Some Chinese made glasses cloned American paper optics. Here is a page that will allow you to tell if your glasses are real and safe or clones and suspect. Are your glasses safe |

I'm watching KTLA 5 on tv thru 12 noon, but then I don't have the glasses, and I don't feel like going outside, normally I have a hard time getting out before noon anyway, so this is purrfect. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

The Science Channel will offer the most coverage of the eclipse-- from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time (8 am to 1p.m. Pacific). The commercial broadcast networks will offer some live coverage too. I would hesitate to recommend online sites, as these tend to become quickly oversubscribed, and inaccessible during events like this. |

Don't forget to keep an eye on any pets you have if you are in the eclipse area. They might just be a little confused and freighted. |

The eclipse brings people together. Our two guests, friends of my son, arrived last night. My son went to ST John's college in Santa Fe. Wound up mostly working in coffee shops. While there in DC there was a young girl working there in the coffee shop who also went to St Johns--3 years behind my son--they didn't know each other. So: these two guests who actually met at the coffee shop, also have friends in the Nashville area. Makes for a smaller world and a wide community. |

The eclipse here begins at 9:05am, and ends at 11:47am or so, according to NBC LA 4. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

In Oregon and the US west coast the moon will begin moving in front of the Sun at 9:04 am local time. The Sun will be completely obscured at 10:15 am and totality will last for 1 minute and 51 seconds. I guess you wont notice anything before 10 am when it begin to be slightly dark and the colors become different since southern California only will have a about 70% obscure. I have witness a 70% obscure and if I didn't knew about it would have gone unnoticed. |

And without the proper eye wear, do not look at the sun, to do so is dangerous for your eyesight. This is aimed at everyone here. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Pretty overcast here right now, dunno if there will be much to see other than a general darkening. There are a few cloudless patches, so maybe. Meow. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I suppose I'll watch what I can on-line, but I sure ain't flying over to the US for just a few minutes darkness....I did once fly from the UK to southern Turkey (mediterranean coast) to see an eclipse - I reckoned that was worth it. Good seeing, everyone. |

After dinner with the museum guys, I didn't even go home. There was talk for days about the expected traffic on the interstates heading south and I wanted to get out ahead of it. I took I-39 south to where it joins 55 in Bloomington, then headed for Chester, Ill. I also heard even the cheap motels were upwards of $150 for the night (and Southern Illinois University was renting dorm rooms for similar prices, including in a building they've quit using but haven't torn down yet. Anyway, I figured I'd find a truck stop somewhere and park off in the corner for a few hours of sleep. When I got to Chester, I found that a lot of parking lots were closed off, with the owners intending to charge for parking during the day. The nearest truck stop is a good half hour away. About 5am, I found a spot on the street that would be in the shadow of a building as the sun rose, plugged my CPAP into the inverter, and shut my eyes. I decided to pass on taking my sleeping pills, just in case a cop came along and ordered me to move. What I didn't count on was a lot of truck activity just after sunrise. But I doggedly kept the mask on and my eyes mostly shut for four hours (still building up the stats on the CPAP) and I drifted down to dream level a few brief times. At four hours and two minutes, I took it off, unplugged it from the power, and went in search of a bathroom and breakfast.. Then, as the town was filling up with people and cars, I headed south on Illinois Route 3. It goes pretty much right down the center of the path of totality toward Carbondale, where the hoopla is even greater. SIU is also selling tickets to watch in their stadium. Keep me away from there. WGN TV's weather guru Tom Skilling is live in Makanda, ten miles south of Carbondale, where he will get the longest totality of anywhere in the US. I just opened the interior sun roof cover and took a picture with my phone, but I don't see a bite yet. Tom does, though, and I'm west of him. There are some high thin clouds here, but I don't think it will be a problem. I hope and expect to get home about bedtime tonight. There are some high thin clouds here, but I don't think it will be a problem. Maybe the dirt on the sun roof is a problem. I opened it and I think I see the bite now, but not as big as they're showing live from Makanda. The news also just showed a live shot of totality in Oregon. The BBC has just broadcast live NASA images of totality from Madras, Oregon. Looks like there are some good prominences on the leading edge as the sun starts to emerge from totality, before the 'diamond ring' effect. |
