We have threads for "listening to" and "watching." I thought
I might start a thread for reading.

So what are you reading?

I'd like to start by saying I'm reading something very adult and provocative,
but I can't. I'm about half way through You Can Date Boys When You're 40:
Dave Barry on Parenting and Other Topics He Knows Very Little About
.

I've also started reading Rescue Me: Dog Adoption Portraits and Stories from
New York City
.

For three years, fashion and portrait photographer Richard Phibbs has
donated his services to the Humane Society of New York, making portraits of
dogs up for adoption as part of the Manhattan shelter’s work to find them all
"forever homes." The best of his photographs are featured in this simple and
moving album, along with the story of each dog on its journey from often-shocking
circumstances of abandonment and rejection, through rescue and the joy
experienced in the new homes these pictures helped them find. This heartwarming
New York story will appeal to dog lovers all over the world. Phibbs’s introduction
is a passionate appeal for everyone to rescue a dog. The book is perfectly sized and
priced for an impulse buy. Royalties from its sale benefit the Humane Society of New York.

Oh, and I've also started reading the The Walking Dead graphic novels, which can be
purchased for the Kindle from Amazon.com.

As talk radio has become more and more frustrating and depressing, and classic rock has become boring, I've been listening to audiobooks again lately. After discovering Lawrence M. Blocks's Chip Harrison series, I'm revisiting Nero Wolfe. I may try Ed McBain next. He was mentioned in Block's newest Bernie Rhodenbarr book, and the Wolfe I just finished had a sample of a McBain at the end.

As for real printed material, I just renewed The Chocolate Cat Caper, having read only a few pages. I'm also way behind on my Trains magazines. I took Cat and my current Trains to Indy and never opened either one (but Wolfe on Overdrive on my phone is what kept me going for five hours in the station).

I always have at least one book going, and always printed material. I mostly read SF and Fantasy....nothing better to give the brain a break from the needs of work and the general ins and outs of daily living, imho.. (:

Just finished the last volume of Steven Erikson's The Malazan Book of the Dead, and started on Stephen Donaldson's Mordant's Need duology.

I have been listening to a audio fan fiction. Star Trek Outpost. Gone through the chapters twice now. Almost 80 hours of listening and growing with each new chapter.
As for paper. The Cat That Walks Through Walls by Robert Anson Heinlein.

Paper books - A few cheap "airport novels" on the go, I always stuff a couple into my carry-on bags as they are better than the in-flight advertising stuff. Then there's a few accident reports that I haven't finished reading yet - great for getting space in crowded airport lounges and on trains (careful choice of subject assists).
On my e-reader I've got a load of Arthur Rankin books I'm slowly working through, travel guides, plus a few of the "classics" (both old & new).

Just finished issue 3 of The Walking Dead. The comic/graphic novel moves much faster than
the TV show.

These days I never read whole books or tracts but the things I am reading and looking to gain insight in to are:

Candace Pert - Stuff including: 'Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind .' (I like her assertions about the reciprocal nature of brain, body, cell.)

Python (Programming Lang): Stuff about simple data constructs and fuzzy connections.

Setting up a free (no advert) blog.: Research for a friend who is developing a local community project.

Can't always name a book or source. For me reading now is more an open path.

The rest of my reading is just as messy :)

To be able to read is an amazing gift.

Oh Admiral.

You spoilt my image of you now.

I always imagined your evenings bent over an ol' sailor's almanac with a tot of warm rum in hand ploting your next voyage!

Hunting Hitler's Nukes Damien Lewis

Seems quite interesting ! Now on my TRP.

I'm presently into Captured by Aliens: The Search for Life and Truth in a Very Large Universe by Joel Achenbach, quite enjoyable and relevant even if written in 1999 (back when S@h began havin traction). Next, in a less journalistic style, I'll most probably tackle Life Everywhere: The New Science Of Astrobiology by David Darling.

Btw, if anyone here is using Goodreads, feel free to beam a signal in my general direction.

I haven't read it myself and don't plan to, but The Toaster Project is highly recommended by my coworker.

The author decides to build a toaster from scratch. Not just go to the hardware store and buy components. He goes to an iron mine for ore. He goes to a coal mine for coal, makes it into coke, uses it to make his iron ore into steel. He goes to an oil well to get crude to refine and process until he ends up with the plastic parts. Etcetera... The whole thing quickly becomes a farce, but he carries it through anyway.
