I received this email today from Photobucket WE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN USING The Plus 500 is $5.99 (£7.99) a month or $59.99 a year. In the meantime all my photos have been replace with a "please upgrade" image. I assume this will affect other so it's pay up or no pics. Not good business practice as there was no warning that they were going to do this and have allowed me to link to third party websites at "my current account level" for years So sorry but I will not be paying. I will have to find an alternative in future. Any suggestions |

First Photobucket started blocking you from logging in UNLESS you disabled your ad-blocker(s)......... now this. Guess it is time to look for somewhere else to store photos for forums, etc. Currently do not know of any others. |

I got that email as well, but my email service routed it to spam. Are we sure it's genuine? (edit - all my recent images seem to be showing normally, but they're not third-party. I see yours are gone, so I suppose it was genuine after all. Sigh.) |

I got that email as well, but my email service routed it to spam. Are we sure it's genuine? So far I have not seen any email(s) at my in-box or spam folders. This could be because I use a 3rd party "disposable" and unique email for most web sites and the service automatically filters out spam/junk mail before it reaches my real in-box. Will keep an eye out for it. |

Yes and I notice some other posters images are gone too. However I made a big mistake with the prices in my first post. The cost of the 500 Plus plan is $39.99 (£30) a month or $399 (£306) a year. I really cannot afford £30 a month!! |

The cost of the 500 Plus plan is $39.99 (£52) a month or $399 (£518) a year.I think you must have the exchange rate the wrong way round - pounds are still bigger than dollars, despite our government's recent attempts to drive them through the floor. But either way, it's still too much, I agree. |

When I first started using Photobucket in 2004, I was on a free plan, but at some point I "upgraded" to what they call Plus20, which runs $24.95 a year. I may be grandfathered in, because I don't think they offer that tier anymore. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

I have had a paid Photobucket account for years, but it is middle grade one. This is a test to see if it still works. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

I guess SETI (or someone else) will have to provide space for uploads if we're going to be able to post images on the board. Be sure that other free image hosts will follow Photobucket pretty soon. Yes that is the problem, with Photobucket charging the other popular sites will start to see increased traffic and their costs will rise! Oh well I suppose it was inevitable. Big blow for me as I did get enjoyment both viewing and posting many pictures over the years. |

I very much doubt that SETI will provide a photo hosting service :-( I know it's been discussed on a number of occasions, but the disk space required is "stupid". One solution is to find a REALLY CHEAP hosting company and set up the world's simplest website, which takes just a few minutes to do. Set up a folder the photos you are "going to use on your website when you find the tuit". Upload your photos into that folder and use the direct URLs from there. There is an advantage to this - you should be able to get your own personal email address as well, something like "joe@soap.me", and your web address as www.soap.me . I think such services cost about £10 PER YEAR... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

You can copy and paste in word processors, why do bulletin boards not allow that? Some forums do allow uploading of pictures, but again, you are usually limited to picture size. This is due to pictures taking up space and bandwidth and this is part of the problem, When you view a picture on SETI@Home linked to Photobucket the bandwidth comes from Photobucket. To allow pictures here at SETI they would have to increase storage (I wonder how many actual pictures there are linked on here??) And also they would see the corresponding rise in bandwidth usage which may or may not be a problem. Not sure what the answer is. |

Using URL links still works but you have to click it to show the image. http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/BERNIEV/media/cGF0aDovc3Vuc2V0LTAxLmpwZw==/?ref= |

Using URL links still works but you have to click it to show the image. Which is exactly the heart of the matter. With a hotlink as soon a you open the thread with the picture in it is displayed, so if you open the "pictures" thread then all the Photobucket pictures appear. So if say there were 100 pictures in the thread and it is opened 50 times in a day, that is 5,000 links established to Photobucket. However if you just used the URL then it would only be the number of people who actually clicked on the link, probably a lot fewer. So URL's cost Photobucket a lot less in bandwidth than hot links. |

I see that greed has finally gotten the upper hand at Photobucket. I have been complaining about them for quite some time already when trying to use Photobucket to post a pic in the caption contest. The flippin' pushed ad content took up more bandwidth than storing and accessing a picture, so the site was dang near unusable for me. Log on, and an endless stream of ads brought my computer to a slow grind. I can understand the need for the site to be for-profit, but methinks they have gone too far with this move. Have not tried yet, but is it possible to download your library from Photobucket back to your computer? There are a few old kitty pics I have there that were since lost on this end due to hard drive crashes. It would be nice if I could recover them before they go down in the flames that they deserve. Before Photobucket sees a lot of download activity by people jumping ship and they disable that option as well. Meow. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |
