I installed SoG version 3584 and have it running but the CPU utilisation seems really high with these tasks.
I'm currently running two at the same time on a GTX 770 and often they both chew up a CPU core each:


Is this normal?

Yes that is normal, a SoG tasks will use a full CPU core for the best performance. ;-)

You can use the -use_sleep option to reduce the CPU usage.
The readme does say that sleep can increase the run time for tasks, but I have not seen a great deal of change on my systems when using it.
Perhaps the effect is greater on much faster GPUs?

I'd say that's the case.
The faster the GPU crunches the work, the more support it needs from the CPU to keep it fed, and the greater the impact of any delays in the GPU sending & getting data.

That's a definite yes.

I saw time increase from 10 minutes to 1 hour, cpu use went from 97% down to 12 %.

Why I don't use it in my machines. But if someone wishes to use it, just be aware that it will impact the time to completion.

That makes sense. The CPU seems to have very little effect on the final run time of tasks for my 750 ti and 950m. On the notebook I had to drop below 1.8GHz before any real changes occurred in run time vs its normal 3.2GHz.

Sorry to highjack this thread again just one more question. For the SoG tasks should I be running 2 tasks for my GPU, or is 1 ok to keep it fully occupied? It seems to run very different to the "old" CUDA optimised binaries so I am wondering if the optimal settings are also different.

Running with the default settings, running 2 WU at a time will give more work done per hour in most cases.
I'm running with very aggressive settings and running 2 at a time doesn't really give much improvement in work done per hour, so I stick with 1 WU at a time.

Quick update. When I posted this my RAC was down around 6,000. It's now over 16,000 and still climbing. Thanks again guy.
No if only I had room for a third 750 that is sitting on my desk.

I just added a 3rd 750ti but Boinc is only using 2 cards. I recall seeing that you needed to put a load on the third card for it to run. and how to make an adapter with a resistor to supply that load. Is this making sense? How do I get the 3rd card to run short of buying another monitor?

How do you have the 3rd attached to your motherboard? Is it in a slot? Are you using a riser? Shouldn't need a monitor for it to be used.

When you start the BOINC Manager, does it show all 3 cards in the Event log?
If not, does it show in Windows Device Manager?

Don't need anything done to the card(s) to run these days - one of my machines has 3 GTX 980s and never had/has a problem seeing them despite only one having a monitor attached. (Win 7)

Is the card identical to the others? If not, maybe BOINC sees it but doesn't run it because it's not the same as the others? In which you may need the use_all_gpus parameter in (I think) cc_config.xml

I think that old monitor/dummy plug issue was a very old driver issue.
I have a couple of rigs running a 3rd GPU outside of the case with no monitor or dummy load attached with no issues.

I do also have one motherboard that just absolutely refuses to see a 3rd GPU on a riser. I finally gave up trying on that one.

When i've added a 3rd / 4th card to a computer i've had to reinstall the driver and after the restart BOINC " see's "the card and starts requesting a extra 100 tasks ,. I've added cards a few times and redo the driver ain't had any problems ( don't think it maters if you do a " clean" install if you use the same driver you're using already :-) )

Connecting a monitor / "dummy plug" makes no difference here ( i got 750 ti's and added extra cards )

Edit :

I use the PCI-E slots if there's room or a " extender cable just for " air flow" and on me quad xeon machine i'm using a x1 to x16 POWERD PCI-E adaptor , did the same thing adding a 3rd / 4th card to all my machines with no problems so far :-)

I had to re-install the driver when the new card was a different brand (even though it was the same type of GPU), but from memory installing the same brand and model of card didn't require me to re-install the driver- it just found the new hardware & then used the existing driver.

Worth giving the way i do it a try , only takes around 5 mins and could have the problem sorted without hair pulling , getting stessed and hammers coming into " play" ;-)

All my 750's are the same make , model etc but i had to do the reinstal driver thing to get it " seen " ( added extra cards as money ( read girlfriend hehe ) alowed ( ain't won the lotto YET :-) )

Edit :

Reinstall driver might be related to what make / model / bios the motherboard is , ive got Dell presisions ( diff models ) non runners off ebay so my experiance was the same for all 3 of em , spose it could be different for other M/B setups

Reinstalling drivers when adding another GPU of the same type appears to be a Windows thing. When I built my "new" cruncher, which only carried over the hard disk & GPUs from its predecessor, but did involve replacing the motherboard, the processor and the RAM Linux didn't bat an eyelid and just carried on using all the extra CPU cores it found (up from 6 "real" cores to a total of 16)

Thanks for all of the idea. It is a GX 750ti but it is a different brand. It is on a riser due to space issues. I will try the reinstalling drivers and see what happens.
