I can't get the latest version of BOINC to build, so I've downloaded binaries from this page: http://www.lb.shuttle.de/apastron/boincDown.shtml#sparc The client runs and I can connect to it with boincmgr from another computer. I can also see the computer in the list of my computers. However, the client just reports "No work from project" and doesn't download any tasks. The SETI@home version is 5.4.9 and judging by the site I downloaded it from is at least 10 years old. Will it still work or do I need to figure out how to fix the BOINC source to get a more modern version built? |

SETI@Home version 5.x was withdrawn from service quite a few years ago, and the servers will not send any tasks to it. You need to find the source for version 8.x Also, BOINC and SETI@Home are not the same, and each has its own version control - please confirm which you are talking about, as it is important.... Thanks for the reply. I've been trying to get the latest git version of BOINC and seti@home from svn compiled on the Solaris machine for most of today and I've pretty much given up, I don't have any more time to give to it for the next couple of weeks. I think a large part of the problem is the build environment I have set up with packages from opencsw.org. I'll try again in a couple of weeks and post my results. |

So I thought I'd report back. I finally managed to get the git version of boinc compiled on my Ultra 60 running Solaris 10, using gcc 5 and a bunch of libraries and utilities from opencsw.org. I had to make a couple of edits to the code (changing a pair() to a make_pair() and commenting out a section). I then got the seti client compiled via trial and error, basically running make, seeing where it failed and then trying first to edit the code to make it build and then by commenting out the sections that failed, hoping that the app would still be functional when built. Its a pretty slow computer by todays standards (see below) so this process of trial and error took a really long time, but I finally got it compiled. Boinc crashed the first time I ran it because it failed to make some config files, but when I created blank files for it and then restarted it ran fine. After configuring boinc and seti as an anonymous platform I started crunching 10 days ago. The first workunit finished processing and uploaded a few minutes ago! Since the machine has been drawing a touch over 200W this whole time I think its probably time to power it down. I'm glad I successfully got it up and running though. Here's a link to the seti computer page, you can see for yourself how slow it is! For reference this machine has dual 450MHz UltraSparc II processors and 1792MB RAM. 20 years ago it would have been a beast, now it needs to be retired. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu//show_host_detail.php?hostid=8287908 |
