Calling the Moon: Startup to Put Cellphone Tower on the Moon

An astronaut wandering the moon next year could use a smartphone to call home. A German startup is preparing to set up the first telecommunication infrastructure on the lunar surface.

The German company Part Time Scientists, which originally competed for the Google Lunar X Prize race to the moon, plans to send a lander with a rover in late 2018 to visit the landing site of Apollo 17. (Launched in 1972, this was NASA's final Apollo mission to the moon.) Instead of using a complex dedicated telecommunication system to relay data from the rover to the Earth, the company will rely on LTE technology — the same system used on Earth for mobile phone communications.

"We are cooperating with Vodafone in order to provide LTE base stations on the moon," Karsten Becker, who heads embedded electronics development and integration for the startup, told Space.com.

"What we are aiming to do is to provide commercial service to bring goods to the moon and also to provide services on the surface of the moon," Becker added.

Accused burglar doesn't flush toilet, leaves DNA for police

VENTURA, California - A man accused of burglarizing a Southern California home took a bathroom break and left DNA evidence in the toilet that led to his arrest, an investigator said Tuesday.

The suspect "did his business and didn't flush it" during the October break-in in the city of Thousand Oaks, said Detective Tim Lohman of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

That allowed investigators to collect evidence to conduct a DNA profile. It matched another profile in a national database and detectives tracked down the suspect at his home in the nearby city of Ventura.

This burglar had no one of his better days. The break-in to the villa in Tygelsjö in Malmö went on as planned.
The window was easy to break in to and inside the villa there were two modern computers.
The thief or thieves disappeared from the site with the theft, but an important personal belonging was forgotten in the villa.
Not only that the thieves had lost a wallet with a bigger sum of money - in the wallet, there was also an ID card that the police believed belong to the thief.
The police do not want to tell you how much money was left in the wallet, but the sum equals about the value of the stolen computers.

... According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the couple came up with the idea to send a letter, on Sheriff’s Office letterhead, to Reddy Ice so that Sullivan might keep his job while away.

“Here's a bit of advice - if you're going to try to dupe someone into thinking you're working with law enforcement, you should probably use a real name and maybe not have misspelled words,” said Sheriff Grady Judd.

The upshot is you can't use the builtin keypad on the devices to unlock the door.

Earlier this week, though, new software was automatically sent out to folks' $469 Lockstate 6000i locks – one of the upstart's top residential smart locks – which left the keypad entirely useless. The crashed locks – which connect to your home Wi-Fi for remote control and monitoring as well as firmware updates – are now going to be out of action for at least a week.

I also have internet video of the front and patio doors. I have the live stream recorded in my office on a continuous 45 day loop.

I have one, not that brand. The door cannot be unlocked via internet but I can lock it if I forget to. It also let me know if someone does attempt to enter or tamper with the lock. Well one of these days, I'll be installing another Master Lock deadbolt and locking knob set, I have one on My front door that has a metal skin and a wooden core, the door is temp sensitive, when it's hot out, it's easy to lock and unlock, otherwise it's pull on the knob to lock and unlock or the key could or will twist off, yeah the door needs to be replaced, Home Depot once gave Me an estimate of $2500 to replace the exterior door. The local locksmith says they are the best locks around.

Vic do a little research about lock sets. Don't trust local lock smith who may have one brand that he sells. I have built over 1,200 housing units. That range from $750,000 homes to apartments and manufactures homes (trailers). High end get Baldwin, Medium Schlage, low end Quick-set. Master Lock is sold at Walmart. They make some higher end stuff but they also make junk. I frankly don't trust Master Lock. I can open them with the just a bump.

He didn't sell Me the locks, I bought the locks off of Amazon, He did say they had less parts than the broken one that took 59mins to replace. The battery in My car is from Walmart.

I doubt anyone, you included Carlos, can open My front door with just a bump.

My main worry right now is when "Yes Energy Management" will deliver the rent bills for August, they're late, We used to get the bills on or before the end of the previous month, in July the bill came on July 5th, now the August bill is 14 days late, the bill includes payments for trash, water, gas, and electricity, yeah I called them, they are going to call Me back in about 40mins. I'm sure the park owner is not happy, I saw His car out here. Though I have not talked to the manager here on this issue, yet.

I don't quite get the point. Are they planning to use the LTE for their rover to communicate with a base station, which will relay the signals to Earth? Are they going to send a whole fleet of rovers? Or are they expecting someone to suddenly build a colony there?

Lovely, just lovely. Credit card fraud strikes again.

This morning, I downloaded my usual accounts into Quicken and a charge came through for Bloomingdales.com. I've never bought anything from them in my life, or even been a store. I went to the bank's web site and found two pending charges to Homedepot.com. I've never bought anything online from them and haven't been in a store in months, maybe over a year.

So, I clicked the link to dispute the transaction. It opened up a whole list of reasons for my dispute. I clicked "I didn't make this charge" and it said for that I have to call in. I called the number and the automated system asked me for the last four digits of my card and for the number listed on the transaction. Then it said I could stay on hold or it would call me back when a rep was available in 48 minutes to 1 hour and 16 minutes. I chose the callback. When it came in about an hour, the computer asked me more questions and then connected me to a person, who asked a lot more questions to verify my identity. I finally told her what the problem was and she said for that she had to transfer me to a different department. I'd already told the computer what my problem was; WHY DID IT CONNECT ME TO SOMEONE WHO COULDN'T HANDLE IT??!!!

After several minutes of annoying hold music, I got another person, who had to verify me again. Then she said someone had obviously gotten ahold of my card number and they would have to issue me a new one. You just missed the cutoff for it to be mailed tonight, but it will go out tomorrow and you'll get it Wednesday. AAAARRRRRGGHH!!! IF I HADN'T HAD TO WAIT AN HOUR FOR THE CALLBACK AND THEN SPENT ANOTHER 20+ MINUTES TALKING TO THE WRONG PERSON AND WAITING FOR THE RIGHT PERSON, MAYBE I WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED THE CUTOFF!!

Now I have at least five web sites I have to visit to update automated or semi-automated billing after I get the new card but before they come due again, plus two banks I use to send payments to that card.

And to top it off, as I was typing this an ice cream truck went by playing Turkey in the Straw at me.

David that is why I mostly use cash for my local purchases. The way I see it the fewer businesses have my numbers the smaller target I am.
