"Shantaram", by Gregory David Roberts. A novel, based on the life of a former robber, counterfeiter, smuggler, gunrunner, and street soldier
for the Bombay mafia, makes good -- a writer, after capture and serving his time.
He lives in Bombay (book copyright, 2003).

An excellent, very detailed writer.

I remember now why it's been over 20yrs since I last read Heinlein and it'll be at least another 20 before I do so again.

Now onto Herbert.

Cheers.

Depends on what you read. Some of his stuff is windy Sunday preaching at times. Most of it is pretty good.

Revolution and Other Essays by Jack London

The red animal in the somnambulist will out.   He decries the carnal combat of the prize-ring, and compels the red animal to spiritual combat.   The poisoned lie, the nasty, gossiping tongue, the brutality of the unkind epigram, the business and social nastiness and treachery of to-day— these are the thrusts and scratches of the red animal when the somnambulist is in charge.   They are not the upper cuts and short arm jabs and jolts and slugging blows of the spirit.   They are the foul blows of the spirit that have never been disbarred, as the foul blows of the prize-ring have been disbarred.   (Would it not be preferable for a man to strike one full on the mouth with his fist than for him to tell a lie about one, or malign those that are nearest and dearest?) For these are the crimes of the spirit, and, alas! they are so much more frequent than blows on the mouth.   And whosoever exalts the spirit over the flesh, by his own creed avers that a crime of the spirit is vastly more terrible than a crime of the flesh.   Thus stand the somnambulists convicted by their own creed— only they are not real men, alive and awake, and they proceed to mutter magic phrases that dispel all doubt as to their undiminished and eternal gloriousness. It is well enough to let the ape and tiger die, but it is hardly fair to kill off the natural and courageous apes and tigers and allow the spawn of cowardly apes and tigers to live.   The prize-fighting apes and tigers will die all in good time in the course of natural evolution, but they will not die so long as the cowardly, somnambulistic apes and tigers club and scratch and slash.   This is not a brief for the prize-fighter.   It is a blow of the fist between the eyes of the somnambulists, teetering up and down, muttering magic phrases, and thanking God that they are not as other animals.

Must be either you've all stopped reading or you're reading so much that you don't have time to post.

I'm practicing the art of Tsundoku, and I have the unread books to prove it. LOL!!

I'll pick up another book, Suzie-Q, shortly. It's taken awhile to read, "Shantaram", by Gregory David Roberts.
933 pages. An excellent read, however.

I wasn't trying to shame anyone. I just want to keep the thread alive. I'm not reading anything myself and feel bad since I've purchased several books in recent months.

"La montagna dentro" by Hervé Barmasse, a guide from Valtournenche and a Cervino (Matterhorn) expert. He just came back from Pakistan and a winter attempt on Nanga Parbat, first climbed by Hermann Buhl and in winter by Simone Moro. The winds were too strong and a good alpinist knows that mountain is always stronger then men.

I forgot that audiobooks count as actual books, too. So I just finished Dead Zone by Stephen King. Much different than the movie.

Phule’s Company book 1 by Robert Asprin.

Edit: do podcasts count? I am in the middle somewhere on a Star Trek fan fiction podcast. So it’s in hour 40 something of the 80 odd hours uploaded so far. The battle of Wolf 359 has been fought.

Well I finished with the 4 books to Katherine Kerr's "Deverry" series and I'm now onto the 1st book of 4 in her "Westlands Cycle" series.

Cheers.

I'm 'trying' to re-read the first five books of Piers Anthony's "Incarnations of Immortality" series.
There are now a total of eight books in the series, and I've just picked up the last three, with the
eighth book in Hardcover.

1.) On a Pale Horse

2.) Bearing an Hourglass

3.) With a Tangled Skein

4.) Wielding a Red Sword

5.) Being a Green Mother

6.) For Love of Evil

7.) And Eternity

8.) Under a Velvet Cloak

I got hooked on the first four books in the 80's then book five came out. I then
ran out of money to spend, and lost track of the series. I didn't know about
books six and seven until I saw the previews of book eight.

The series is EXCELLENT!!! I HIGHLY recommend this series to EVERYONE! :-)
