Message 1850724 - Posted: 23 Feb 2017, 6:27:37 UTC

I have an R7 250E which used to be used for computing until reboot one day. Now I have a lot of unfinished ATI GPU tasks and nothing I do will make boinc see the ATI GPU again. The Intel and both nVidia GPUs are seen and computing just fine. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both boinc (7.6.33 x64) and the AMD drivers (17.2.1) and still nothing. GPU-Z still shows both OpenCL and DirectCompute support. After searching and searching, I'm really stumped...

hi, openCL capability in techpowerup utility doen't mean you have the right OpenCL app installed , if u make a custom installation of this driver, u'll not see the OpenCL package inside ..

you have to try an older one http://support.amd.com/en-us/download like the 16.7.3

Message 1851454 - Posted: 25 Feb 2017, 23:10:02 UTC - in response to Message 1850750.

I didn't do any custom install. It was always the default install driver from AMD's website.

So I used the amdcleanuputility.exe to remove all the AMD drivers and rebooted, several times, to ensure all the drivers were removed. Then I installed the 16.7.3 drivers radeon-crimson-16.7.3-win10-64bit.exe and after reboot, boinc now shows this:

I think CAL is the older ATI compute method that is no longer supported, right? Though it seems that boinc still is not detecting the OpenCL ability of the AMD GPU. Any other ideas?

okay u'r using a https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2559/radeon-r7-250e and mine is a HD7750 , about the same gpu chip ;)
and looking Here, https://community.amd.com/thread/170187 theses cards doesn' t support OpenCL 2.0 because not GCN 1.1 !
sorry for the bad driver i tell you to install .. .

on my Win7_32 i'm using an old driver 12.4 but it must be a more recent driver to use with our graphics cards ;)

from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Radeon_Software_Crimson#OpenCL we can read :
With Catalyst 9.12 support of OpenCL 1.0 was available.[7] In Catalyst 10.10 OpenCL 1.1 was available.[8] Catalyst 12.4 Supports OpenCL 1.2.[9] OpenCL 2.0 (includes 1.0 to 1.2) Driver Works since 14.41 for GCN-based Models. Terascale 2 Chips can use Level 1.2. [10]

and then here http://www.hal6000.com/seti/boinc_ati_gpu_cheat_sheet.htm

a 13.12 catalyst driver will work with your graphic card and then detected with boinc as an Opencl capable one .

do you remember what was your last working driver with Boinc ?

Well, the original AMD driver was installed forever ago, before they went with Radeon Settings, and has just been auto-upgrading every time. Since it was working in January with at least the December driver, I am guess that's either 17.0 or 17.1. I'm not sure if it stopped working at 17.2 because I can't recall checking. I have always had the default auto-update box checked since it was switched to Radeon Settings. Their old app (I can't recall the name) kept popping up annoying notifications until it was updated. The new one just auto updated like Chrome, which is awesome until something breaks.

I thought this R7 250E supported OpenCL 2.0? At least according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Radeon_R5.2FR7.2FR9_200_Series it supports OpenCL 2.0 since it has a Cape Verde Pro, a GCN1 chip, which according to AMD should support OpenCL 2.0: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/OpenCL2-Driver.aspx

After seeing so many references to this 'clinfo.exe', I finally found it in the System32 folder and found a command to dump it to text: 'C:\Windows\System32\clinfo.exe > C:\iclinfo.txt', I just can't figure out how to attach it here... but the first lines seem to agree with wikipedia:

As a general rule, once one has found a stable, correctly functioning, driver turn auto-update, and offer-me-updates off for the drivers concerned. Hindsight is a great rear view mirror :-(

I'd prefer to have the latest version, but I wouldn't mind disabling auto-update if I could find a driver version that would work again. The problem is that I've been trying different driver versions and still haven't gotten OpenCL working again...

So, time to fully uninstall the AMD driver & driver manager and everything else AMD, then do the reboot, and reinstall the drivers and do another reboot. (the last reboot is usually not advertised, but can fix stray trouble like this)

Although, the absolute 'latest' at this moment, the 17.2.1 have some problems in games -> flickering textures. That may affect the OpenCL driver as well, as it runs on the same hardware. Perhaps best to go for the previous absolute latest, 17.1.2: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%2010%20-%2064&rev=17.1.2

A similar problem to what? Checking what an Asus T100 has, I see it uses Intel HD Graphics, which makes your post completely off topic in this thread.
So why not start your own thread and tell those trying to help what your problem is, and what you're trying to achieve?

for the OpenCL support ,

look here https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?391740-OpenCL-not-available-in-compute-devices-(Blender-2-76b)&s=5066d560783176f3a0bdc2110b2c721a

okay it's a linux version but with a " Platform Version: OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (1800.11)"

but in the CLinfo we found
Name: Capeverde
Vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Device OpenCL C version: OpenCL C 1.2
Driver version: 1800.11 (VM)
Profile: FULL_PROFILE
Version: OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1800.11)

wy only 1.2 support with a 2.0 app ?

in your CLinfo.txt, in the middle of the file, you'll have the GPU info like mine , i want to know if your CL version show a 2.0 support ..

mine,

The OpenCL version like DirectX and OpenGL is based on hardware, the only way to upgrade it is with newer hardware that has the newer OpenCL capability built-in. You can install OpenCL 2.0 compliant drivers, but they will only run in OpenCL 1.2 compatibility mode on OpenCL 1.2 hardware. Installing better OpenCL drivers will not change the hardware capability.

Just like installing DirectX 11 on Windows but running a DirectX 9.0c compliant videocard will not magically update this videocard to be DirectX 11 compliant. You need a DirectX 11 videocard for that.

So after trying and trying basically every driver that I've used before (starting as far back as 15.7) and all the reboots and all the frustration, I just gave up. I threw in the towel, resigned that I'd never get boinc computing on my AMD again, uninstall everything AMD with the cleaner and just went back to the latest (at the time) drivers 17.2.1 and left it at that.

Fast forward to today and I was looking at 'Your Computers' section and noticed it listed my Radeon again in my main computer. I was puzzled, so I opened up the boinc app and low and behold, my Radeon was computing! WTF? I can't recall all I've done to this computer, I checked Radeon Settings and it's still at 17.2.1, so it didn't update any of the drivers... I did manually update to the Win10 Creator Update, though I don't know if that would affect the OpenCL of the AMD drivers for boinc. I'm pretty puzzled, but very happy to have my main GPU computing again!
