I've always been curious about how the river lock system works here, so Sunday afternoon I went down to the wharf and took a cruising tour on the Belle of Louisville, which is a 103 year old steamboat, owned by the city of Louisville, Kentucky. The McAlpine Lock system(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McAlpine_Locks_and_Dam) controls the river level here so boats can navigate the abrupt change in elevation known as The Falls. Long before the Lock system was created, this rough river terrain caused people to stop and use the shore to move their boats downstream, thus making overnight stays necessary at the new frontier town of Louisville, established in 1778. Thanks. Well, it took forever with my internet connection to upload those short videos, and it was my first time using the movie feature on my DSLR. I also want to add that the RR bridge(K & I) just downriver of the Locks, has one metal planked lane for cars on either side of the tracks. The upriver RR bridge(the drawbridge style) is my favorite. It's cool to watch it in action. This is the northern portion of it, at sunset, about twelve years ago, from another Belle of Louisville cruise I took: The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Thank you Gordon. As friends can attest, I love locks, canals, narrowboats etc. Pluto will always be a Planet to me. |
