The group mentioned by name, the Proud Boys, was founded by Gavin McInnes.

Here is an article on him: Gavin McInnes Wants You to Know He’s Totally Not a White Supremacist (NSFW language)

Briefly: he has said some rather offensive stuff about a few non-white people (and other groups) but the Proud Boys is otherwise not formally classed as a hate/white supremacist group. There are plenty of other alt-right groups planned to turn up which may include WS ones... I give Dr. K. the benefit of the doubt as he is the one who lives(?) and works in Berkeley so has first-hand info rather than that filtered through the internet; perhaps he confused this group with another?

Who are the "Oath Keepers"? The "Proud Boys"? As I said, if I am wrong then I sincerely apologize.

white supremacists

You F**KED UP saying the above.

How so? The right wing group making threats of violence is a known white supremacist group. The left wing group making threats of violence is a known anarchist group.

**EDIT**
The Oath Keepers are considered to be a hate group by the SPLC. The Proud Boys probably hasn't been in existence long enough to make their list, but the SPLC has noticed them. The left wing group, Antifa, is also on the SPLC's list of hate groups. They are all coming to Berkeley to commit violence for the purpose of committing violence. Protecting free speech is not on the agenda of any of these groups.
**EDIT**

If someone reads that to mean that I think everyone on one side of the issue is a right wing white supremacist and everyone on the other is a left wing anarchist they need to head back to middle school for some reading comprehension lessons.

Hasn't political correctness gone a little too far when you can't say that a group of self avowed white supremacists is a group of white supremacists?

Just love this about the proud boys enforcer arm
“I’m proud to announce that my newly created Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights will be partnering with Proud Boys,” Chapman said, with the “full-approval” of its founder, Gavin McInnes. “We don’t fear the fight. We are the fight,” Chapman said in a recent social media post announcing FOAK’s formation.

In any case how much taxpayer funds should be spent to allow you to speak?

Actually the SPLC has quite a bit of credibility and is a fairly centrist organization.

On another note, the SPLC lists the "New Black Panther Party" as an antisemitic hate group. The Black Panthers no longer exist, so they aren't listed.

What's going on? I can't understand from France.

. . Basically as I understand it, a couple of groups of extremists, some pro-Trump and some anti-Trump, have decided to use the Berkeley University campus as a battleground to "express" their points of view, in the most violent and destructive manner they can come up with. This in turn has aroused strong feelings/reactions in other people, many of whom are not in California, who are expressing their own brand of extremism by abusing Eric via the Seti forums and general social media, blaming him and the other staff of the Seti project for being part of the UC structure. Not that the UC heirarchy are in any way that I am aware of implicated in the activities apart from trying to maintain the security of the spaces they are responsible for. But it seems that extremism is currently "la mode a la jour" . :(

Nutters from the Left and nutters from the Right are using Berkeley for their protests/riots.
Apparently other nutters feel that the University should do something about it or they will stop crunching Seti work.
All too silly for words really.

The issue of free speech is an important one. Berkeley needs to deal with it in a proper manner, not try to sweep it under the rug. SETI should not be involved. The moderator's views about paying for free speech are out of line.

. . There is always a cost for free speech, as for freedom of any kind. Sadly while most of us have not had to pay that cost, and therefore take the privilege for granted, many have also forgotten that it was paid for dearly. And the least we owe to those who did pay for that is to have respect for others so it does not become necessary again. Sadly there are too many who are willing to precipitate violence, for all the wrong reasons. :(

@Eric, anyone who thinks the SPLC has no credibility is saying his mind is closed tighter than the DPRK is as a country.

Unfortunately all the people coming into Berkeley are simply trying to get their 15 micro-seconds of fame and they have chosen violence as their vehicle to get it. They deserve the inside of a court room where a jury stares at them and a judge sentences them to a long time period of self reflection.

you might want to keep in mind you live in one of the most protected environments on the planet..a uni campus and while many o the people there love the SPLC, the more general public, in examining some of the SPLC's calls, are deciding that they are a little less than objective.
Meanwhile, your reference to the 'new' black panther party..which I didn't reference and the old no longer existing in reply to an off hand, not all that relevant to the thoughts presented comparison reeks of foundering.

So sad that these idiot white supremacists, who aren't associated with Berkeley and the anarchists, who aren't associated with Berkeley, have picked the university grounds to incite their riot. Then all the others who are so far removed who think that both of these nutcase groups are somehow associated with Berkeley and all the damn fallout it forces upon the institution. I'd hate to see it, but the regents may have to close the UC system to outsiders because they refuse to respect common decency.

yeah...'fighting hate' is such a well defined aim....
when somebody says something like that and your first thought isn't ''they're up to no good'' you're being simple.
Do you think a research proposal with such a ... broadly defined aim would be worth the grant?

I don't believe I called anyone a white supremacist, apart from members of the "Proud Boys" who are in fact white supremacists who have indicated their intent to commit violence in Berkeley today.

Anyone who thinks I did call a larger group white supremacists should stop thinking that everyone divides the world into two categories, and that anyone on the opposite side of their own personal line is an enemy.

If you think being against violent white supremacists makes me a enemy of yours, you are free to leave. If you think being against violent left wing anarchists makes me a enemy of yours, you are free to leave. If you think my post took a position against rational conservatism or rational liberalism or against student groups being able to invite who they want, please read it again.

I think the whole bone of contention here is the fact that there are few or none actual ''white supremacists'' there..
At least not once you go to a dictionary definition of ''WS'' and not a newly formed emotional designation.
On a Science Forum I reserve the right to limit you to the dictionary.
You can CALL a person a supremacist but it doesn't make them one.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.
