Just finished Stanislaw Lem - The Cyberiad: Fables for the Cybernetic Age.

I’m just curious to know if this English translation of an 1960s Lem novel also contained an introductory contextualization of the plot within a communist worldview… just on the first couple of pages.

I know this, for example, from the East German translation of „Der Unbesiegbare" („The Invincible“). After that, the remaining pages contained a magnificent science fiction story without propaganda... as if the state censors in the (then) People's Republic of Poland had to be flattered so that the book could be published.

I actually read a Finnish translation of the book, it has been translated from the English version and published in 1986. The Finnish version didn't contain that kind of introductory.

I really don't like lining the pockets of billionaires, but young Jeffrey has got me so I've got ten books turning up and on the way now to fill holes in 2 series and to complete another.

I'll start with reading the holes of Katherine Kerr's "Deverry" series seeing as the 1st 2 of them turned up today with the 3rd due to arrive next week.

I was going back through this thread to see when it was that I was last reading Katharine Kerr's Deverry novels and I was very surprised to see that it just over 4yrs ago earlier this month (and how long a piece of paper had been in my wallet), but I may have to dig books 2 & 3 of Act 4 out of my library to get books 1 & 4 (that arrived today) into place before the final book (Act 5) turns up next week. I think that I've read the first 11 books enough times to remember them.

That's about 1 of things about 23yrs of not living in Sydney and working in the city itself anymore I miss as it was easy to grab a book anywhere, but here you travel for hours just to get to a few small book stores (that likely don't have much of what I want) and the what's left of our online book stores just don't handle general Sci-fi or Sci-fantasy anymore.

Another thing about new books is me having to fit them in my library and with another 10 to turn up yet that'll mean that I'll be doing a lot of shuffling books along shelves to make way for them and even maybe boxing up the little kiddie books in the end to give me some more room. I can lumber the kiddies books onto my youngest daughter for my latest grandchild (and future 1's).

Also while I was going back through this thread I came across a post by the Admiral reminding me about the last 2 books of Alan Dean Foster's "Spellsinger" series that I don't have so they're on the "to get" list now for next time. I also didn't realise just how many books that I've read in that time.

Anyhow it's almost about time to find another bookmark, shelve book 1 of the "Sword of Truth" where it is for a while and make a start on Katharine Kerr's book 1 of Act 4. A bit of new content before sleep should be quite refreshing for a change.

I finally finished the last 3 holes in Hugh Cook's "Chronicles of an Age of Darkness" series off (which I'll have to make room for in my library) and now I've started on the last 4 of 5 books books to Janny Wurts continuing saga of "The Wars of Light and Shadow", but I'm still waiting on the last book that was suppose to turn up in this country almost 2 months ago (a query has been lodged).

The last books of Katherine Kerr's "Deverry" epic also arrived today so I'll have plenty of new content to read for quite a while.

Well Janny Wurts last book finally turned up here last week as I finished off book 7 and started book 8 with 3 to go, though at around 700 pages each they'll keep me going for a while yet before I get around to Katherine Kerr's last 3 books of her Deverry series.

I'm now up to book 9 of Janny Wurts "The Wars of Light and Shadow" series, but they threw me a curve ball with this 1 as even though it's about the same size as the other books (and around 600 pages) the type is much smaller and lighter than the other books making it a strain on the old eyes to read. I checked the last 2 books and thankfully they're back to normal type.
