This is despite having, historically, some very good (national) fire safety standards, such as NFF16-101, NFF16-102, DIN5510, BS5839. In some industries there are some very good, and effective, EuroNorms that have drawn on the "best existing" standards, but it would appear that the building industry has decided to go for the "lowest level possible", which has resulted in today's status - not even "status-quo", but "status-mud", by allowing (encouraging) inappropriate extrapolation and scaling of data from very small scale tests to very large buildings. I would hope to see within the EU attempts to redress this balance towards safer buildings that are thermally efficient (something that some material manufacturers will fight against as it will hit their bottom line.)

It seems that Grenfell was the spark that now forces others to speak out. Unfortunately, in today's society it is a case of profits talk, safety walks.

Ah but the K&CTMO passed the onus to LFB the 1st week. It's just a "round-robin".

"CE" like "UL"? There is a part that got UL approval a long time ago that everyone now agrees causes fires. It's approved. That can't ever change. So newbies think it is a good part and specify it.

What is it you ask? A strain relief for a power cord. Good idea, bad design. Takes time but it causes internal damage to the power cord.

"Dame Janet made several clear recommendations for change in public policy covering areas such as death certificates and drugs monitoring.
But then politics came back into play and the government had to decide how far it would respond.
Ministers came and went, and three different departments were involved.
"It was hopeless, like herding cats," Dame Janet recalled.
Limited implementation of her recommendations after so much work was "a great disappointment"."

Can public inquiries satisfy everyone

No, not when it's government led & they decide how far to proceed.

One hazard of these events is that there will be too many recommendations. A few of well aimed recommendations have been shown to have far more impact on policy than several hundred "tiny detail" ones that bounce of policy makers like buckshot off armour plate.

As far as the reports from the PI goes I would like to see two - a technical report into the "mechanics" of the fire, and a "human" one going into all the other stuff. The former shouldn't take too long, and needs to be out in the wild urgently so other organisations (councils, land lords, builder, architects etc) can start to learn the physical lessons and get the solutions in place ASAP. The second will take longer as its scope is so much bigger and more emotional and emotive in both evidence and conclusion.

Grenfell management to be removed
So, who will have the responsibility going forward - the article doesn't say, but it's the first question I'd have asked if I was a reporter at the meeting.

In the absence of a specific statement, I assume it reverts immediately to the elected councillors of Kensington & Chelsea Borough Council. Which doesn't inspire me with a lot of confidence.

Who will promptly delegate the authority to the un-elected council (executive) staff - who inspire me with even less confidence.

My apologies in advance if anyone is disturbed by the following report. It is relevant to the thread as it is a response to some reckless comments regarding competency. It also highlights something that the media in its wisdom fails to realise: Regarding education, experience, professionalism, & major improvements in techniques & technology, a serious flaw still exists & that is - we are all human & not perfect, something will always occur that takes us to the limits & either time will resolve them or they remain unsolved.

On this side of the pond, not only is it compulsory for more than a decade, there is a website with every score, and it covers more than just food places.

Thank you. I read most links.

Impressive with over 500 inspections in two days. Your LA County has more people and is 1/12 the size of my state of Washington.

Now I gotta see if my little podunk county has anything public like that. Sanitary places to eat are a plus. har

Sanitary places are a plus. If you podunk doesn't have it pitch a bitch and demand they do. It is amazing how much better places are when they can't hide their filth.

They, LA, need more inspectors. Some places aren't getting randomly inspected as frequently as they should be. IIRC they want to get to all of them at least three times a year, but they are getting them only once a year or on specific complaint. They also made complaints easy, file online not just by phone.

Had the pleasure of sitting next to an inspector once while they wrote up the report. The general advice was to eat at big chain places because they had good training for the employees and the resources to fix stuff quickly if it was broken. The monkey wrench could be franchise operations where the franchise does the training and not corporate. In any case they said they would never eat off a food truck, or at a celebrity chef place, most are filthy and barely pass.

"Council planning official Raymond Barlow told MSPs that cladding had been found on some buildings in Glasgow, but said "it's not public information yet"."
It is now.
