The Seti world would be a much better place if someone could figure out how to get Petri's app to work on Windoz.

The biggest hurdle is getting the linux installation working. TBar has made is so simple to get BOINC and Petri's/TBar's "special app" working with his All-in-One package it is just amazing . Just unpack the archive to the desktop and click on the Manager and you are up and running the special app.

No, the BOINC platform and special app package is a one click and you are running. You still need a Linux installation working first. But Linux is mostly a click the ISO file installation itself now. Heck you can even run it from a USB click drive.

I want to run Einstein also so that seems to be overly complicated for me , especially on my daily driver.

Yes, there is a thread over at Einstein documenting the issues with Linux 16.04 and the problems with the graphics drivers especially for ATI. If you are interested just in the special app for SETI, it is really simple to get it running. TBar has already written the app_config configuration for AP and MB CPU and GPU apps. It really is one click to get running. You still can run any other project as stock by simply adding the project to the Manager.

Don't know how, as mine similar only gets me to 20k RAC...with optimised SoG & sah as beast I knew...

Well, mine 1050Ti lately got some hick ups with newer drivers...still it gets me 12-20k RAC with optimization!

& just checked with 2 same cards, they produce the same amount of work on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS & on Win 10. So don't know how he gets those 30-50% more output?! ;)

As has been highlighted in replies and pointed out, he is running the "special app" by Petri/TBar. You are running stock apps. It is not an apples to apples comparison. More like night and day.

If you are a basic user and don't want to get lost in the weeds trying to figure out how it all works (ie spending many many hours chasing down things) I would probably tell you to stick with windows. I know many people here LOVE the linux but you only need to look at the different threads (Post) in the Number Crunching to see how long they have been chasing down issues with that configurations. I would say if you are not at least a mid to high level user that loves doing command lines, you would probably just wait. I'm going to get hell for saying it, but the linux route is not a set and forget application at this time..

I am running Einstein@home and SETI@home, both CPU and GPU, on 2 Linux boxen, with the OpenSUSE Leap OS. On LHC@home, which uses VirtualBox, I have problems on all projects except SixTrack, so I run them on a Windows 10 PC. All my tasks are stock apps, no app_config.xml files.

Maybe I might have been overstating the simplicity a bit. But as you've noted, we have been chasing down configuration challenges now for quite a while and have figured out how to get around just about everything with very simple, really, instructions on how to get up and running on the special app in Linux. I could write a 10 point instruction list easily to do so. All the necessary info and instructions have been posted either in Number Crunching "Linux CUDA 'Special' App finally available, featuring Low CPU use" thread, "Boinc v7.8.0 for linux" or Crunchers Anonymous "New BOINC All-In-One Build to run zi3v CUDA 8.0 in Ubuntu 16.04" threads. They just need to be pulled together into one definitive tome. You only need to use the command line two times, first to pull down the CUDA 8.0 libraries and then again to drag and drop boinc and boincmgr onto a ldd command to check for any missing dependencies. If any. You might have to download one extra package from the simple Software Center GUI or the Synaptic Package Manager GUI interface if you are running a uncommon Linux distribution to fix a missing dependency. TBar has worked through a ton of linux distribution package levels and BOINC levels going back to 7.2 and all the way through current 7.8.2. It really isn't rocket science. Just follow simple instructions and examples. The pioneers already have the arrows in their backs to give the settlers a smooth transition and landing.

[Edit] Correction. The CUDA 8.0 libraries are not even coming from the repositories. They are hosted on a Google Drive cloud account and are a simple download. Just unpack the files into the BOINC SETI projects folder.

That is a pre-Win10 driver so he can't use it, Win10 drivers start at 340.xx. ;-)
