Message 2017092 - Posted: 29 Oct 2019, 9:15:11 UTC - in response to Message 2017090.

At this stage in the proceedings, that feels like knife crime - it's like blaming the pilots for the 737 Max crashes.

The LFB were faced - in the middle of the night - with a building that was burning in a totally unexpected way, contrary to all design standards and all their training. How many of us would have come up smelling of roses under those circumstances?

The current online BBC report says

The BBC has seen sections of the report ahead of Wednesday's publication.
BBC broadcast says that they've seen the conclusions. Let's see how Moore-Bick has covered the remaining design issues, unchanged on the night: the single narrow staircase required for both fire-fighting access and evacuation. The full version of this stage 1 report (into events on the night only) isn't published until tomorrow. And the really important one - into how we got into this sorry mess in the first place - isn't due for another couple of years.

Let's hope he's just practising his knife skills, ready to use them on the politicians and builders next time.

Looking through the newspaper front pages, only the Torygraph even mentions the Grenfell report. And it, like here, concentrates on blaming the poor bloody infantry who had to clear up the consequences.

That feels like diverting the blame from their friends who caused the catastrophe.

with a building that was burning in a totally unexpected way

And that is the issue. Expecting a specific fire and only training for that specific fire.

Not directly connected to Grenfell, but there have been many fires caused by electrical kitchen appliances in tower blocks.

Have just finished reading the report. What stands out for me is 2.16 of the executive summary.
Compliance with the Building Regulations
2.16 It was not my original intention to include in Phase 1 of the Inquiry an investigation into the
extent to which the building complied with the requirements of the Building Regulations.
However, as I have explained in Chapter 26, there was compelling evidence that the external
walls of the building failed to comply with Requirement B4(1) of Schedule 1 to the Building
Regulations 2010, in that they did not adequately resist the spread of fire having regard to
the height, use and position of the building.
On the contrary, they actively promoted it. It will
be necessary in Phase 2 to examine why those who were responsible for the design of the
refurbishment considered that the tower would meet that essential requirement.

Bolton flats blaze: Students 'confused as alarms go off daily'
A row has broken out over the reliability of fire alarms after a blaze forced the evacuation of hundreds of students.

Residents fled The Cube in Bolton when the building was hit by Friday's fire, which was tackled by up to 200 firefighters for more than nine hours.

The fire... really did spread very quickly and that was evident to see on the footage that's on social media.
He said an investigation had been launched into the blaze and confirmed the "cladding on this building was not the same as that on Grenfell".
So what made it spread so fast?

This is not how any building should react to a fire in the 21st century, let alone a building in which people live," he said.
"It's time for a complete overhaul of UK fire safety before it's too late."
Good luck with that!

Les Skarratts, of the FBU in the north-west, said there would be "hard lessons to learn as the circumstances become clearer in the coming days".
Hmm, where have we heard that before?
