Message 1881755 - Posted: 3 Aug 2017, 6:17:16 UTC

The UC Berkeley Space Science Laboratory Domain Name Services (DNS) server has been having problems for the past 24 hours, and a wildlands fire near the Space Sciences Lab has prevented SSL personnel from fixing the problem.

Because of this, any server functions (i.e. password reset, forum notifications) that require email interaction are not working for most people.

If the problems continue tomorrow its likely that BOINC clients will eventually lose access to the SETI@home servers until the DNS server can be repaired.

Sadly, I'm already seeing DNS problems, specifically connecting to the scheduler and the upload server - probably also the download server too, but I haven't had to contact that on the mine-canary machine yet.

I had no issues because i work with IP adresses to the server all the time. So no issues at all.

In the other way, i hope nobody gets hurt while the fire was burning....

This will prolly sound like a dumb question. Can't we redirect traffic to a new DNS or back upDNS? is ther no back up DNS? Forgive me, I dont really know much about servers. Sorry :-|

Is providing us with host file entries so we can upload/download work units a workable solution until it gets sorted?

No work should be lost unless you abort or do anything stupid.

A work-around has been posted in number crunching already.

Unforunately the backup DNS server is suffering from the same problem, which now appears to be a fault in a power distribution system. Power has been shut down to the entire 3rd floor of SSL, which is where the SSL server room is. I'll let you know what's up as things progress.

There shouldn't be any lost work or problems with new work. Uploads will be accepted when they come in.

Thanks for the update Eric.
That explains why things are "a bit chewy" just now.

I hope these power problems aren't a result of testing the new SETI@Home toaster ;-

Work uploading slowly from the UK now.

Hey, I've had my name down for a Seti toaster for 16 years, are we actually at the testing stage? Yeehaw :-))

Power has been shut down to the entire 3rd floor of SSL, which is where the SSL server room is.

I assume it has to be there for operational reasons and not at the CoLo?

Yeah, the name servers for ssl.berkeley.edu belong to the lab, so that's where they are located.

Anyway, thing are back up. It may take a while for things to clear, though.
