My wife's nephew brought me a newer machine.
this uses about 300 watts and I don't want to use it.
It has about 200 work units that I wish to let go.
Is it better to just wait or to delete them?
I've seen this discussed before but can't seem to find it.

OK, so you don't want your "nice shiny new" computer to crunch for SETI@Home - no problem, it is your call.
As you suggest there are two possible solutions, let them time out, or abandon them.

The first is certainly the simpler to do, just turn the computer off, and never turn it on again and they will time out. If you want to use the computer you might want to consider setting "no new tasks" until they all time out, then detach from the project.
Next comes the abandon the lot, again fairly simple, just "detach" the computer from SETI@Home, all the tasks will be aborted "instantly", and will be released to other users to be processed.

Another option is to allow the computer to process the tasks, but seriously restrict the amount of time it is allowed to process for - times can be set using the compute preferences in the "advanced" view of BOINC, you can set a processing schedule for say one or two hours a day, some of the tasks will time out, but some will be processed.

As I said, it really is your decision not mine, personally I would set "no new tasks" an let all the tasks you have in hand run to completion, then detach from the project.

That's called "Remove", no longer Detach.

Times can be set in the Simple view preferences as well, no need to point people to advanced view for this. Really, Simple view is more powerful than many people believe it to be.

I'm old and clumsy so I think I'll just let them time out.
I have tried "fixing" things on my computer and my oldest son has to undo the damage.
My main concern is the extra power usage.
