Should you encounter black screen issues during the upgrade process, give your PC a few minutes. If nothing happens, perform a forced shutdown. This action should send your device straight to the “Installing apps/preparing your PC/We’ve got updates for you” screen.

Also, don’t forget to unplug any peripherals before your hit the upgrade button. Users report the screen will stay black (or in standby) after the update if you keep your peripherals connected.
-----
Users report that there is a compatibility issue between the Creators Update OS and Dolby Digital Live and DTS Interractive. Many users have rolled back to the Anniversary Update because the Realtek High Definition Audio driver doesn’t accept Dolby Digital Live and DTS Surround. For the time being, there is no fix available to solve this problem.
-----
It appears that the Creators Update drains computer memory. Users report that memory is full after the upgrade, causing their computers to freeze. Again, this issue forced many users to roll back.
-----
Despite having sufficient hard drive space, some users can’t upgrade to the Creators Update because the Update Assistant says there isn’t enough disk space available. The tools somehow fails to read the correct available space.
-----
Users report that the Edge Hub is unresponsive after installing the Creators Update. They can’t see or save their favorites and Edge freezes when they click on the Hub.
-----
Some users may also experience Internet connection issues after the upgrade. More specifically, users report that their modems can’t establish any Internet connection due to error 633. If you’ve encountered error 633, try uninstalling and reinstalling your modem drivers.
-----
Some of your Startup shortcuts may not properly run after installing the Creators Update. The startup apps affected by this issue are the ones that try to grab a port and are getting denied access.
-----
Many Creators Update users can’t launch any of the apps installed on their computers. The apps simply close unexpectedly.
-----
Interesting to see how much a Windows update actually breaks. But that last one is interesting, for the similarities displayed here.

Regarding the newest version of Win 10, release 1703 15063.13 is not engaging the BOIC screensaver.
link at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On three different PCs, after completing the hour+ long windows 10 update, BOINC does not start.
Can't get it to run even after reinstall of BOINC 7.6.33
Curious if others who have performed the same win upgrade have seen similar problems.

Hi,
Are we talking about the very brand new Win 10 OS I got today after an hour or two of downloading? It is the 'successor' to the Win 10 Anniversary Edition? Is it the 'Discovery Edition,' or similar?

If so, I have the same problem described below. My saver is set to 'pop on' after 5 minutes of keyboard inactivity. When the 5 minute point arrives, the monitor screen goes' blip' and I see maybe a 1 second black screen with a small white box in the lower left corner with the word 'BOINC' in it and then the main screen re-appears.

My other PC, running Win 7 has no problem as it wasn't 'improved' with the new Win 10 up-date.

What to do? Is this a fixable issue, or have we now lost a beautifil, and colorful, screen saver forever?

Oh,oh? I just tried switching to a regular Win 10 screen saver, and, on MY PC, NONE work as they did before! Even if some here do nOT use the BOINC saver, they like use a different one? And now, with the 'upgrade,' we have NO saver?

This is now a LOT more SERIOUS an issue, I think?

Oh my, guess what? When I did a 'preview' of the regulat Win 10 savers, none worked. BUT, when I hit 'Accept' to use the 'Mystify; one, it started working. Geez, a puzzle, huh?

Shall we pray to the diety of our choice?

River,

My Matrix screen saver is stil working without issue, as is Mystify and the others. Even in preview. I think your other screensavers not working is unrelated.

The problem has been cause by the Win 10 creators update.

If you look at earlier post here you will see the problem has been flagged up to the Boinc developers.

But to be fair it will need to be reported to Microsoft as they broke it.

Many here of course do not use the screensaver so will not notice.

Thank you for your kind reply and post! It was very thoughtful of you! I' GLAD to hear that others are working on it.

I use the BOINC colorful "noisy" screen saver as it is a thing of beauty and always brings questions and comments from visitors to my home in California. I wish more here would use it for the same reason as it would generate interest in what SETI is doing and help others meet good people, here in the groups, like you. :)

NEW PROBLEM WITH WIN 10 CREATORS UPDATE :( Darn !!!!

Oh gee, I just found that my 'new mail sound' is NOT working anymore! I use Mozilla Thunderbird.

Users of this e-mail app should try the following:

1. Open the app on-screen.
2. Click 'Tools' at the top.
3. Click 'Options.'
4. If you have 'Play a sound' checked, you are given TWO choices:
a) Default system sound for new mail.
b) Use the following sound file.
5. In my TB I have choice 'b' enabled and I chose a sound file i like, it is 'Mistress, you have new mail!' Haha

My sound does no longer PLAY when new mail arrives. If I click on 'Play' to test it, all is quiet.
However, if I choose choice 'b', (defined above), the system sound plays OK.

Somehow in their machinations to 'save the world,' not only has M$ destroyed our beautiful BOINC screen saver, they have NOW forced us all to use THEIR new mail sound !!

A person remarked in another post: 'M$ sure has a good complex !! I AGREE!

This is so sad. What to do?

A SECOND NEW PROBLEM WITH WIN 10 CREATORS UPDATE :( More Darn !!!!

Hi All,

The continuing saga continues !! I just had one 'new great feature in Win 10' ALMOST destroy an hours work !!

I have been working on a technical paper for nearly an hour and it was on my desktop. No big deal, right? Well, I stepped away to freshen my coffee cup. Guess what I saw pop up on my screen, out of the corner of my eye?

"Windows has discovered a problem and will restart in one minute. You should save your work."

YOIKS !! OMG !!

Luckily, I did save it before the unwanted re-boot started. What is I had been gone longer and didn't SEE the screen message ??

THIS IS AWFUL !!!

Many THOUSANDS of 'work in progress' around the world may be LOST by M$ having built in an UNWANTED FORCED REBOOT !!

What on earth is M$ THINKING to force this on us?

MORE HORROR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I got back to my PC within the 1 hour time period during which I can EDIT this posting!
Guess what happened during the time I was away?
I use a free html editor called "Kompozer." It is free, powerful, and been around for years. It was TOTALLY REMOVED from y Win 10 PC !!! Not a trace of it was left! It was even removed from my downloads folder AND taskbar. Nothing was left. Thanjfully, I was able to download it again, but it would not 'self install' by double clicking. I had to open the un-compressed folder I got and create a shortcut to it. I then got it back into the taskbar.

Question: WILL M$ detect it as "A PROBLEM" and remove it AGAIN?

Also, I found that the shortcut in my Win 7 PC to Kompozer was GONE !! However the program was still there and functional. I just had to make a new shortcut.

Will this MADNESS and TAMPERING by M$ never stop? OMG!

You are being a bit of a drama queen. By default BOINC saves a snap-shot of all running tasks every minute, so the work at risk is the (small) fraction of work done on tasks since the last snap-shot. On re-starting BOINC restarts from that snap-shot. Even in the worst case of loosing a task it is only a copy of a work unit, which is held safely on the servers, and when the task times-out another copy is sent out to another user.

Creators Edition does sound to me like the biggest step backwards M$ have undertaken in recent years - I saw one note that linked to the official M$ guidance on what to do if applications (not just BOINC/SETI) didn't run under Creators Edition, in short - revert to the previous version (now that's got to be as near an admission of a major flaw as I've ever seen from M$)

I was using notepad.txt. I was not referring to posting a note in a forum here. THAT note, on my screen, would have been LOST in a forced re-boot, I think? :)

Simple solution, use Notepad++
Not only has it lots more possibilities, but it also auto-saves the contents of every tab onto the disk. You can even close it and restart it without losing work.

You MISS my point.
I do NOT NOT want to be forced to use programs that auto save in case of a forced reboot. What M$ did was AWFUL. The only forced re-boot I will accept is by my anti-virus software after it runs at 3 AM, but does not during the working day.
Thank you.

Then do not use Windows or roll back to the previous version (read the answer by
Melowin Mar).

Then again you agreed to the terms of use in which Microsoft has said in so many words that you're just a bystander, that your computer is theirs, to do with what they find best.

UseTerms Retail Windows 10
Updates. The software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you. You may obtain updates only from Microsoft or authorized sources, and Microsoft may need to update your system to provide you with those updates. By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice.
But instead of yelling at me for pointing out a very simple solution, you could've posted a thank you and be on your way. You're posting all this anti-Windows 10 stuff in a thread where it is completely off-topic.

I'm just stating a FACT. No PC should re-boot itself on 1 minutes notice UNLESS you told it the hours during which it could do such a thing. Isn't that fair? I allow my anti-virus to do that, at 3 AM, if it needs to. I was able to schedule a scan time. M$ is NOT allowing me to do the same thing. It re-boots when it feels like it, in the middle of the day, if it wants, with only a 1 minute warning; it could care less if I've left open files at lunch time. This is just plain and simply WRONG.

In regard allowing M$ to do wat it wants, what are my options? My PC is 2 weeks old. It didn't do the re-boot then. It only started with this new so-called 'update.' I suspect you are a Mac or Linux User? That is fine, but many of us are stuck with Windows, unfortunately.

Gee, they are a nightmare, They even deleted my ring tone and replaced it with their own, AND removed 100% an html editor i use daily.

You said the message read:

"Windows has discovered a problem and will restart in one minute. You should save your work."

That means the system crashed and required a reboot. That message does not indicate that it was random, forced reboot all on a whim. It clearly states something went wrong and the system needed restarting.

It also sounds like you're heaping on every problem you're experiencing with your computer and blaming it on Microsoft. I have not been able to replicate many of your problems, such as programs "disappearing" from the system and even the downloads folder, nor the inability to have specific system sounds used or screen savers working/not working. I know people don't like to hear their problems minimized when they're bothered by them, but it is sounding like a lot of your problems are self-inflicted or are a lack of understanding the system itself.

And Jord is right, you've hijacked this thread about Windows 10 Creators Update and screen savers to be about any and every problem you've had with the Windows 10 Creators Update. The Q&A forum is supposed to be for SETI-related problems on Windows (or Linux, or Mac, etc). Not general computer problems.

To return to the issue at hand. :)

I have noticed the same issue with the screensaver. If I try to test it in screensaver settings it just blips and vanishes.
I installed the latest 1703 build yesterday and it hasn't worked since. My drivers have not been replaced by MS own.
I run boinc 7.6.33 in a 64 bit environment.

I did notice however if you start boincscr.exe manually it works. It just dosn´t look that neat in a windowed frame.

As people wrote before in this thread there is simply no point in trying to get MS to fix it as they simply wont. The change in 1703 build is probably part of some overhaul somewhere changing how things are supposed to work so its going to have to be the Boinc developers that has to fix it.

I´ll be waiting for next release and see if its resolved then.

I wouldn't expect it as no one has picked it up yet. Remember that the days of old of three dedicated BOINC developers are gone and that development is now done by the BOINC community. Unless a Windows code guru checks into what Microsoft changed and how that specifically affects the BOINC screen saver, it won't be fixed overnight.

OK, if I'm so wrong in my feelings about this new 'update' forced upon me, and many others, and it is so wonderful, then make my BOINC screen saver start working again?

It is a beautiful creation and attracts comments from visitors who see it. It no longer works in this last 'incarnation' of Win 10. If you make it work, THAT will be great. :)

So far, this new nightmare has been nothing but trouble.

Thank you,

I wouldn't expect it as no one has picked it up yet. Remember that the days of old of three dedicated BOINC developers are gone and that development is now done by the BOINC community. Unless a Windows code guru checks into what Microsoft changed and how that specifically affects the BOINC screen saver, it won't be fixed overnight.

I guess it will be a long wait then.
