His initial post was to reinforce the current forum rules No his post was to explain that SETI@Home has no influence over decisions made by UCB, so could people please stop sending him PM's and other communications threatening him if he did not do something about. I believe he invited people to post their feeling in politics, where he reminded them of the rules. Well that was how I read it. |

Personally I don't give a monkeys about the politics surrounding Berkely or anywhere else for that matter. I joined Seti@home to try and help you hear that message from ET just in case he, she or even it, is trying to get in touch. I only joined in February of this year after watching UFO programs on the TV which mentioned the Seti@home project and I thought I would like to try and help. I haven't even set up a full profile yet or joined any groups and this is my very first forum post. Hear, Hear (this is also my first post) |

Spot on Chris, basically its a refresher on the forum rules. Majority of this thread should be under a topic of same in Politics forum. Meanwhile, crunching away, and that's what we are all here for. Regards |

I probably havent been on internet as long as a lot of people here. I first got my slow 300/300 dial up connection in late 1990 but before that for many years I was in the world of Fido BBS's going back to 1983. One thing I learned, in all that time still stands today: DONT FEED THE TROLLS! If you continue to get upset and show it, they get their daily feed. Use the quote "I am a rock, I am an island" or simply ignore them if you can. Either way, your life is better, they waste energy and dont get fed and in the long run, they tend to dry up and go away. I have also not been doing Seti packets as long as some. I think I started in June 1997 so only just about 20 years. However, as my computers change, one of the first things I do is to install Seti@Home and then connect to the Seti project and continue packet processing. I like doing it. I like remaining anonymous doing it and I like to think that even if a signal is discovered by someone else some day, I did my part my processing things that needed to be processed ruling out this or that so that other person finds the right signal. To all who want to destroy this, I have observed that wherever enough people gather, someone thinks there is a place to gather notice or power. I doubt this place is either of those things. Go find a life in politics. Trump proved that anyone can do it. That is where the power is. However, leave us small people to our small joys. Greg. |

My only involvement in SETI is that I allow my computer to crunch numbers for the SETI program. The BOINC Manager brought this "free speech" post to my attention. I was under the impression that SETI was an acronym for "Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence". Reading this thread makes me wonder if there is any "Terrestrial Intelligence". If Extra-Terrestrials look for signs of "intelligence" on Earth, they will not find it as long as this kind of nonsense continues. I was also under the impression that a university was an institution of higher learning. Why people use it for a political battleground, complete with property damage and personal injury, is a complete mystery to me. If someone reads that to mean that I think everyone on one side of the issue is a right wing white supremacist and everyone on the other is a left wing anarchist they need to head back to middle school for some reading comprehension lessons. +100 There lies the biggest "bugbear" of many issues today. The Internet makes it more visible. |

Eric, I don't know why anyone has to "riot"! What ever happened to peaceful protests and conversations? And, why in the world, would anyone attack you or Seti@home, for crying out loud! We're all just participating in order to search for life outside our own world! Bless you and your team for allowing us mere mortals to join the ranks of SETI! I believe that the Chancellor is attempting to broaden the experience of the students and challenge them to REALLY think about what they believe in so that when they leave the University they will not be necessarily tied to one belief system. "Liberal Fascism" is a contradiction in terms and should no be used to belittle someone's expressed views. |

I must point out that point 4 is patently false. 4. Thou shalt not force others to pay for the delivery of or the consequences of speech they may not agree with. We all pay taxes which fund educational institutions and governments who say and do things we don't agree with each and every day. We pay for the speech, its delivery and its consequences and we are "forced" by virtue of governments and taxation to shoulder this burden. I have some examples for you. Personally, I don't know anyone who cares about fruit flies or their mating practices, yet tax dollars fund research on it and have been since I was a child some 5 decades ago. There are papers published by researchers and in some cases symposiums held, most of which are funded by tax dollars. Someone somewhere decided this was a good thing and we all are forced to pay for it. During World War II the DOD funded (read insane amounts of money) the research to create a flexible metal for ships which would recoil from torpedo blast then return to hull shape undamaged. Eventually they learned when the hull came in the bombs, fuel, men, etc. all got crushed so the research was eventually abandoned. Many decades later our tax dollars were once again used to pay students to transcribe the lab notebooks into some on-line system so other researchers could make use of them. One student was shocked to learn a certain metal could be trained with electric current. Took a copy of the lab notes (the on-line system was going to be public or at least researcher public domain) and went off experimenting. The metal was NITAL NIckel Titanium ALloy. Today it is used in countless things from eye glasses which can be twisted out of shape to artificial limbs to muscles for robots. My point is we are all forced to pay for this and it is the duty of government, henceforth by extension Universities, to spend obscene amounts of money on research nobody cares about, speeches which offend and publications which will only be read by a handful of people because one day they will have use. Sadly, what we are witnessing at Berkly is the rise of the Fourth Reich. Oddly it is not the ALT-RIGHT, far right or whatever label is currently being used for those associated with Nazi like tendencies/beliefs, but the far left or whatever label they have today. When one studies history, another tax payer funded thing many don't believe should be taught, you learn the last Nazi party rose to prominence not by deeds of significance, but, at least initially, forcefully suppressing the speech and thoughts of others which were not in line with their party core beliefs. It is extremely sad that Berkly would allow itself to be the epicenter which gave birth to the Fourth Reich. |

I'm here for the science. I deal with politics on sites devoted to that. I urge everyone to do the same. |

I've read all 5 pages of this thread and I still don't get what this is all about. Ok, there's something political going on at Berkeley. From reading this thread it's not clear for me if it's about Trump or racism overall or white supremacy or black supremacy or just the good old right vs left. Not that I really care because I just can't see what this has to do with SETI? There are so many interesting topics on this board nobody cares about and s**t like this gets 5 pages, LOL. BTW: What's the fuss about the riots? I'm sure LE is aware of what's going on there, don't you think? |

I would agree to your post if the powers that be at Seti would stop sending political notices out through BOINC. This is the second time it has happened in less than a year and that is 3 times too many. Personally, I don't come to this board and knew zip about all of this. My machines were just happily crunching. Their and my calm has been disturbed by political statements appearing in the official BOINC notices. This is a BOINC project. Machines come and they go. Given the number of times I've upgraded/re-installed machines over the years I think I have credit for something like 30 active machines when in truth there are never more than 3 at any time. Perhaps instead of getting all politically worked up and sending out official announcements of such, those energies could be directed to cleaning such things up? I can't be the only one with machines I haven't had in years still listed as "active" in the Universe of BOINC can I? ----- http://www.theminimumyouneedtoknow.com http://www.infiniteexposure.net http://www.johnsmith-book.com http://www.logikalblog.com http://www.interestingauthors.com/blog http://lesedi.us |

The free speech issue has spotlighted another is with the UC system: the national reporting on the recent audit report and the alleged $ 192 million slush fund at the UC president's office. It is a shame that Eric reports that SETI isn't really on the UCB radar. Think what just a tiny slice of that money could do for SETI..... |

That's amazing indeed, but in quite bad color. We have Breakthrough listen reported few candidates recently. How many comments that aquired? Exactly one. But this noncence going on and on and on... Bad, really bad move to push it through BOINC notices system... SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

If now, or at any time in the future, if the number of participants/completed tasks goes down drastically, for any reason, could you send out a notice so that the rest of us could attempt to make up the difference? |

Agreed. Politics and trolling should not be appearing in a SETI News thread. This is the kind of information we ought to be focussing on in SETI News: http://breakthroughinitiatives.org/News/10 http://www.sci-news.com/astronomy/breakthrough-listen-results-04799.html https://seti.berkeley.edu/lband2017/index.html |

This is the kind of information we ought to be focussing on in SETI News:Also agreed. Unfortunately, my first trawl through found The software used for the analysis in these papers has been made available in a github repository1, along with associated documentation2. 1) is https://github.com/UCBerkeleySETI/turbo_seti, which leads to a 404 'page not found' error. https://github.com/UCBerkeleySETI/ exists, but doesn't appear to contain the analysis software cited.
