Britain's 14 overseas territories are under UK sovereignty and jurisdiction - most are self-governing but they rely on the UK for defence, security and safety - including protection from natural disasters. While the French and the Dutch have permanent military bases in the Caribbean, the British forces are kept at sea ready to respond to UK territories spread out across the region.

Three British territories in the Caribbean, Anguilla, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands, have been hit by Hurricane Irma, says Foreign Office minister Sir Alan Duncan. £12m of disaster relief money has been made available. A humanitarian operation is under way, with a British naval relief team - including 40 Royal Marines and Army engineers - heading to the area. The British naval ship, the RFA Mounts Bay, is expected to arrive in the region later on Thursday.

The UK territory of Turks and Caicos is in the storm's path and still at risk. Virgin Atlantic said it has scheduled a relief flight "loaded with essential items" to help the recovery effort, including blankets and bottled water, to arrive in Antigua on Thursday.

On Wednesday Sir Richard Branson, who refused to leave his private retreat of Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), said he was "retreating to a concrete wine cellar" with his staff as the hurricane approached. Sir Richard's son Sam has since said his father is "OK" but there has been "lots of damage" to the island.

My thoughts go out to all in that area.

Especially to my step-son, his wife and their children just outside Orlando in Florida. I hope that Irma steps aside from there.

+1 Graham.

I just wanted to let people know, that despite our current troubles on the home front, we still take our ongoing responsibilities abroad very seriously.

Retreating to the wine cellar? Sounds good to me.
But seriously, my thought and prayers go out to everyone in the effected areas. I have been in contact with friend on boats and they have all headed south. No one I know has opted to try to ride it out.

Seriousness of the situation aside, I agree.
I mean, if you're gonna go out, why not go out in a wine cellar?

Hurricane Irma: UK response found wanting, MPs say

A concrete house w/roll up storm shutters, except for some tiles being missing, seems to have survived IRMA.
Still glad I wasn't there, and I hope the people there can get all the help they need.
H.R. 1469 makes SSI, EITC, ACA, Medicaid, SNAP, LiHeap, Heap, etc, etc, etc, all temporary, w/a 5yr lifetime limit like TANF! Can't work? Die!!

In severe cases like this whatever you do is never enough, and will always be criticised. It's all very well for politicians sitting on their arses in comfort, to pontificate.

What is the UK doing?

Humanitarian workers with 200 shelter kits and the British ship, RFA Mounts Bay, were sent to the area before the hurricane struck. The MoD-owned vessel arrived in Anguilla on Thursday and delivered six tonnes of emergency aid, with personnel there clearing roads and helping to restore power.

The ship has since arrived in the BVI - 90 miles to the west - to help with disaster relief efforts there.

Warship HMS Ocean is also being sent from the Mediterranean but is not expected to arrive for another two weeks.

The first British military flight to join the relief effort left RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on Friday carrying about 50 personnel - including engineers, marines and medics, as well as rations and water.

A further 10,000 aid buckets containing kit to help wash clothes and 5,000 have been loaded on to trucks at Kemble Airfield to be taken to either HMS Ocean or transport aircraft.

They did welcome the increase in relief funding for the territories to £32m.

Chris, is there any help going on in the UK, to resettle BVI inhabitants to the UK?

That is a good question Ulibelle. A quick glance shows that there is nothing specific at present, but I don't doubt that Britain would step up to the plate if necessary. We take our responsibilities to our overseas people very seriously. Else we wouldn't have sent a naval task force 8000 miles to the South Atlantic in 1982. If I hear any more i will let you know.

Please do. It sounds to me Barbuda should not be resettled.

The news is not good Uli :-(

About 95 percent of the tiny island of Barbuda, southeast from Necker Island, sustained damage, according to Gaston Browne, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda. Ghastly photos and videos from St. Martin and St. Barthelemy, also known as St. Barts, showed buildings in ruin and cars and trucks partially submerged in the storm surge

Washington post

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has insisted the UK was "not late" in its response to help British overseas territories hit by Hurricane Irma.
Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr show, he said the government's response had been "as good as anybody else's". Some 500 UK troops have been sent to Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, and British Virgin Islands (BVI).

Asked about reports of looting in the region, Sir Michael said there had been a "security issue" in the BVI. He added the UK was sending in armed troops backed up by additional police from Britain to help local authorities "ensure law and order is maintained". Sir Michael said: "We weren't late. We pre-positioned a ship in the Caribbean for the hurricane season, it wasn't by chance that Mounts Bay, a huge 16,000-tonne aid ship, with marines with a helicopter with pallets of aid was already in the Caribbean."

On Thursday, Sir Michael said the government was "stepping up" its relief effort after being told which airfields were clear to use. The UK is now sending up to three extra aid flights a day to the Caribbean to help communities affected by Hurricane Irma.

But there are worrying reports from people on the ground out there that say differently. I think that in this situation it is difficult to get a clear picture of what exactly is going on. But not only is short term response needed, it is also the planning and finance for long term support that also matters. It's far too easy to get caught up in provocative Media headlines.

And it's now at category 4, gaining strength, and due to hit the Keys in about an hour.

We've just heard from our son, near Orlando.

All the shops and Parks are closed. Holidaymakers are heading North. Light rain atm. They've been told to expect the main risk to be between 18:00 tonight and 06:00 tomorrow.

They're staying in their home, and they've lowered the water level in their pool by about 6 inches as it's close to the house (I'm not too sure this is enough). Their previous home had storm shutters, but he decided not to get them for this home (I hope they don't regret this choice.) They've cut the trees in their front and back gardens down and hoping for the best.

We're both thinking of them
Happy Crunching,

Graham
