Gotta love how this always happens on a Friday, eh? Just like kids, always crashing at the worst time ...

Status update:

The checks are still running but should be finished within a few more hours.

The worst case scenario is probably restoring from a backup either one or two weeks old, so we lose two weeks of processing. I'm still hopeful that we can avoid that. Best case scenario is that we can snip out the problem areas and only lose a few pulses.

The result will probably be somewhere in the middle. For myself, I have no problem waiting for the fix, no matter what it will be. I've seen other glitches over the many years this project has been going on, and they all get resolved, eventually.

Might have taken thousands of years for a message to have reached us so a couple of weeks of lost data isn't much in the scheme of life :)

I just continued working units after a longer break, now using 2 mac computers. Surprisingly I worked a lot of units compared to earlier times, but I don't think that I created corrupted data. If this is the case, please let me know about the machine. Of course I would even run non- credited test units to check my systems if needed. I'm just running the last couple of stored units and wait for the go- ahead.

it was the structure of the science database itself that was corrupted, not the data in it, so nothing that we did.

I am suspecting that the "classic" SETI@Home project (not Green Bank/Breakthrough) reaching the practical limits of what an Informix database can handle is one of the factors motivating Dr. Anderson to initiate closure of it.

Mr. Kevvi,
thank you for your statement: it was the structure of the science database itself that was corrupted, not the data in it, so nothing that we did.

My opinion is to better stop a system that is not working as expected than to get it running worse. So the error needs to be found, also something regarding backup needs to be done as I can see from the other comments. I also understand that the technical possibilities are limited. Do whatever is needed to get the system running again, so it can also handle the higher amount of units worked on. Maybe a temporary throttling down of units provided might bridge some time needed... Just an idea..

This is the third outage in as many weeks. Get your act together !!!!!
Otherwise i won't bother supporting you again. Enough is enough !!!!!

It is all part and parcel of distributed computing if you decide to leave enjoy other projects that you contribute to

. . I am surprised that they are surprised. I thought everyone knew there was an outage every week ...

Stephen

?

Yes Stephen I was surprised with the comment hence the reason for my response.

Mr. Kewi,
... from Kanada :P
LMAO

Back on topic, I hope the problem only goes 2 weeks back, that is no big deal for us really, it's a LOT more of a pain for the SETI team to sort out what is/might be affected.

O projeto é suspenso devido a um problema de banco de dados. Ele deve estar disponível em breve.

There is nothing you can do except wait for SetiAtHome servers to rebuild.

No need to put the "science" part of SETI back online, as far as I'm concerned.
ET will not be found with this method anyhow, so just let it die....

. . QUE??

. . If that is what you believe then why are you even here? Some time people are hard to understand.

The ONLY frustrating part for me is seeing all you newbies, within the last 5 - 10 years, that have 3, 4, 5 TIMES as many work units done than I do :-(
My PC is on 24/7, unless it freezes or crashes during the night, and I have an 8 core AMD, 6 cores are dedicated to SETI, and I run Nvidia CUDDA. Just installed SETI on my 2 PC's at work too :-D

I work in Data Storage, keep trying to get my company to donate one of our smaller systems, but at 1.2 million each, they are a bit leery. I'll keep working on it, maybe one of these days.

. . I keep trying to get past the stigma of being a newbie :(

. . +1

. . It is easy for us to joke about it, but it is a real headache for them. Fixing it is important but ensuring it does not recurr must be a worry for them.
