A few years ago I read an article about some Canadians who were developing a test for DUI suspects that test a person's ability to function and safely drive autos without breath or blood analyzing. It measured your skill level, not whether there is drugs or alcohol detected.

I'm trying to find it with no luck so far.

Drugs aren't the only thing that impairs. They allow you to drive on virus, fever or bacteria. Not smart, but legal.

Ouch! "forced retirement" after 20 years service. Sorry to hear that. No cheer as you say.

My hat is off to you for keeping your sanity after 20 years of big pharma. Great job. I've had a couple reconstruction surgeries that took months to heal. The bone work took years to never. har... I hated taking the stuff. I can't imagine doing it for years. I'd be in the rubber room.

Plus just look at what is going on here with big pharma pain drugs epidemic.

As to driving and or out in public, don't be stupid. Simple. Now force DUI testing with out cause at DUI check points is another thing.

We've had the lick test here for several years now, you're either negative or positive, the later gets a mouth swab for testing, if you fail that you get put off the road for 24hrs and then await the results from the lab which comes in the form of court attendance papers.

Cheers.

Not counting letting those folks go to work, the market, church and schools and spread their joy, just to name a few. Cruise ships, my favorite. Sorry I drift. har...

Thankfully we don't have "big pharma" or "big medical" here either, that's why we're called a "Social Democracy", but you also do have the option to go the "big" way if you wish (after you get through all the red tape or the O.S. costs). ;-)

Cheers.

Are you tested for just cause (you did something stupid, long list of things here) or is every one forced to be tested without just cause say at a DUI checkpoints? To be honest I'm not sure what they do here. I know if the LEO smell either you are tested for just cause. I'll have to look that up now. har...

Over here any police vehicle can be a random mobile alcohol and drug testing unit, but they do checkpoint style too.

Cheers.

Although I personally dislike Police Checkpoints when there is no specific reason, IE: A fleeing felon.

The legal reasoning in the USA is that driving is a privilege, not a right.

Actually I thought the legal reasoning was that there are highway men about and you are not secure in you papers on the road, going back to stage coach robbers and the conditions at the time of adoption.

‘Streamlined’ process to create better medicinal cannabis access.

Australians will soon have better access to unregistered medicinal cannabis.

A proposal was made at the COAG Health Council meeting on Friday for streamlined access, with the state government agreeing to collaborate with other states, territories, and the Commonwealth.

A nationally consistent online application pathway would be created for the application and approval processes for unregistered medicinal cannabis products.

The process would avoid the doubling of decisions of clinical appropriateness, while maintaining the separate approvals by states and territories necessary in managing appropriate access to drugs of addiction.
Cheers.

Legalising cannabis adds $3.6bn to Australian economy, budget office says.

Legalising cannabis would reap the Australian economy almost $2bn a year, the Parliamentary Budget Office has found.

The Greens plan to not only decriminalise cannabis but also legalise it for adult use is the latest case study of political differences, with both Labor and the Coalition looking into legalising it for medicinal use, but going no further.

But claiming that the “war on drugs had failed”, the Greens leader, Richard Di Natale, last week proposed the full legalisation of cannabis, which would allow adults to grow up to six marijuana plants for personal use.
Cheers.

The Prohibition of marijuana, as the Prohibition of alcohol was, is totally ridiculous.

On this we agree

As all prohibitions are. If someone can make, grow, acquire, trade, enjoy it, they will. Better to allow it and regulate it and tax it.

https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2018/09/14/States-watching-Illinois-use-of-marijuana-to-fight-opioid-crisis/3711536870575/
EVANSVILLE, Ind., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The Illinois legislature has become the first state to give doctors the ability to prescribe marijuana instead of opiates in an effort to fight the opioid epidemic, with other states looking to follow.

A small but growing body of research suggests that access to medical marijuana reduces opioid use -- and therefore opioid addiction. The effect is so drastic that some policy experts say it may be an effective tool to combat the country's growing opioid crisis.

"If you look at states that allow medical cannabis, there are fewer people dying from opioid overdoses," said Chris Lindsey, the senior legal counsel for the Marijuana Policy Project. "And it's a significant number."

A 2014 study by the University of Pennsylvania found that states such as California and Oregon, where patients could use medical marijuana legally, had 25 percent fewer opioid overdose deaths between 1999 and 2010 than states that didn't. More recent studies indicate that patients who are prescribed marijuana need fewer opiates to regulate pain.
