@ PHIL: I agree with you in that Eric's use of the phrase, "White Supremacists", was a poor choice of words, obviously alienating and insulting every white person, whether or not they advocate white supremacy, and I certainly disagree with it. However, the numerous scientific research projects, not just S.E.T.I., which are being managed by B.O.I.N.C. are too important for us to abandon, merely because of our personal opinions and disagreements on political or social issues. I choose to continue my participation in S.E.T.I. research, and I hope you will, too. John Robert Mallernee Ashley Valley Shadows Vernal, Utah 84078 |

Berkeley wouldn't be Berkeley without conflicts over free speech. And a pioneering project like SETI probably wouldn't exist without their tolerance of off-beat messages. So you take the good with the bad, and define each however you wish. But that is the way it is in the U.S., with Berkeley just being an extreme case. |

FYI, local news is reporting that even though she canceled the speech yesterday, the idiots who want to riot have already showed up on the campus and the police are having to deal with them draining taxpayer resources. |

@ ERIC KORPELA, Et Alii: Due to the stigma attached to the University of California at Berkeley, would it be feasible for the creators and managers of S.E.T.I. and/or B.O.I.N.C. to look around for another university or similar research facility to host these various scientific projects? I don't believe I called anyone a white supremacist, apart from members of the "Proud Boys" who are in fact white supremacists who have indicated their intent to commit violence in Berkeley today. Anyone who thinks I did call a larger group white supremacists should stop thinking that everyone divides the world into two categories, and that anyone on the opposite side of their own personal line is an enemy. If you think being against violent white supremacists makes me a enemy of yours, you are free to leave. If you think being against violent left wing anarchists makes me a enemy of yours, you are free to leave. If you think my post took a position against rational conservatism or rational liberalism or against student groups being able to invite who they want, please read it again. @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

would it be feasible for the creators and managers of S.E.T.I. and/or B.O.I.N.C. to look around for another university or similar research facility to host these various scientific projects? Unfortunately that isn't really possible because of funding. For example, Breakthrough Listen is implemented as a contract between the Breakthrough Foundation and UC Berkeley. Our gift funds, once they have been received, are considered state property (so we can be subject to audits/spending rules) so we would be giving them up. Any grants we have are also grants to the University, rather than grants to us as people. While not theoretically impossible to move. A project like SETI@home would take significant time and resources to move. Should we be approached by a university that wants to provide a serious commitment to SETI@home, I'd certainly that such an offer seriously. @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

Eric, I suspect some people are far removed from knowing what is going on as it isn't being reported elsewhere. So for those who need some perspective, please read http://www.berkeleyside.com/2017/04/27/berkeley-braces-day-rallies-may-turn-violent/ Note that these people want to make their protest at a park directly across the street from a public high school endangering children and the Mayor of the city and the local school principal has had to become involved. |

Eric, Just who do you refer to specifically as White Supremacists ? Do you have any names? Or is it a group of people that begins with a (C)? Conservatives perhaps? Just curious. Now to the folks on both sides. This Project is a worthy project. I don't know Eric personally but I bet if he would allow my free speech along with a nice Frosty Mugged Heineken I would find no wrong in him. (hint ! hint !) I'm waiting Eric, I'll buy the 2nd, round. :) The hateful back and forth needs to Stop! I have no doubts that the Project Scientist's at SETI are just as nice as the Stardust at Home team. Let's continue to help them and instead of tearing each other down lets build each other up with the good things people need to hear. It took me a while to learn that lesson, I should have listened sooner to my Grandmother, born (1893) ,rest her soul, who repeated what was said in her day. " You win more people over with Honey than you do with Vinegar" So if we are going to paint people with a Broad Brush, let it be with the Broad Brush of Kindness, Respect, Common Courtesy. If we do we will walk away feeling better about ourselves. That's a good feeling, free of stress knowing I built my brother up instead of tearing him down. I have been an Astronomer all my life and I think the world of my Colleagues . I just turned 68 Sunday and I hope I can still help the SETI if I reach 98. Dr. Ronald C. I think he meant by "White Supremacists" is very simple. A group of RACIST people who are white. "SIMPLE" the fact that they are conservative is a sad after thought. |

Unfortunately, the 'this isn't our concern'' approach isn't a good one. You fail to push back and stay in your own little world...you must agree with them. Your use of the term 'white supremacists' is revealing...especially as they're not. They're the kind of patriotic nationalists that not only used to be the backbone of America but are largely the ones that preserved your right to bitch with their blood. Providing free resources to aid the budding careers of people who are in my opinion destructive to our country and way of life isn't what I want to be doing. If the troops on the ground at the uni start to suffer, it can only help to bring your administration back to reality. If all the STEM departments got together and petitioned the administration to stop hurting the university's core mission, it couldn't hurt. If you don't touch it, you can't break it. ; |
