Like I said in your request on the BOINC forums, please post the first 30 to 40 lines from the BOINC startup messages from the event log. |

I'm having trouble with this GPU problem as well. Have seen numerous posts about GPUS, CUDA, OpenGl. I've not run BOINC for awhile but have a spare PC available now. Its quite modern with the latest NVidia drivers. I notice the 'service' option is now disabled so I no its not that. I'm completely lost as to why when I run GPU-Z, the CUDA, OpenGL is unticked... Please any help would be great. here's my startup text; 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | cc_config.xml not found - using defaults 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Starting BOINC client version 7.8.2 for windows_x86_64 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Libraries: libcurl/7.47.1 OpenSSL/1.0.2g zlib/1.2.8 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Running under account Jeff 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | No usable GPUs found 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Version change (7.6.33 -> 7.8.2) 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Host name: MusicRoom 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Processor: 4 AuthenticAMD AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor [Family 16 Model 2 Stepping 3] 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 htt pni cx16 popcnt syscall nx lm svm sse4a osvw ibs page1gb rdtscp 3dnowext 3dnow 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Memory: 7.75 GB physical, 15.50 GB virtual 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Disk: 976.46 GB total, 691.87 GB free 10/09/2017 6:44:19 PM | | Local time is UTC +8 hours 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | SETI@home | URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID 8332118; resource share 100 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | SETI@home | General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 09-Sep-2017 14:45:18) 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | SETI@home | Computer location: home 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | SETI@home | General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | Reading preferences override file 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | Preferences: 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | max memory usage when active: 3967.28 MB 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | max memory usage when idle: 7141.10 MB 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | max disk usage: 97.65 GB 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25% 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | (to change preferences, visit a project web site or select Preferences in the Manager) 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | Running CPU benchmarks 10/09/2017 6:44:20 PM | | Suspending computation - CPU benchmarks in progress 10/09/2017 6:44:51 PM | | Benchmark results: 10/09/2017 6:44:51 PM | | Number of CPUs: 4 10/09/2017 6:44:51 PM | | 2373 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 10/09/2017 6:44:51 PM | | 5617 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU |

Its quite modern with the latest NVidia drivers.If these are drivers installed by Windows, these lack the necessary components such as CUDA, OpenGL and OpenCL. If your GPU is CUDA capable it requires drivers from Nvidia. Install those. You may have to uninstall the previous drivers for good measure. |

By default Windows installs its own version of the nVidia drivers which, although having the same version number as the "real" drivers lack the parts required for computation. As Jord says, you have to install those from the nVidia website. You don't have to manually uninstall the drivers you have, just select the "advanced" mode when its offered, then choose a "clean installation" which will do the job for you. There may be a couple of re-boots during this process, and I always do one once the installation has finished "just to make sure". One thing to do before you do this is to turn OFF Windows driver updates from the control panel otherwise Windows may try and undo your hard work. Thanks Ageless and Rob Smith, I've done a clean install using the NVidia package from their website listed as, 385.41-desktop-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe. Two things cross my mind. First is that Windows has sneaked in its own driver without your permission - I've had that in the past when I'd failed to disable Windows Driver updates before doing a user update :-( Second the version of the nVidia driver you've grabbed doesn't have all the bits there, I've one computer that is similar to yours and am using an older driver (version 368.81) quite happily, it might be worth trying that one. One other option could be that the videocard is damaged. Not damaged enough that it won't allow drivers to be installed, but just not be using any of that. To check if the drivers even put anything needed in the correct places, you can check in C:\Windows\system32\ if you have an OpenCL.dll or any nvcu*.dll files. If these aren't there, that's the problem. If they are there, they're not used for some reason. And then I'd be eye-balling the videocard. You can take it out of the machine and try to reseat it. Make sure to detach monitor(s) before you do so! Or check that it has all the (power) connectors still attached. Check also that the power leads don't have breaks and that they're still connected to the power supply unit. You don't have overzealous anti-virus or other anti-malware programs that can stop these drivers? Or a driver checker program that decides for you that the driver you installed isn't good enough? |

Hi again, so I've Uninstalled all drivers using the DDU tool. completely uninstalled any NVidia stuff. (Ethernet/audio) completely uninstalled and stopped antivirus software (AVAST) and removed JAVA just in case. done a brand new install of my older NVidia drivers and new install of BOINC and .... still 'no usable GPUs found' :( |

OK, but did you turn OFF the Windows driver update before trying anything else? (and it is "£$%^&* persistent in trying to turn itself back on again) (btw - DDU DOES NOT work very well with nVidia drivers, use the built in "clean installation" option, as indicated above, it works far better and more reliably) Don't use older drivers you "have in store" - get them clean from the nVida website, just in case Windows has been playing tricks behind your back. Have you done a visual check and re-seat of the card as indicated by Jord? Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

The driver version listed is showing ForceWare 385.41 which is the current version on NVIDIA's website. The latest version on the vendor website is 385.28. This may be one of those rare occassions where, while the NVIDIA driver is preferred and generally should just work, it may not have been validated by the OEM and therefore might have compatibility issues with this card. It may be prudent to completely remove the newer graphics driver entirely and install the older version, either from the vendor website or from NVIDIA's website. Hope that helps. Two follow-up things I noticed: In your first set of logs it says it is running under account named Jeff. In the second set of ogs, it is showing the account is Julie&Jeff. If you're using Fast User Switching (not logging out of the system, but using the "Switch User" feature), or if you're using Microsoft Remote Desktop to access the machine, GPU drivers aren't available in those situations. |

Thanks for your replies, sorry I've been away for work. I should clarify that the User name I manually removed the name 1st time and just forgot 2nd time. I did a completely 'Clean Installation' using the latest drivers. It causes the screen to violently flash on /off until after login screen, then after 20/30 minutes computer freezes, only reset brings it back. I have now done a 'Clean install' using my oldest graphic drivers, 331.65, as I don't know where the drivers are failing.. e.g I don't want to download every single driver pack @ 300mb+. I am somewhat dubious of these packs anyway as they seem to be full of bloatware (3D drivers etc) that I don't use. Rob mentioned that you use version 368.81, I'll try that but I'll ask some stupid questions now; Will updating to Windows 10 fix this? Do I need to install a CUDA or OPENGL developers pack to make this work? Should I buy a 2nd hand graphics card off ebay since this stupid $300 GTX760 seems to be giving me nothing but grief? Should I move to another planet where I can live amongst the stars and not worry about GPU computing? :) Thanks for all your help so far. |

Rob mentioned that you use version 368.81, I'll try that but I'll ask some stupid questions now; Working back through your questions... You need OpenCL NOT OpenGL to do SETI's computations. CUDA is another technology that is used by many of SETI computation applications (but not at the same time) OpenCL and CUDA come as part of the standard nVidia driver package, so the there's no need to install them separately. No, updating to Windows 10 will almost certainly screw it not fix it. And it's me that uses 368.81 - and have it to be a stable driver on GTX907s on a similar rig to yours. There have been (allegorical) reports that the latest drivers are not as stable as some of the older ones. Final comment, just keep an eye on the Windows update application, it has a habit of trying to turn driver updates on. Thanks Rob, I've installed the latest Palit GTX760 drivers, (which comes from Nvidia) and now I'm getting what's described in this thread; https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1023312/geforce-700-600-series/gtx-760-error-from-384-76-or-over/ and still no 'usable GPUs found' I'm at a total loss now, I'll download 368.81 and try as last resort. I just don't know what is stopping CUDA processing from working. sigh.. thanks for your help |
