I would give 430 a try, but...

Fwiw, I installed the AIO with 430 ...
Given I'm running 980s, I had to wonder if downgrading would improve anything, as has been discussed elsewhere, but I'm not inclined to mess with it as it's producing nicely.

. . No I didn't say it was 'necessary'! After I had installed the ppa it asked if I would participate and assist the developers by running some benchmarks before and after updating the video drivers, I did not anticipate something the size of the full Phoronix test suite :( {Silly me!} so I said yes and the rest is history.

I still don't know how you triggered that. Must be because of your version of the distro or something.

I've never had installing the repo trigger a question to install the phoronix suite. Neither have I ever heard of such from anyone else. And that counts dozens of people. You must be special Stephen :->)

Hey Stephen

Not as silly as me trying to do 2 up on the cuda special app on a gtx 780, I didnt read the manual to well that day - Yep long time ago now. Trust me it did not work lol.

When are going to switch the machine with 2 x GTX 1060's over to the Linux Special App, expected RAC would be around 77k - 80k, with cpu crunching as well.

You would still at least have one Windows machine left lol.

Anyways, happy crunching and we all need a laugh sometimes :-)

Regards
Mark

I don't have anymore comps apart from this one desktop, and Linux sounds to hard to set up going by the posts..

I still use Windows for my "daily driver" machines while they do crunch Boinc.

I like the screen saver. And I have had the browser come back and bite me once when I was trying to get at my online banking website. So I simply refuse to commit everything to Linux.

That said. I have found Linux 18.4 LTS from Lubuntu to be easy to install and have been able to easily install Tbar's All-in-One. And I usually use Linux to participate on the Seti forums.

I have installed Ubuntu 18.4 LTS and found the screen response to be slower than Lubuntu. The Gui is enough different from Lubuntu that I had trouble adjusting. Since it was "less friendly" than Lubuntu I went "back" to Lubuntu.

You could give into your addiction and build a 2nd Boinc/Seti cruncher to "experiment" with Linux/AIO.

. . Actually that machine was intended to be a Linux/Cuda90 rig from the start, it was built for that purpose. But for some reason it always fails. Even when I got Linux working with BOINC and Cuda 90 it stopped after a very short while and aborted because the ethernet port had 'disappeared'. Strangely it came back as soon as I booted into Windows ???

Anyways, happy crunching and we all need a laugh sometimes :-)

Just got my first NVIDIA card running on Linux. You weren't kidding - the performance upgrade from Windows generic to the special app is amazing (tasks taking ~8 minutes on the 970 now take between 2 and 3 minutes).

Since it's an older card, is what comes in the all-in-one and the 390 series driver good enough, or can it be enhanced by tweaking this and that?

Hats off to TBar, PETRI, and numerous others whose work, and earlier comments in the forum, got me this far. Still brand new novice to LINUX, but now have 2 boxes working it (one CPU only, but even that's about twice as fast as Win10).

Just switched to that seti special app. Performance boosts is incredible. Have only been running (the special app) for an hour on a new Linux box with four gtx1060 and a pair of 1070 all on x1 risers. I appreciate the work that was done to get this app working!

Some graphics of elapsed time:

Histogram shows gtx1070 left of gtx1060 Look like about a 45 second difference in completion (sorry for missing tics)

Graph shows differences between the 4 Linux versions that have been running on the same system.

I would be interested in results of this special app on a full x16 slots.

. . That is probably because you were running stock under Windows. The AIO offers SSE4.1 I believe (or is it SSSE3.0) which is/are much faster than the stock app. If you had run Lunatics under Windows the CPU times would have been similar. But while SoG is a great piece of work Petri found the magic formula with using Cuda 9.0. And thanks to TBar's efforts it is there for all of us to use :).

No difference, or so little as to be insignificant.
Bandwidth between the CPU & GPU, even for high end video cards, isn't a factor for Seti work.
A low clock speed CPU may limit GPU production by not being able to keep up with the GPUs needs.

I quickly found that the "two thread" Celeron (G1840) that came with the used TB85 mining motherboard was unable to keep up and I replaced it with an E3-1230 Xeon supporting 8 threads.

I did run some tests using that stock Celeron and it worked OK on Milkyway with several AMD RX560 boards but any other project or using NVidia boards there was not enough CPU to go around to feed anything and run 18.04 desktop.

I tested a 4-in-1 riser under windows on a socket 1366 dual Xeon (slots: x8,x4,x8,x4) and as there was a performance hit for GPUGrid when going from the x8 slot to riser, When I added additional gtx1060s to fill the 2,3,4 slots in the 4-in-1 riser the degradation increased but it was not divided by 2, 3 or 4. It went from about %75 utilization for a single board to %45 for each of 3 boards. Windows choked on a 4th board in that 4-in-1 riser and I moved all the boards to the TB85 where they will stay. When GPUGrid releases their Linux app (old one was withdrawn: serious bug) I will try running it on my rig.

I have been finding the same as well, definitely hats off and thanks to everyone in regards with the linux app! My recent cheap AMD cpu, and 1030 gpu is killing it right now. Whenever I get more money, I might build another one....haha. Was only like $275 total. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8756281

I am curious what I need to do to help improve my windows machine and how one runs lunatics under windows. My main PC is windows, because of all the photo editing software. But, I guess I could always dual boot linux?

. . Unlike Linux the Lunatics installer is an actual installer, so if you want to get the best out of a Windows cruncher all you need to do is download the latest Lunatics package (the version escapes me at the moment, getting old) and run it. It will give you a very large app_info.xml file because Richard went to a lot of trouble to make sure it would not trash any work in progress. But You do need to stop BOINC while you install it.

. . S O S

. . OK I must have missed something (as usual)

. . In preparation for updating the i5 rig with the GTX970s to 0.98b 101 I upgraded the video drivers first. I am guessing I missed a caveat about it not working with 970s because while the system fired up, when I started BOINC it dumped my entire cache. Looking at the event log it did not see the GPU at all :( This is strange because the system itself did, I could run nvidia-smi with the normal results.

. . The real drama is that when I tried to take it back from driver 430 to driver 410 it failed. I even tried taking it back to driver 390 but that also failed. When I reboot I am now at the 'bouncing log in screen. Going back to a previous version also doesn't work. The last I remember the old system of changing the video drivers in this situation from the terminal screen no longer works either ...

HELP!

Stephen

in what way did you "go back"? did you just install the old drivers over the new?

in my experience it's best to purge the previous drivers first

sudo apt purge *nvidia*
(keep the asterisks)

then reinstall the new version you want

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-410

then reboot
