Message 1836471 - Posted: 17 Dec 2016, 10:59:35 UTC

Im running Windows 10 preview latest versions.

Since a couple weeks i noticed that the Seti screensaver wont turn on. It tries but flips back to my desktop.
I installed the latest BOINC version in the hopes the problem would be solved but it didnt.

I tried running the standard Windows screensavers, they start perfectly.

Also when i push the preview button in the Windows settings it wont show the preview.
Any boinc/seti logs that I could check?

The only computer in your account hasn't contacted SETI@Home since September 2015.

So you have no work to process so the screensaver will not run.

Restart Boinc and post the first 30 or so lines for the log here.

To find the log, go to Tools then Event Log and highlight the first 30 or so lines, click Copy Selected and post here.

If it was working up to two weeks ago then you have more than one account and this is not the one you crunch under.

You have two accounts. This 'peluso' account with computer iD 7739693 and account wpn with computer ID 7775739.

You're running a lot of work on the GPU. GPU tasks do not have a graphics application, only CPU tasks do. Hence why you don't (always) see the screen saver.

Dispite that being true, I have a GPU running a lot of tasks, i continuously have CPU tasks running too (4 at a time).... and I would expect the screensaver to behave correctly....
I also have my screensaver set so that when you activate the computer again it requires the password.
Now the screensaver attempts to start to run but it does not and returns to the desktop leaving the computer wide open... Even if the GPU tasks dont have a graphics application, the screensaver should activate even if it is just a blank screen....

ps: is it possible to merge two accounts (peluso with WPN to continue under WPN)?

I can't comment on your screen saver issues, but I can on your two accounts. For many reasons it is not possible to merge two accounts, so sadly you are stuck with having them both.

You also have set suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25% which the screen saver application can easily reach at start-up. Yes, the screen saver application (BOINC.scr) run from the Windows directory is seen as a non-BOINC application and is thus measured for this setting. Increase that value, or set it to zero (0) to disable.
Also, even though you may run CPU tasks, only selecting one of these tasks gives the option to show graphics. The GPU tasks just do not.

I also have my screensaver set so that when you activate the computer again it requires the password.
Now the screensaver attempts to start to run but it does not and returns to the desktop leaving the computer wide open...
Sounds more like a Windows bug to me, as running the screen saver, turning the screen off and setting up the login screen are Windows functions. BOINC doesn't have the permission to do any of that and it shouldn't have.

Even if the GPU tasks dont have a graphics application, the screensaver should activate even if it is just a blank screen....
BOINC has its own screen saver, but as I said, you're hampering things by setting suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25%. Work on that one first, and you'll see that many of the problems will go away.

It used to work without problems (with those settings) until the Windows update a couple weeks ago. So it is something in the Windows updates that changed it.
as said, im running preview version of Windows.

BUT the BOINC screensaver is the only screensaver showing this behavior, the standard Windows screensavers behave correctly....
I see the screensaver starting, my screen goes black for a second as if the graphics will come and then jumps back to the desktop.....

Yes it may well be the Windows update that has changed something

So what is you idle CPU %, have you checked?

If it is anywhere near 25% as Jord said, as soon as the Boinc screensaver starts it may push the load above 25% and it will immediately stop again

Your other screensavers will not be affected as they have nothing to do with Boinc or CPU loads.
