Thanks to Gianfranco the beta test version of BOINC 7.8.1 is available in Stretch-backports for those running Debian. Any issues found please report on the BOINC-alpha mailing list.

It might be possible to get it running under Raspbian if you have a Pi2 or Pi3 but you'll have to point to the Debian Stretch-backports repo as the Raspberry Pi foundation don't seem to have their own repo.

7.8.2 is available now, at least for amd64 architecture.

The armel/armhf architecture seems to have problem so no version for the Rpi yet.

I visited the link you provided. It is not obvious to me where the download link is for this new 7.82 version of BOINC. Do you think it fixes the problem I detailed in the BOINC 7.8.0 for Linux thread?

That sounds like you were looking at the instructions on adding Stretch-backports to a Raspberry Pi which I have on my blog. If you have Debian running Stretch on a normal PC (ie the amd64 architecture) you just need to add a line into your /etc/apt/sources.list that reads:
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-backports main contrib non-free

Then do a "sudo apt update" command followed by a "sudo apt install -t stretch-backports boinc-client boinc-manager" command without the quotes.

Having said that the manager still has the problem of jumping to the bottom of the task list if you have it sorted. It also does it for the transfers tab, even if you don't have it sorted. If that is the bug you were hoping to get a fix for its not in this version.

I'll have to search on just what stretch means. I have no clue. I am a newcomer to linux. No, I have never noticed the jumping tasks issue that TBar is concerned about. I am trying to get attention drawn to the problem of Network Activity state indication not changing in the Manager after changing states. I was just wondering if your 7.8.2 version had the problem that is in my 7.8.0 version.

Stretch is the current version of Debian (also known as Debian 9). To find out what version you are using in a terminal window type "uname -a" (without the quotes) and it should say what kernel and OS version it is.

Update: I have just played around with the network activity and it seems to behave. Suspend Network works correctly and making it always available also seems to work, The Activity Menu in Advanced mode shows the radio buttons correctly.

Thanks, looks like I need to move up to 7.8.2. This is my output:

keith@Darksider:~$ uname -a
Linux Darksider 4.10.0-33-generic #37~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 11 14:07:24 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
keith@Darksider:~$

I don't see my status radio buttons ever update the change after making one. Might it be a problem with video driver or Desktop UI?

I am running the repository video driver 375.66 and the standard Ubuntu desktop.

According to that you're running Ubuntu 16.04.1. Its not the same as Debian but its based upon it. Gianfranco has a ppa with 7.8.2 in it for Ubuntu:
https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/boinc

I have the 375.66 driver as well so I don't think it is causing your problem.

Thanks to Gianfranco BOINC 7.8.3 has hit Stretch-backports. Here is the change log from the BOINC message boards (thanks Jord),

Preliminary Change Log 7.8.2 -> 7.8.3
- client: extensions, fixes to account manager functionality
- client: eliminate possible buffer overflow in reporting result errors
- lib: fix boinc_file_exists() on Windows
- Mac: Changes to Xcode project to support screensaver changes for Mac OS 10.13.
- Screensaver: Changes for screensaver to support Mac OS 10.13
- api: BOINC graphics library changes to support Mac OS 10.13
- client library: inconsistent terminology for intel_gpu
- update project list
- Locale: Update french localization files
- update installshield files

For those running Ubuntu Gianfranco has a ppa you can get it from.

It does not fix the tasks tab/transfers tab from jumping to the bottom or the event log date format issues.

Note Debian did a 9.2 point release on the 7th of October that included a buggy Nvidia driver. It goes into idle mode after 15 minutes of compute tasks so you might want to skip the upgrade of Nvidia-kernel-dkms.

For Fedora/RedHat/CentOS

sudo dnf config-manager --set-enable updates-testing
sudo dnf install boinc-manager

Test reports can be sent to the alpha testing project and bugs can be reported to the Fedora or Debian bug trackers respectively.

It works on my SuSE Linux Leap 42.2 running SETI, Einstein and LHC with VirtualBox 5.2.0 which shows a nice Penguin.

Some corrections from the email lists...
Steffen Moeller wrote:
kind of :)

For the regular user of Debian-derived distros, "sudo apt-get install boinc" is the way to go. No extras.

boinc-manager is the GUI for controlling local or remote clients.
boinc-client is the client with the boinccmd command line.

to install both in one go there is the aforementioned third package (consisting only of dependencies to boinc-manager and boinc-client) with the name "boinc".

Both Debian and Ubuntu have BOINC packages shipping as regular parts of their distribution since version 5.2.15 in March 2006. This is some freaking 12 years, see http://snapshot.debian.org/package/boinc/. Mint also takes it from there. The PPA (personal package archive) of Gianfranco is a neat extra service for those aiming at running the very latest very early but do not run the latest version of the distribution (where does this guy get all the energy from? Ubuntu Artful is on 7.8.3,
Zesty still on 7.6.33, but later backports to the earlier versions of Ubuntu are to be expected). The same Gianfranco (and sometimes also I) do for the backports.debian.org. It is all in perfect shape as seen on https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/boinc. As TarotApprentice had pointed out, this needs an extra flag to apt-get like -t stretch-backports to be
installed instead of the sufficiently recent of Debian stable.

The number of Debian installations are mostly invariant at https://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=boinc. The Ubuntu PopCon is a bit more tedious to read - 45204 installations are reported from those who installed the popularity-contest package. No idea about the other Debian derivatives.

OpenSuSE has https://software.opensuse.org/package/boinc-client but is still at 7.2.42.
For arch I found https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/BOINC and https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?q=boinc but they are still at 7.6.33. I have no contact to either of those maintainers but would only be worried for the also RPM-based SuSE community.

I very much agree that a distribution-agnostic self-extracting static version makes perfect sense until those distributions are also covered. However, I would rather work on finding volunteer packagers for those platforms than to work on the .sea for those who do not want to compile the very latest versions themselves. archlinux likely only needs a friendly email informing the maintainers that the 7.8.3 can now be trusted.

Cheers,

Steffen
