Barleycorn is also the measure used in UK shoe sizes. The most sensible shoe sizing system in the world.

Awfully big feet if you ask me.
Apparently British and Irish shoe sizes differ from one another by the distance of a barleycorn.
Not a language issue though:)

But English grammer can be an issue.
"John is taller than me" and "John is taller than I"
It's funny because in Swedish we have exactly the same grammatical "problem".
"John är längre än mig" and "John är längre än jag"

Oops. Grammar that is.
Social media has a tendancy to ignore spelling rules.

I believe the thread was about how the same words are pronounced differently by people & not their definitions :-)

Oh & the OP did say no grammar police :-)

It's a culture thing between countries. The Yanks think we are posh because we speak the Queen's English properly, we think they are scruffs because they can't be bothered to.

Country thing

It's like how one pronounces: Tomato

Is there a difference between American Football and Football in the rest of the world?
Well. A British football looks very different to an American football.

Not all the time, but of course there are kickoffs and punts to put the ball into play.
Kinda the opposite of soccer.........

You are being serious???
English football is Soccer, American football is a form of Rugby with padding. The UK has Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Soccer? Is that pronounced "Sucker" in the US?

English football is Soccer

If that's the case please tell me why the "local" team is called Ipswich Town FOOTBALL Club not Soccer club ??
I absolutly hate the game ( Rugby ain't that much better either ) but honestly can't think of a team that call themselfs a "soccer club" .

"Soccer" was a term used by the upper class whereas the working and middle class preferred the word "football"; as the upper class lost influence in British society from the late 1970s on, "football" supplanted "soccer" as the accepted word, possibly as a byproduct of class warfare :)
