that's a hell of a board to get for free! dual 10G LANs is amazing. but unfortunately it forces you into expensive ram and CPU choices. you could always sell the board, then use the money to buy cheaper/older hardware.

anyway, sometimes with the ES chips, you have to just take the gamble and try if it works. The vendor may be apprehensive with confirming compatibility with any board because he doesn't want to make promises and then have it not work and you wanting to return the chip. It doesn't mean it wont work.

check this out. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2670-V3-12-Core-2-3-GHZ-SR1XS-ES-Processor/132509866842?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3Dd3b93afcc18a45ec8eb738c14bde4a50%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D132509866842%26itm%3D132509866842&_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042
probably the best priced one for now. just too bad you'll have to bid and deal with competition. no buy it now option.

personally, i have 3 systems with the v1/v2 E5-2600 Xeon chips. each in a 2 CPU config. each running CPU tasks on all available threads minus 2 threads for GPU tasks.

2x E5-2690 v1 (8c/16t ea)
2x E5-2680 v2 (10c/20t ea)
2x E5-2697 v2 (12c/24t ea)

Hmm, a thought. From what I have seen boards like that sell for, it would put a bit dent in a 1800X system, or at least a TR board if you have to spend big $$ on a CPU.

In the ASUS page the ASUS X99-E-10G WS is compatible with a lot of CPU's, even the 6850 i use, just need to update the BIOS if your MB is old.

Look at: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/X99-E-10G-WS/HelpDesk_CPU

It's seems like a very nice piece of hardware.

BTW There are more of them for free where you buy it? Maybe i could buy one... or two.... LOL

Well the reason I don't want to sink much money in it is this board proved unstable after 45 minutes load from the previous owner. So it may be a duff board. The prior owner took that memory, storage and cpu and dropped that into a new board and it fired right up and has been running over 4 days now with full BOINC load. I said I would take it mainly because I wanted to familiarize myself with Intel hardware. Have never seen any of this stuff before, it's all new to me. Don't know the history, the technology or the lingo.

Well then, I would get RAM that you could reuse in a future Ryzen build, and get the cheapest CPU you can find to test with.

I think to buy one of them when i planing to rebuild my main host but I read in some place about that model of board, it has serius troubles when you try to run all the pcie slots at 16x, but was the first models and with the first bios. Never know if they fix the problem but i imagine they do since they continue to sell after that. Just not remember where. A 5850 will work there too and it has the 40 pcie lines it needs to run the 4xpcie slots. I have no experience with the E5 stuff.

That's been my thinking and actions so far. I have been bidding on quad channel kits that I could use in a future Ryzen build. My main stalemate is the uncertainty in which processors are compatible since I can't find any cheap i7 6800K used or pulled high core count Xeon on eBay that is not ES. Supposed to be retail or at least QS.

The memory I have seen up for sale is invariably off brand 2133 stuff or Hynix dies. I know that for maximum compatibility that Ryzen RAM should be Samsung B-die. I lost a bid on some G.Skill Ripjaws 3000 which I know is Hynix but Ryzen has been steadily improving the Hynix choices at least up to 2933.

Yes, I was very excited to learn it could do 4 X PCIe16. Lots of possibilities. Never had any board before that could run more than 3 cards.

It could have been his memory as well. Don't know if he was using the same memory in the new board. I had a that issue, did stress test on the memory, everything passed but I'd still get random crashes. Eventually I booted with only 1 stick at time and ran BOINC. Found the bad stick. Put in new stick and haven't had a problem since.

Keith, you might want to see if you can pick up a used i7. That is what I did for one of my builds, found it at a local computer store. 8 core/16 thread. Think I paid $295 for it. Hard to remember, been so long.

Be aware the 6800 has 28 lines, will not drive the 4xpcie slots.

You need a 40 pcie line CPU like the 5850, 6850, etc.

Or a E5 equivalent CPU with the 40 lines.

So not go for the 6800/5800 if you want to try to run with GPUs on the 4 slots

I do believe the original system was a new build and not one that had been running forever. But I do think the original builder has typical enthusiast troubleshooting skills. I will have to inquire whether any troubleshooting steps were taken or whether he ran out of time and patience and punted on the board.

Its eBay or no way for me for any used components. I am rural and my only source of computer hardware is Amazon or Newegg.

Keith, funny, that is the motherboard that I have for my CAD workstation, and am in the beginning process of setting it up now. Just got done a couple days ago assembling it and then updating the BIOS to the latest version, and now am fighting with the RAID. I have 2 Samsung 2TB 850's that I am trying to run in RAID 0, but when I go thru it in the Express setup, and tell it I want to set up RAID, and it asks me to confirm that I actually want to do this, then after the reboot, neither of the drives are seen in the BIOS, nor the DVD drive, and they were all there when it was set to AHCI, so I'm a bit confused. Probably going to have to call ASUS tomorrow and plumb the depths of their tech support looking for an answer. I ended up going with an i7-6950X proc (new open box off of Ebay, I just checked, can't believe what they are getting for them new new!), assuming that an up to date, cutting edge program like Solidworks has the ability to use multiple, reasonably fast cores, but talking with them when I was out at the Solidworks World show a week ago in LA, I found out that they really don't, and probably won't for at least a couple years. The thing needs to be fed GHz, not cores.. Oh well, I'll be ready for it when it does get hungry for more cores! :-)

I will commiserate with you. I lurk on the Ryzen and Threadripper threads and I have seen a lot of traffic about getting converted over from AHCI to Raid. It seems it is not as simple as simply selecting RAID in the BIOS. One tip I have seen mentioned several times is that after switching to Raid, no drives are seen again because the system can't read the the BCD control block and that the solution is to load the RAID driver first before switching from AHCI to Raid.

I talked to ASUS support on Saturday and they answered fast and gave me the news I was expecting but didn't want to hear. Hope you get good help from them too.

That goes back to that other discussion - you will want to run with threading off then to give it the most power you can.

What was the bad news you received? And glad that they at least answered the phone promptly, and gave you competent advice, I've read that sometimes it can be hit or miss.

That the board only had local warranty not in force in the U.S.

Yuppers, and I have it on water, though only on a Corsair all in one. I think it's the H110i, it's the one with the better pump/waterblock. It'll be interesting to see how far I can comfortably push it. I went with 64 gig of Kingston 3000MHz DDR4 DIMM CL15, Kit Of 4 XMP HyperX Predator, and WOW has the price on them gone up! They're now between $250 and 300 more than when I bought them late last summer.. I heard that DDR4 was getting painful, but as I haven't bought any for a while, thank goodness, I had no idea. Ugh.

Oooh, out of the country warranty limitations. Bummer! Hope you can wrangle it into working happily! Maybe one of the memory slots is just flaky, or something simple like that and you can run with 2 sticks.

local

Where is local? Maybe if you ask a friend/mate to place the RMA there will be easy. At least is what i do when things like that happening, And you receive a 100% working MB.
