One should NEVER rely on any of the on-line photo sharing sites as one's storage for one's photos. Over the years several have vanished, many have been hacked, and most are heading into the "pay to use" camp. Given the cost of an external hard disk or two and the simplicity of transferring everything from the camera/phone/tablet to such devices I opted a long time ago for a pair of external drives and save everything twice for a small fraction of the price of a year's subscription with enough disk space to satisfy my needs. I only use on-line storage for stuff I want to share.

interesting. I'm wondering if it depends on where you are and when you set up your free account. Or perhaps how much data you use / hotlink.

In any case it seems to be time to move on.

+1 for that Rob Smith, I rely on My hdd, here on the Beast, whatever is on the old Bucket, can be deleted at will, it means breaking links, but that's life.

It just flabbergasts me the price they want for all this, and boggles my mind anybody using the service casually like most of us appear to do, would pay it. I sure won't. Yikes.

It is also causing a bit of a problem across websites and blogs where the website/blog has used pictures and bits of pictures in it's design.

Have a look here:

http://raloria.livejournal.com/

Scroll down a bit and you will see the effect.

Many are suggesting that Photobucket will rethink this as people will not pay for something that has been free for the past 10 years.

It's just such a jump from free to $$$+!

Not just any jump! They have 3 price plans with the 1st 2 no 3rd party hosting. The 3rd does but at £307.68 per year, no way Jose.

Or NOT.
They may not give a rat's petoot.
If they are smart, they have done some very careful calculations..................

If they lose 80% of their customer base...........so what?
Non paying customers, actually a cost because Photobucket has to pay for storage and bandwidth to keep their accounts alive.
The only revenue from non-subscription users is whatever advertising revenue Pb gets for force feeding ads to their browser and any prints or other goods Pb offers that they might purchase. I suspect it's not much.

They probably figure that the percentage of users that stay onboard and pay the extortion will offset anything they may lose.

I am not saying that giving probably tens of thousands of internet users the high hard one is a good business model, but maybe they are looking for short term profitability.

For that sort of money, you can buy some massive, high spec 'Enterprise' HDDs, with plenty of change. Crazy.

True. But for most people, at least initially, the site was not about storage. It was about a place that would host pictures on a server that others could access for sharing or posting online.

Over some 15+ years or so, I held a number of Domain Names and even the 'top end' of hosting on those domains for business, on a dedicated server, is still less than half the cost that Gutbucket want now. Perhaps they're relying on people thinking in terms of £/$X cost per month - some will think that cheap, for their 5 minutes of fame.

I know. https://www.powweb.com/ And for that price you can host all of photobucket, not just your little part.

This is a sorry way to free up server space. Looks like I will be going to Flicker until they do this too. Just wish I could remember my Flicker password.
Pb will suffer I hope in they long term. Some ppl have voices and long memories.

I tried imgur for the first time, today, and it worked fine, but as everybody has said, it's just a matter of time if PB is leading the way...

I deleted a lot of My photos and albums, plus I left a renamed album, to send a message, Net Neutrality or the lack might be behind this...
