Well, I gotta drive to work in about 15 minutes.
Hope the eclipse doesn't knock me off the highway..................

This is a good reminder of why I don't live this far south. I just stepped out of the car for a minute and it's awful. I now have the fan all the way up to 5 to overcome the heat that got in. Made myself a pinhole viewer, but it's not seeing much either. Other people are out of their cars looking at it with welding masks. Maybe if I had that, I'd see it better.

It's noticeably darker out now. I'm going to switch to my regular glasses. It's weird because it's not the usual twilight kind of dark.

THAT WAS COOL!!!

I got out of the car to ask if I could borrow someone's welding mask and a guy offered me an extra pair of glasses. Then I finally saw the crescent of sun around the moon. It got dark enough that my headlights came on. I went back to turn them off and get my DSLR. Then suddenly it was just dark. I took a whole bunch of pictures of the ring around the moon. Then even more suddenly it was light again. After that, it seemed to get bright even faster than it got dark.

I'm going to put my sunglasses back on and call a friend who's in St. Louis today.

Howdy,

Hope you all had/will have fun, safely.

It got up to about 81% (i'm told) here in northeast Texas about 15 min. ago.

Did the same thing this time as I did during the 1979 eclipse. Cobbled together a pinhole 'viewer', projected it onto a suitable flat surface, and showed it to people that wished to see it safely. Sorry, but I don't trust those el-cheapo mass-marketed 'eclipse glasses'. I would trust high quality professional welders mask with the darkest available filter for BRIEF viewing.

Even at 81%, it is still obviously around noon during the Texas summertime, but the light level was only slightly less bright than normal.

I wish I could have gotten away and gone two or three states North (a quite long drive) to the path of totality. But... There is always Apr. 8, 2024, when right here we will be in the path of totality.

I decided to stay home and watch it from the backyard. At 96%, it didn't get dark outside, but the light took on an eerie quality that's hard to describe, and the house's outdoor floodlights turned themselves on.

I didn't want to damage my digital SLR because I didn't have a solar filter for it, so I used my 35 mm film SLR, along with my solar glasses. I'll be curious to get that roll of film developed. I used several different manual exposure settings.

I could see a total eclipse a few years ago in hungary.
It was amazing.
It took half an hour until it was dark but only a few minutes to get normal again.

Yes the light becomes very different and as you say hard to describe even at partial solar eclipses.
Anybody here have an explanation to this?

I like the NASA pic that shows the ISS passing the sun during a partial solar eclipse from Wyoming.

Cheers.

I was asleep until a bathroom call woke me. Looked outside and saw it was kind of dark and got my paper glasses. I live a bit southeast of Oklahoma City. So I saw a very thin crescent of sun showing. I was just lucky to wake up at the right time and glad I did.

The eclipse was all white light. 93% here. Sunset and sun rise light is filtered through the more atmosphere, side ways vs. vertical, giving the light color. The lack of colored light was eerie for me.

I had no glasses, so I could only stay inside, and watch on tv, now it's over, so is tv too, at least until someone goes to the mountain to fix things.

The Eclipse was very cool and I'm happy I was there, the 360 degree sunset was something I did not expect. The traffic down I5 Sunday to Ore was bad, it should have been 4 hrs, it was 5 1/2. Then I came home after the event. 11 1/2 hrs, if there is a next time for me I will plan better.

I hit no traffic on the way to the viewing location. Local traffic reports also reported light traffic on Sunday and in the morning on Monday. It took 1 hour to get from Eugene to Independance. But afterwards, it took me 3 hours back and the other car with my friends who left before me it took them 6 hours back to Eugene. They used Google Maps, I used Ways.

Sorry we did not meet up. But it was a full day.

My group arrived Sunday night at Cambridge Idaho. We stayed at a RV park and had perfect skies. On Monday after the event, the women dawdled around in fabric shops and thrift stores and we hit up the Eclipse festival again in Weiser for more shirts and hats. By the time we hit the road again to head back we were at the back of the pack with all the slow traffic far ahead of us so we made good time with no traffic mostly.

Nice images. I hope to get some from an amateur that had a nice imaging rig on the back of a Celestron HD8. I am more interested in his bracketed sequence shots of totality with his piggy-backed DSLR. He was using Baader Solar film too. I've always like the color of the Baader film. I noticed that all the cheap paper eclipse glasses produced an orange image, like the old Thousand Oaks Optical glass filters. They were not appealing to me.

I had my grab 'n go 80mm refractor with Baader Solar film on a alt-azimuth mount and my Coronado PST on a camera tripod. Everyone enjoyed the views and it was nice that the Sun provided a few prominences to view through the solar scope.
