According to Fox News a couple of hours ago, Equifax Credit Reporting Agency has been hacked.

143 MILLION Americans have had Identity Information STOLEN from their Equifax Records! The Hackers even have Driver's License Numbers from the affected millions!

Go to "https://www.equifax.com/personal/"

Follow the "Equifax Cybersecurity Incident" information and Link towards the top of the Main Page.

You will be instructed to input your Last Name and the Last 6 Digits of your Social Security Number. The Page will respond by giving you a specific date to Enroll in Equifax's Credit Monitoring Protection. This is for their Premier Service, and for Affected Individuals WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE. This Premier Service will monitor ALL THREE Credit Reporting Agencies for Fraudulent Activities.

Good Lord.
And of all sites, a credit monitoring service.
How long do you think it will be before they go under?
I mean, who is going to want to do business with them for credit protection when they can't even keep their own servers safe??

Equifax says 143 million consumers potentially hacked

Equifax Inc, a provider of consumer credit scores, said on Thursday a hack exposed the personal details of potentially 143 million U.S. consumers between mid-May and July.

The company's shares were down 5.4 percent in after-market trading

The company said criminals had accessed details including names, social security numbers, and, in some cases, driver's license numbers.

In addition, credit card numbers of around 209,000 U.S. consumers and certain dispute documents with personal identifying information of around 182,000 U.S. consumers were accessed, the company said.

From the Equifax Site:

In addition to the 143 Million Americans, "some" UK and Canadian Citizens have been affected as well. Equifax is currently discussing the matter with the respective governments.

From Krebs On Security: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/09/breach-at-equifax-may-impact-143m-americans/

... I have made no secret of my disdain for the practice of companies offering credit monitoring in the wake of a data breach — especially in cases where the breach only involves credit card accounts, since credit monitoring services typically only look for new account fraud and do little or nothing to prevent fraud on existing consumer credit accounts.

Credit monitoring services rarely prevent identity thieves from stealing your identity. The most you can hope for from these services is that they will alert you as soon as someone does steal your identity. Also, the services can be useful in helping victims recover from ID theft.

My advice: Sign up for credit monitoring if you can, and then freeze your credit files at the major credit bureaus (it is generally not possible to sign up for credit monitoring services after a freeze is in place). Again, advice for how to file a freeze is available here.

Sorry TL, I tried your link, but when I clicked on the info for the 143 Million(see link below), I just got a block from Open DNS, it mentioned phishing threat.

SAME HERE - using Open DNS. Switched back temporarily to the default from my ISP (ATT), flushed DNS cache etc, attempted with both Chrome & Firefox BOTH BLOCKED AS PHISHING ATTEMPT(s). Not willing to try loading with IE.

Looks like it will be a few days (maybe more) to see what happens with that link/web site's security status. Most likely it is being blocked due to it being a new web site and what type of personal information it is requesting.

@Vic & DrWhoFan,

Don't know what to tell you both; I'm ALSO using OpenDNS on both my Router and each computer in the house. I had no troubles getting to the Site.

Try this one:

[EDIT:]

"To enroll in complimentary identity theft protection and credit file monitoring, click here." <<<----- Find this at the VERY Top of the Page and Click the "Here" Link.

You will be asked for your Last Name, and the Last 6-Digits of your Social Security Number. THEN, you will be given a Date on which you may complete Registration for their Premier Credit Monitoring Solution. (No Time Frame is given as to how long Equifax will give US Customers FREE Credit Monitoring. When Anthem Blue Cross had this happen, they stated it would be ONE YEAR of Credit Monitoring; THEN, I got an e-Mail from that Credit Monitoring Program that Anthem had EXTENDED the offer AGAIN... So, I'm on my Second Year with Anthem's offer.)

And just to clarify for others, because I myself was not going to bother.
I was wrong with that thinking.

I just got a heads up from Lori (who works in the banking industry).

ANYBODY that has or has had credit in the past should check this out!
I was thinking that because I did not use Equifax services, I was not involved.
However, they have records on almost anybody that has used credit services.
Which at my age, I certainly have many times.

So, do follow up on this.

Meeeeeeeeeeow!

EDIT.....
I started enrollment and it said that I may be affected.
I have to go back to the site on 9/12 to finish the process.
Meow.

Since they are one of the three big credit bureaus they have data on you PERIOD. One of their sources is voter registration, so if you ever registered, they have you. If you ever had a credit card or took out a loan, they have you. If you ever had a checking account, they have you. It is called big data for a reason.

The problem with signing up to their free offer is that you are agreeing to absolve them of any an all responsibility for any errors or problems and will be ineligible for any compensation that results from a class action. If you have a problem, you personally have to take it up with the company. And we know how well those attempts work out.

Equifax’s apparent effort to strip consumers of their right to sue was brazen even for corporate America

The rights waiver has been removed thanks to New York's Attorney General

Equifax has changed its terms of service to note that users checking to see if they've been affected by a massive breach it endured are not waiving their right to file a class action lawsuit.

Prior to the update, users on social media pointed out that individuals using Equifax's tool to see if their information was compromised in a massive data breach could be giving up their rights to file or join a lawsuit against the company.

Equifax revealed on Thursday that hackers had gained access to the personal information of as many as 143 million Americans including names, Social Security numbers and birth dates.

In response, the company set up the website equifaxsecurity2017.com so users could see if their data was affected. However, fine print deep in the company’s terms of service for the website includes an arbitration clause waiving the users "ability to bring or participate in a class action, class arbitration or other representative action."

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) lambasted the arbitration language in Equifax’s terms of service on Friday, calling it “unacceptable and unenforceable.” Schneiderman tweeted that his office had contacted Equifax’s office demanding the clause be removed.

Yeah, we have them here too. The good part of the article is that at least a legal authority has weighed in that their attempt to stave off a class action with a waiver is legally worthless.
