Ebola kills 3 in DRC, WHO says; scores more linked to deaths

(CNN)Three people have died from an Ebola outbreak in a remote northern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as health officials travel to the central African country in response to a rising number of suspected cases, the World Health Organization says.
Last week, WHO reported one Ebola-related death and the possibility of two others. On Saturday, the organization confirmed the other two deaths were also Ebola-related.
The first case, which came April 22, involved a 45-year-old man. The taxi driver who took the man to the hospital and a person who cared for the man both became sick and later died, WHO said.

Frozen burritos maker relocates after recall, listeria scare

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico company that recalled more than 252,000 pounds of frozen burritos because of possible listeria contamination says it’s relocating.

Green Chile Concepts LLC said it will start making food products at its new manufacturing plant starting Monday in a long-planned move.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Saturday announced the Green Chile Food Company recall for various frozen burritos containing meat and poultry, after a routine sample of a beef and potato burrito found a problem.

The Las Cruces, New Mexico-based company voluntarily recalled the burritos, which have been sold frozen, refrigerated or served hot at convenience stores, vending machines and stores through distributors in California, Illinois, Oregon and South Dakota.

There have been no reports of people getting sick. Listeria can cause serious illness and even death.

Yemen war: Emergency in Sanaa as cholera kills scores

A state of emergency has been declared in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, after an outbreak of cholera killed scores of people.

Hospitals in the city, which is controlled by Houthi rebels, are crowded with cholera patients.

The Red Cross says the number of suspected cases in the country has tripled in a week to more than 8,500.

Yemen has been ravaged by hunger and civil war, allowing disease to spread rapidly.

Two-thirds of the population do not have access to safe drinking water, according to the UN.

Very sad. :(

WHO notes 19 suspected Ebola cases in the DRC

Today the World Health Organization (WHO) said there were an additional 2 new cases of suspected Ebola virus disease in a remote northern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This raised the total number of cases to 19, with 3 deaths likely caused by the deadly disease.

In a situation report, the WHO's African regional office provided more details on the presumed index patient: a 39-year-old man who died en route to the Likati Health Center on Apr 22. His motorcycle taxi driver subsequently died on Apr 26 after developing Ebola symptoms on Apr 24.

As of yesterday, the WHO said the case-fatality rate is 15.8%. The cases reported are from three areas in northern DRC: Nambwa (10 cases and 2 deaths), Mouma (3 cases and 1 death), and Ngay (6 cases and no death). A total of 125 contacts of the 19 suspected cases have been identified and are being followed daily. The external report said there are six patients currently hospitalized, and that WHO and local health officials were working to disinfect materials and homes of patients and put in place safe burial practices.

Where are the vaccines?

Ebola Is Back. Here Are the Challenges Ahead

An outbreak of Ebola has emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and hundreds could be affected, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed. The risk assessment is high at a national level, medium at a regional level and currently low at a global level, said Peter Salama, WHO's executive director for health emergencies, during a telephone briefing.

California botulism outbreak tied to gas station nacho cheese sauce

California health inspectors have linked last week's botulism outbreak -- a rare and sometimes fatal form of food poisoning -- to a nacho cheese sauce traced back to a mom-and-pop gas station in Walnut Grove, CBS Sacramento reports.

Outside, Valley Oak Food and Fuel is open for business, but inside, health officials have stopped the sale of food items and roped off a part of the store.

State and county health officials have confirmed nine people have been hospitalized, including possibly a 16-year-old. Five cases were first reported on May 5. This week four more people have become sick. A tenth person is being tested after showing similar symptoms related to the rare and potentially fatal illness.

'Kissing bug' disease more deadly than thought

(CNN)The nickname given to the insects that spread Chagas disease is somewhat bittersweet: kissing bugs.
Their name stems from the fact that they like biting humans around their lips and faces as they sleep, after which they defecate into the wound with feces that harbor an infectious parasite, Trypanasoma cruzi.
The parasite then enters the bloodstream and causes Chagas disease, also known as trypanosomiasis.

Yuk :(

WHO Optimistic on Controlling DRC Ebola Outbreak

GENEVA —

The World Health Organization’s regional chief for Africa reports prospects for rapidly controlling the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo are good.

While not underestimating the difficulties that lie ahead in bringing this latest outbreak of Ebola to an end, Matshidiso Moeti told VOA she is “very encouraged” by the speed with which the government and its national and international partners have responded to this crisis.

- Multiresistant bacteria are called a little populist for super bacteria. These include MRSA, ESBL, VRE and PNSP.
These bacteria resist basically all kinds of antibiotics, they survive a treatment and can then multiply.
- Normally, if you are healthy, the bacteria are kept in check by the immune system and the natural intestinal flora. But if you get sick, a banal infection can be fatal.

In recent years antibiotic resistant bacteria have increased rapidly, especially in southern Europe.

I wonder why Switzerland and many states in the Balkans doesn't report any cases of MRSA bacterias?
I do think WHO works in those countries too.

Ebola outbreak may be smaller than feared, WHO indicates

There are signs that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo may not be as big as was once feared, World Health Organization officials indicated Thursday.

Fourteen suspected cases have tested negative for the deadly virus, Alison Clement, a WHO spokeswoman currently in Likati, the epicenter of the response, told STAT in an interview.

So far there have been two confirmed cases, four probable cases, and four deaths. Another 40 people are currently listed as suspected cases, said Clement. Roughly 300 people who are contacts of known or suspected cases are being monitored to see if they develop symptoms.

Congo approves use of Ebola vaccine to fight outbreak

Democratic Republic of Congo's health ministry has approved the use of a new Ebola vaccine to counter an outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in its northeast that has killed four people, a spokesman said on Monday.

"The non-objection was given. Now there's a Medecins Sans Frontiers team that is arriving [in Congo] today to validate the protocol with the technical teams," Jonathan Simba, a health ministry spokesman, said by telephone.

The experimental vaccine, known as rVSV-ZEBOV, was partially designed by the Canadian government and is being developed by the U.S.-based Merck & Co. It is not yet licensed but was shown to be highly protective against Ebola in clinical trials published last December.

Ultra-tough antibiotic to fight superbugs

US scientists have re-engineered a vital antibiotic in a bid to wipe out one of the world's most threatening superbugs.

Their new version of vancomycin is designed to be ultra-tough and appears to be a thousand times more potent than the old drug, PNAS journal reports.

It fights bacteria in three different ways, making it much less likely that the bugs can dodge the attack.

It is yet to be tested in animals and people, however.

The Scripps Research Institute team hope the drug will be ready for use within five years if it passes more tests.

Zika is More than Microcephaly

In the months before the Rio Olympics, the news was non-stop: the Zika virus was lurking in Brazil, threatening to send the world’s top athletes back to their home countries to spread the infection. While the impact of the Olympics on the spread of the virus was not as severe as expected, by the end of the year infected individuals with travel-associated disease were in every U.S. state except Alaska.

Contaminated Measles Vaccine Kills 15 Kids in South Sudan

JUBA, South Sudan -- Fifteen young children have died in a botched measles vaccination campaign that saw people as young as 12 years old administering the vaccines, South Sudan's government announced Friday.

The United Nations said the children died of "severe sepsis/toxicity" from the contaminated vaccine, and the health ministry blamed the deaths on human error. One syringe was used for all the children during the four-day campaign, and the vaccine was stored without refrigeration the entire time.

Ebola epidemic in Congo 'under control': health minister

Democratic Republic of Congo has not recorded a new case of Ebola in the last 21 days, the maximum incubation period for the disease, and is now in a phase of heightened surveillance, the health minister said on Friday.

"At this stage, we can say that the spread of the epidemic has been brought under control, and that's thanks to the quality of national and international experts dispatched to the zone," Oly Ilunga Kalenga told reporters in the capital Kinshasa.

Christie nearing settlement in nurse’s Ebola quarantine

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is nearing a settlement in a lawsuit filed by a nurse who was quarantined in 2014 after working in Sierra Leone during the deadly Ebola outbreak, according to court documents.

Attorneys representing Christie said in a letter last week to District Judge James Clark that the governor reached the agreement to settle “in principle” with Kaci Hickox.

The letter did not include details, and the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents Hickox, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.
