Well there is now. It;s been a month and the biggest mystery in modern times for a Naval vessel has happened and not a word in here. What in the world could have been going on on the bridge of the Fitzgerald to allow it to be rammed by a ship twice its size but only capable of less than half its speed. Nobody at the wheel? Who was supposed to be monitoring the radars? Where were the required lookouts? Could it be that on the midwatch maybe some hanky and some panky was happening distracting those who were responsible for running the ship? What has happened to the world's morbid curiosity. Well there is now. Maybe 1) The morbid curiosity is drawn elsewhere. 2) We had our morbid curiosity burned out of us after discussing missing planes for more than a year? 3) ? Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Quite likely, I have an opinion from a naval engineer who should know, the Fitzgerald can stop in 1 1/2 ship length from flank speed, it has s variable pitch prop. Another source who is a coast guard certified master, a captain, stated " in those crowded waters he should have been on the bridge not asleep in his stateroom". |

Could it be that on the midwatch maybe some hanky and some panky was happening distracting those who were responsible for running the ship? The Captain will be somewhat of a victim here and will at least never command a ship in the Navy again. A captain can't be on the bridge 24/7 so he has to trust his senior officers and others who man the bridge. Apparently discipline broke down on board that ship which is the Captains responsibility. You see trouble approaching and the first thing you do is call the Captain to the bridge. I'm pretty sure the Captains stateroom is very nearby. The fact that he was still asleep indicates to me that no alarm was sounded and the only way that could have happened is if no one was awake on the bridge to sound the alarm. So, again where the heck were they? Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

http://ktla.com/2017/07/21/initial-investigation-blames-navy-for-uss-fitzgerald-collision/ Preliminary findings in the investigation into the collision between the USS Fitzgerald and a Philippine cargo ship off the coast of Japan in June suggest the accident was caused by multiple errors by the Fitzgerald’s crew and a failure to take action in the minutes leading to the collision, according to two defense officials. |

Movements of Container Ship ACX CRYSTAL involved in a Collision with USS Fitzgerald https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1b58yelh_c Perhaps it's about time that all vessels should have transponders showing positions in real time. Just like in aviation that even military planes are obliged to use. USS Fitzgerald sailed without one apparently. Another thing is of course having the bridge manned 24/7 when sailing in heavy traffic. The captain and the chief mate are supposed to alternate being at the watch when sailing. |

Somebody or several somebodies won't be in the Navy much longer. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Movements of Container Ship ACX CRYSTAL involved in a Collision with USS Fitzgerald They have very sophisticated radars that show all ship movement in real time. But it's only good if someone is watching all the time. We have a lot of commercial traffic coming into and going out of the local port and at 18-20 kts in clear weather there is a lot of time to avoid a collision. It's not like aircraft flying at 500 kts where you only have seconds to make the right decision to avoid colliding. The Navy hasn't quite admitted that the on duty watch wasn't doing their duty or what they were doing in the minutes preceding the collision and by now I'm sure they have the information they need. The more I read about the collision it seems to me that both captains on the vessels are responsible for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Fitzgerald_and_MV_ACX_Crystal_collision There are discrepancies about the time of collision. USS Fitzgerald not following the Right-of-way rules. Personnel involved Independent analyst Steffan Watkins said it is likely there was no one on the bridge of the ACX Crystal,[24] though investigation officials have not commented on this.[25] After hitting Fitzgerald, ACX Crystal continued on course for 30 minutes, then returned to the collision location. Afterwards, she resumed her original course.[25] Investigators are still seeking to understand why Fitzgerald's crew and sensor systems do not seem to have detected ACX Crystal in time to avoid the incident.[25] ACX Crystal's captain, in a report to the ship's owner seen by Reuters, said that Fitzgerald continued sailing on a collision course despite ACX Crystal signalling with flashing lights the imminent danger. The US Navy did not comment on the report.[26] Very strange movements by ACX Crystal after the collision. Why did it took 30 minutes to make the U-turn? Did someone make a distress Pan-Pan call on channel 16? Hopefully the Sea-protest will clarify this. |

It was a Stealth Container Ship. ;-) LOL:) Beware US Navy. Well there are MANY more hypothesis around on the Internet suggesting all kind of crazy things. I hope that seamen all over the world could sleep though after this event. |

Top two officers and other sailors aboard the USS Fitzgerald to be disciplined following deadly collision at sea The top two officers and the top enlisted sailor who were aboard the destroyer USS Fitzgerald are among about a dozen sailors who will face discipline following an early-morning collision June 17 that killed seven crew members, a senior Navy officer said Thursday. |
