Since the TV series "Chernobyl" premiered last spring, interest in the accident has exploded. A whole new generation has caught the eye of Chernobyl and so-called disaster tourism has increased significantly. In August this year, almost 15,000 tourists visited the exclusion zone (the 30-kilometer zone around the nuclear power plant), before the TV series there were about 1,000 tourists a month. Outside the barriers, you can buy souvenirs and take selfies on a tank. "It hurts that Ukraine has chosen to make a tourist attraction of our suffering, that they are trying to make money on their own failure," says Vladimir Bogdantsev and sighs heavily. Vladimir Bogdantsev worked as an engineer at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant at the accident in 1986. He is seriously ill and and critical of the authorities having made a tourist attraction of the accident site. https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/vasternorrland/vladimir Oleksandr Orlenko was in the control room when the Chernobyl nuclear power plant failed. https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/vasternorrland/oleksandr |

The Diplomat: Why China is Setting its Sights on Ukraine. Beijing’s bid for geopolitical influence in Kyiv is increasing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ... Recently, Beijing has seriously set its eyes on the defense industry of Ukraine. Since 2017, Ukraine is the second biggest supplier of weapons to China, after Russia. The attempt to acquire the Ukrainian giant Motor Sich, a leading helicopter and airplane engine maker, has raised eyebrows among Kyiv’s Western partners, and is being pursued despite an ongoing investigation since 2015. Using the practice of mergers and acquisitions to secure access to R&D is a repeat story of what happened back in 1998 when China acquired the Ukrainian aircraft carrier, formerly known as Varyag. The acquisition of the Ukrainian well-developed aircraft company, which has built engines for the world’s largest transport aircraft the An-225 Mriya, would give Beijing vital defense technology and boost Chinese military buildup and civil aviation capacity, at a time when in the United States and in Western Europe the regulatory backlash against Chinese investment in strategic R&D companies is increasing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://thediplomat.com/2019/10/why-china-is-setting-its-sights-on-ukraine/ |

There is a lot more to that story. Chinese investments or expansion – all the facts behind sale of top Ukrainian aircraft company Motor Sich http://euromaidanpress.com/2019/09/07/chinese-investments-or-expansion-all-facts-behind-the-sale-of-leading-aircraft-company-motor-sich/ The price China offers is indeed enough to renovate Ukrainian aircraft engineering and several important factories, not only Motor Sich. The Skyrizon company and the Xinwei Group assumed several social and manufacturing obligations to approve the deal to acquire more than 50% of Motor Sich, according to the Center for Transport Strategies. This includes preserving jobs in Ukraine, investing in the development of new engines, modernizing engines, and indexing wages to safeguard against inflation. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) is investigating defense firm Motor Sich for allegedly preparing a “subversive act†by supplying military hardware to Russia. https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-motor-sich-military/30147732.html |

Hmm... China's State Grid said on Wednesday it bagged a contract from Norway-based renewable energy equipment maker NBT to build an onshore wind farm in Ukraine that would be Europe's largest. Read more on UNIAN: https://www.unian.info/economics/10728825-reuters-china-s-state-grid-bags-ukraine-wind-farm-contract-from-norway-s-nbt.html Guess that Norway didn't have the same aggressive negotiating methods like China... |

Russia’s ‘coal weapon’: Hampering Kazakhstani exports to Ukraine https://112.international/politics/russias-coal-weapon-hampering-kazakhstani-exports-to-ukraine-45352.html While Russia is artificially complicating regional coal exports to Ukraine, it is simultaneously increasing its own influence in the coal sector’s so-called “gray trade†that flourishes within the temporarily occupied and uncontrolled territories of Ukraine |

Do what? Perhaps stopping the importing of LNG and other energy from Russia would be a start.Oh dear:) That wont happen. Central Europe and also south Europe is very much dependent on energy from other countries. Especially "cheap" energy from Russia. The New York Times: A Ukrainian Billionaire Fought Russia. Now He’s Ready to Embrace It. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ...Mr. Kolomoisky, widely seen as Ukraine’s most powerful figure outside government, given his role as the patron of the recently elected President Volodymyr Zelensky, has experienced a remarkable change of heart: It is time, he said, for Ukraine to give up on the West and turn back toward Russia. “They’re stronger anyway. We have to improve our relations,†he said, comparing Russia’s power to that of Ukraine. “People want peace, a good life, they don’t want to be at war. And you†— America — “are forcing us to be at war, and not even giving us the money for it. [...] he told The Times in a profanity-laced discussion, the West has failed Ukraine, not providing enough money or sufficiently opening its markets. Instead, he said, the United States is simply using Ukraine to try to weaken its geopolitical rival. “War against Russia,†he said, “to the last Ukrainian.†Rebuilding ties with Russia has become necessary for Ukraine’s economic survival, Mr. Kolomoisky argued. He predicted that the trauma of war will pass. “Give it five, 10 years, and the blood will be forgotten,†Mr. Kolomoisky said. “I showed in 2014 that I don’t want to be with Russia,†he added. “I’m describing, objectively, what I’m seeing and where things are heading.†----------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/13/world/europe/ukraine-ihor-kolomoisky-russia.html?fbclid=IwAR0deK4pOVybyBx8ohwqTEduiTFPT_OatK4a44BFwEt-Fc_H7WDXcWIRgL4 |
