Hoping someone can help with this issue. I set up an older PC with Mint Linux (Intel 4 core CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz , Linux 4.4.0-89-generic). It processes 4 files at a time, does not use GPU RAM. File processing gets slower as the % processed increases. Sometimes processing completes fine, other times it goes to 99.999% where it stays until seti@home aborts it after a day or so. Rebooting the PC seems to fix the issue, but it has to be rebooted every single day. I was hoping this would be a low or no maintenance setup.

Can this be fixed through a configuration change, or is the PC at fault?

Thanks.

First things to check are your hardware and RAM...

Does your system survive being checked over by Memtest86+ and also the GIMPS 'torture test'?

Is the cooling for your system dusty and needs cleaning out?

Another thing to look at is for how much memory is available, and that the HDD passes a disk check ok.

Or are you been caught out by the system going into sleep/powersave mode?!

Hope that goes some way to diagnose.

Good luck,
Martin

Further thought:

If this is a 'first try' on that machine, note that the progress bar is only an estimation. The WU can run on for some time beyond 100% until the estimate catch up to the actual performance.

(And then there is the very interesting world of optimizing the trade-offs for the use of hyper-threading and the size of the CPU cache and the memory bandwidth ;-) )

Good luck,
Martin

Thanks for the suggestions Martin. I ran memtest86+ for about 22 hours on all RAM and no errors were found. The BIOS and other configurations seem fine.

The linux system is not used for much of anything else, so seti@home has been given access to all RAM, full CPU time, the complete paging file, etc. Many files process in 5 - 10 hours, then upload and are validated. Others go to 99.999% or sometimes 100% after 30+ hours, upload and then seti@home reports "Error while computing". I assume the results are discarded so this is a waste of time.

But - if I reboot the linux machine when processing is in the high 90s the same files reprocess and upload with no problem. Rebooting once a day would probably solve the problem but I don't want to do that.

Lee,

Has this problem 'gone away' or not seen since?

Checking your current tasks, there is only one error shown and that is for a timeout... One of your hung at 99% tasks?

Task 5900178807

Workunit 2618672357

That one might be of interest if you see any more get hung.

And rather than doing the 'workaround' of doing resets, better is to check for a fix for all cases.

Welcome to the big crunch!

Keep searchin',
Martin
