. . Hi Guys,

. . I am developing a hate/hate relationship with these &(*&( Seti servers.

. . Four rigs, the others are getting work more or less AOK now, but this one rig cannot get any GPU work from the rotten bloody servers. They will fill the CPU queue to the limit. But for the GPU queue? Nada! Zilch! Not a skerick.

. . I have tried changing to the same location as the other (Linux) rigs that are getting work well and still nothing. Yet despite the fact that one other rig is on the same location setting as this one normally is that one IS getting work. Windows won't let me edit the hosts file anymore (well I can edit it but I cannot save the edit), but otherwise the 2 Window rigs are the same.

. . Some days I really, really hate computers.

[edit] OK! Grant is right, there is some kind of mystical connection between the servers/scheduler and this forum. All morning nothing I tried would download new work. I came in here to write that message and while my back was turned the servers downloaded a queue full of work. I think I can understand how sometimes people go bat&(96 crazy :(

I would think that this is due to the Arecibo work recently for about the past week being about >95% VLARs. The scheduler will not send them out as GPU work. So if the GUPPI splitter happens to be out of work at the same time, only your CPUs will get anything.

The problem is, when it's really misbehaving, even if you only request CPU work, it still won't give you any, even if you've only got 25 WUs of your 100WU server side limit.

Since the weekly outage, GBT work has started to flow again, and requests for work (almost) always result in getting some when reporting completed work. First time for a while.

That's been my experience also. Only mystery for me right now is why one machine has only been able to get 1/5 of the AP tasks the other machines have accumulated so far.

Looking at stats I noticed the 'Top Computer' has an error rate of ~ 10%.........the rating scale apparently has no measurement for accuracy/efficiency.........

AFAIK that machine is being used to develop a new app which shows much promise.

Anyone getting any GBT work?
For a few hours now both of my system have been Arecibo only, apart from about 3 stray GBT WUs.

I haven't seen any since 6:15 GMT

I got a batch of resends, so I checked the server cache delay ... it's 8h10m ... it's usually about 4.5h !!!

Yeah, just picked up about a dozen between both systems. Still, very low GBT to Arecibo ratio.

Plenty of GBT work here in my mix, there were a pile of AP's here too (but they're dwindling fast).

Cheers.

Have been using only CPUs lately but wanted to try and use the GPU to comparison reasons....but although my settings are right...I also get nothing on the GPU side...

. . My windows boxes are only getting Arecibo VLARs, nothing else and the 970s are slowly grinding their way through them (taking 28mins each) because there is nothing else for them to crunch and the CPU is busy crunching V8.07 for Beta.

. . NOT HAPPY JAN!

It is the way it is mate. You either live with it or you don't. I only partially live with it these days as my choice. You have to make yours.

. . True! But I am loathe to walk away from the project. (More fool me maybe).

With WIndows 10, you need to edit the file as an Admin (run notepad as Administrator) in order to save the file.

No, not fool you nor me either, not in any way, and I'm not walking away either. But it is time to say publicly that if Seti can't or won't give me work., then I will go elsewhere until they can. And where I go is helping running the Seti backend anyway, so that is also supporting the project. I'm refusing to lose any sleep over it, It is their problem not mine, my conscience is clear. Over nearly 17 years I have done my bit, more than most in fact, and if they start a major fundraising exercise for new kit I will be amongst the first to contribute to it.

But in the meantime Seti is not a sacred cow to be worshipped. I can afford to run the computing kit that I do as a hobby and as such I will use those facilities to the best advantage rather than save a few pennies on electricity that would earn me almost zero interest in the bank anyway. What's wrong with helping to find a cure for cancer as well as looking for ET?

. . That's the thing about BOINC, most if not all the studies being conducted through it are worthwhile pursuits of answers that can benefit all of us quite a lot. So anyone can choose whatever project they like and feel good about it.

I haven't received any BLC tasks in about 8 hrs. So your observation about the server cache delay is making sense to me. They were splitting out BLC tasks for a while into the RTS buffer, then that stopped and then the RTS buffer filled up with Arecibo VLARs. It seems that the RTS buffer gets padded with either/or slugs of BLC or Arecibo tasks sequentially. There is no intermixing.

Sounds like Windows (or other program) has made the file attribute READ-ONLY. Have seen this happen on some Win 7 & 8.x boxes I have worked on.
Try this:
1) Open a Command prompt as an ADMINISTRATOR and CHANGE THE ATTRIBUTE of the file ...
2) At cmd prompt type (without quotes): "attrib -h -s -r C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"
3) Exit cmd prompt.
4) Open the hosts file with notepad as an ADMINISTRATOR, make edit and save. Exit Notepad.
Hope this works.
