave? That is a sure sign of an underwater landslide. Additionally most of the damage was on fill. Liquefaction was a big factor.
