Could not open the file /home/bbates121/Download…x86_64-pc-linux-gnu(2).sh using the Unicode (UTF-8) character encoding or Western (ISO-8859-15). Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a different character encoding from the menu and try again. Anyone have any ideas way I cannot get it installed? |

First make sure it has execution permission... right click, Properties, Permissions tab and check "Allow executing..." (this is in Cinnamon; if you have a different desktop these may be different.) You can do this and launch via command line... right-click in the folder it is in and choose to open a command prompt there. Then do the commands: chmod +x Whateverx86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh ./Whateverx86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh You can of course copy the filename and right-click -> Paste in the command window to avoid typing it. Hope this helps! |

I have a control panel but no Properties or Permission. Even did a search on the start menu and it did not find any of them. An other ideas on anything I can find on this system? |

You will get to the file by going into Computer on the desktop and then Home on the left panel. If you are unsure where it is in Home you can click the magnifying glass icon at the top-right and search for it (a piece of the file name is enough.) Again, I'm assuming your desktop environment is Cinnamon. If not please advise. |

I found the permissions on the folder it self not on the system. Is this what you meant? How ever I did not find allow executing. when I tried running your command I got the following. chmod: cannot access 'Whateverx86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh': No such file or directory |

I found the app permission on the .sh file not on the folder. Selected it and this is the error I am getting. chmod: cannot access 'Whateverx86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh': No such file or directory bbates121@REB-OptiPlex-755 ~/Downloads/BOINC $ Whateverx86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh Whateverx86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh: command not found bbates121@REB-OptiPlex-755 ~/Downloads/BOINC $ |

I found BONIC in the Software Manager and it was a lot easier to install and run. |
